Materials/Resources:
Harcourt Health and Fitness textbook, one per student.
Two apples, one has been repeatedly dropped/thrown.
One apple slicer
Ways to be respectful worksheet, 22 copies.
Heartprints by P.K. Hallinan
Plan for set-up/distribution/cleanup of materials:

The students will retrieve their text books from their desks when it is time to take it out. The
worksheets will be distributed by the paper passers.
Lesson Procedure:
1 Lesson beginning:
The lesson will begin with the students seated in a circle on the carpet. The teacher will bring out
the two apples. The teacher will hold up the bruised apple and begin to criticize it. The apple will
be passed around the circle and each child will be asked to say something unkind to the apple.
Some examples might include, You are ugly!, You probably have worms in you!, Youre
not my friend!, etc. The teacher will then cut open the apple with the apple slicer to show the
students how it is bruised and hurt on the inside.
The teacher will introduce the Golden Rule by asking the students how they would feel if they
were the first apple, and if they would want to be treated that way. The teacher will write, Treat
others the way you want to be treated on the white board and explain the meaning.
The teacher will show the class the other apple and then encourage students to think of what can
be said to make sure that the apple feels good inside. The teacher will start and then pass the
apple around the circle again. The students will now say things like, You are smart!, You are
my friend!, I like you!, etc. The teacher will then cut open the other apple and explain to the
students how the kind words helped the apple to feel good about himself. It will be explained that
this is part of the Golden Rule, and one way to be respectful.
2 The students will be asked to turn so that they can face the teachers chair. She will read
Heartprints by P.K. Hallinan. The students will be asked how this book relates to the Golden
Rule and respect. After the book is completed, the students will return to their desks.
3 The students will be asked to get out their Harcourt Health and Fitness textbooks, and to turn to
page 196. They will be asked to follow along as the teacher reads the chapter aloud. The teacher
will pause to ask students how the children in the pictures are showing respect to others.
4 The paper passers will distribute the Ways to be respectful worksheet. Before the students
begin writing, the teacher will ask some students to share some ways that a person can show
respect. The teacher will make a list on the board, which will remain up for the students to copy
if needed.

Lesson ending:
Long closure:
i
The students will be asked to share what they wrote on their paper with someone sitting near
them.
ii
The teacher will ask three students to share why it is important to respect others.
Short Closure:
i
The teacher will ask three students to share why it is important to respect others.
Key Questions:

What is respect?
How can we be respectful to my peers?
How can I be respectful to my environment?
What is the main idea of the Golden Rule?
What would result if we were not respectful to others?
Why is it better that we say kind words to others?
What can you do to make sure that everyone is respectful in our classroom?

Logistics:
Timing:
The lesson will last approximately forty-five minutes. Ten minutes will be allowed for the
apple activity. Ten minutes will be allowed for the reading of the text book. Ten minutes will be
given for the students to write, and five will be left for the closure.
Transitions:
To transition from the carpet to the desks, students will be called as the teacher names a
color they are wearing. To transition from the textbook reading to the worksheet, the paper
passers will be asked to distribute the materials.
Classroom Management:
When completing the apple activity, students will be reminded that this is just a game and
not to repeat the unpleasant words to others. As well, they will be told to sit at their desk if they
cannot handle the activity seriously. The teacher will be sure to make expectations explicit and
clear from the beginning of the lesson. The teacher will remind students to continue showing
respect to their peers, to the materials, and to me for the entirety of the lesson. To call the
students attention, the teacher will yell, Barclay Brook, and the students will respond by
saying, stop and look. If a student misbehaves, they will be asked to clip down on the
behavior chart. As well, positive behavior will be rewarded by having students clip up or by
offering a point to a whole table.

Differentiation
Students who are in need of extra assistance, such as G, AW, M, S, and V will be given
additional assistance during the writing part of the lesson. High-level students such as AL will be
seated by these lower-level students and be asked to help them is needed. The teacher will write
possible responses to the worksheet on the white board to assist the children with spelling
complex words. Students who finish early will be allowed to read a book from the selection at
their table. Students who are shyer than others, such as M and A, will be prompted with ideas of
what to say during the apple activity. More active children, such as A and G, will be seated near a
teacher during the apple activity as to keep them calm.
