AS91156- Demonstrate understanding of life processes at the cellular
level In order to achieve Excellence in this standard you are required to: Demonstrate comprehensive understanding which involves linking biological ideas about life processes at the cellular level. The discussion of ideas may involve justifying, relating, evaluating, comparing and contrasting, analysing. This checklist is designed for you to use when you are studying this standard. Tick the boxes as you go to establish which concepts you know and which you may need to revise.
Unit 1: Cell Structure and Function
By the end of this unit you should be able to: Differentiate between prokaryotes and eukaryotes Identify the organelles which are similar between plant and animal cells (can include: plasma/ cell membrane, nucleus, chromosomes, cytoplasm, endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes, Golgi body, vacuoles, lysosomes, mitochondria) Explain the role and purpose of organelles within a plant cell AND animal cell Discuss the reasons for similarities and differences between a plant and animal cell with respect to structure and function. Discuss factors that affect cell structure and function.
Unit 2: Movement of Materials
By the end of this unit you should be able to:
Differentiate between passive and active transport Identify whether movement is active or passive. Differentiate between diffusion and facilitated diffusion Identify and explain factors that affect diffusion Define osmosis in terms of water potential and use a diagram to support your definition. Define osmoregulation and describe the consequences for animal and plant cells that do not have osmoregulation and the benefits for plant and animal cells that undergo osmoregulation. Describe the different types of active transport and give examples of when these types are needed. Differentiate between the terms endocytosis and exocytosis AND pinocytosis and phagocytosis Discuss the significance of surface area: volume ratios Discuss how cell shape and size has an effect on the transport of materials Calculate SA:V ratios when given SA and V
Unit 3: Photosynthesis and Respiration
By the end of this unit you should be able to: Draw and label a chloroplast organelle
Draw and label a mitochondria organelle
State the purpose of photosynthesis AND cellular respiration Write the word and chemical equation for photosynthesis Describe what occurs in the light-dependent and light-independent reactions in photosynthesis. Discuss the process of photosynthesis in relation to the overall functioning of the cell Discuss the factors affecting the rate of photosynthesis. Differentiate between aerobic and anaerobic cellular respiration. Identify the number of ATP produced by aerobic AND anaerobic cellular respiration. Describe what occurs in glycolysis, the Krebs cycle and the electron transport chain. Discuss the process of cellular respiration in relation to the overall functioning of the cell Discuss the factors affecting the rate of respiration Discuss the importance of BOTH photosynthesis and respiration
Unit 4: DNA Structure and Replication (Cell division)
By the end of this unit you should be able to: Describe the structure of DNA and support this with a labelled diagram Describe the process of DNA replication (enzyme names not required but useful)- must refer to the anti-parallel nature of DNA and use terms such as leading strand, lagging strand, Okazaki fragments. Describe the process of mitosis with respect to what is happening inside the cell. (It is not necessary to know the names of the phases in mitosis, however this is helpful!) Discuss the purpose of DNA replication hence mitosis with reference to specific cell examples.
Unit 5: Enzyme Activity
By the end of this unit you should be able to: Describe the structure and function of enzymes with examples Explain the difference between the lock and key and induced fit enzyme models. Discuss factors that affect enzyme activity
