The Changes
Desirees Baby(1893) was written by Kate Chopin who grew up with her family
that held slaves in the 1850s in St. Louis. Her perspective on slavery was expressed through
the writing. Flannery OConnor use her own religious belief as a major point to drives
conflicts in A Good Man is Hard to Find(1953). Roald Dahl, the author of Man From the
South(1948), joined the Royal Air Force as a pilot. His main character in the story was
inspired by that important event in his life. All three of them use their own life experience to
write stories. Kate Chopin, Flannery OConnor, and Roald Dahl discuss life decisions in their
story through the characters: Aubigny, The misfit, and Carloss wife.
In Desirees Baby, Kate Chopin uses Armand Aubigny to explain the way people
make life decisions. Armand is a plantation owner who is married to Desiree and never asked
where she came from. At the beginning of the story, the story shows how Armand falls in
love with Desiree. Desiree is his love at first sight: as the author says in the quote, . . . when
she stood one day against the stone pillar . . . Armand Aubigny riding by and seeing her there
had fallen in love with her (p.4). They start growing their relationship afterward. When he
was told by Madame Valmonde that Desiree is her adopted child and her origin is not clear,
the fact completely does not matter to him.The first life decision that he make is creating his
relationship with Desiree to be an unconditional love. Finally, they decide to get married and
having a baby. However, the newborn baby is a quadroon. In this situation, Armand cannot
accept the fact that his baby is quadroon, and he blames Desiree for bringing this quadroon
baby into this world, into his precious noble family. He treats Desiree differently in a bad
way. According to Chopins description, He coldly but gently loosened her fingers from
about his arm and thrust the hand away from him. Tell me what it means! she cried

despairingly, so that forces Desiree to leave the house with the baby (p.7). After all, he finds
the letters that reveal the truth about his child skin-color and his ancestor. Armand is used to
mention about life important decision.
Flannery OConnor uses the Misfit in A Good Man is Hard to Find to explain life
changing decisions. While grandmother is begging the Misfit for her life, the Misfit tells
grandmother his story. Before he was forced to go to penitentiary indicted for killing his
father, the misfit tried to plead his innocence assuring that his father died of the . . Epidemic
flu . . (p.16). However, he is locked up in the penitentiary where the Misfit defines as a
place that full with suffers. Later on, he escapes from the penitentiary with two other men.
The Misfit says Jesus shown everything off balance . . . (p.17); he believes that Jesus is the
one who makes this difficult situation happens. The Misfit also concludes that he does not
deserve this punishment since he always behaves when he was a kid. As he says, I never
was a bad boy that I remember of, The Misfit said in an almost dreamy voice . . . . (p.10).
The Misfit who once be a Christian choir decides to turn himself to be a cruel criminal; as he
explains, I was a gospel singer for a while, The Misfit said.(p.16). He is not only losing
his faith in Jesus, but he also starts to behave himself oppose to gods idealized behavior or
go against the teachings Jesus. That is a reason of the Misfit makes a statement in his mind: If
god does not treat him fairly, so what is the point of conducting himself well towards the
others. Moreover, the way that grandmother who is extremely religious talks to the Misfit
remind him of the unfair punishment that god gives to him. As for the Misfit says, Does it
seem right to you, lady, that one is punished a heap and another ain't punished at all? (p.17).
The anger and disappointment that are buried down inside his mind all come out at the same
time and even give more motivation to the Misfit to kill the grandmother and her family in

the end. The Misfit is a major character in the story that shows powers of making the
decision.
The nameless character, Carloss wife, in Man From the South is the character that
author choose to play an important role in describing humans life decision. The gambling
between a south American man and a young soldier with a condition of winning the Cadillac
or losing a left hands finger is suddenly obstructed by the woman, Carloss wife. She reaches
the hotel room before the young soldier gets his finger cut by her husband and starts to yell at
Carlos. This is definitely not the first time that Carlos makes a bet with someone, and she tries
to stop him from getting it done. According to the saying, He is a menace, the woman said.
Down where we live at home he has taken altogether forty-seven fingers from different
people, and he has lost eleven cars.(p.26). Many pieces of evidence indicate that she has
done several way to help her husband get rid of the bizarre addiction including the biggest
sacrifice in women life, having her fingers cut. I can see it now, that hand of hers; it had
only one finger on it, and a thumb means that she has put herself in the game that Carlos has
been addicting to(p.26). The action that she has done go along with the decision that she has
made: choosing the one she loves over her self-preservation. She still continues helping him
with a hope that her husband would get better. Even though, there is no progress of him
getting better; he does not even accept the fact that his bets are wrong things to do, We were
only having a little bet, mumbled the little man(p.26). In addition, as much as she wants his
addiction to be cured, she wants to keep him by her side: In the end they threatened to have
him put away somewhere. That's why I brought him up here.(p.26). Love is her reason for
making this decision. As the evidence has been mentioned, Carloss wife is the character that
Dahl uses to display life decision of human-being.

In conclusion, the three characters in three stories which are Aubigny, the misfit, and
Carloss wife point out that all of the authors discuss humans life decision. Everyone must
have reasons to themselves for making any decision in their life. Humans have to make
decisions all the time. Some might be right while some might be wrong. But, people will
never realize whether their decisions are right or wrong until get to live with the consequence
of it. Unexpected, and bad situations can be one of the consequences; the death of a
marriage, the death of faith, and the physical death.
