Homework #3
I.
Prepare. For this assignment, you will need a pen or pencil, internet
access, printer access, and the vowel handouts from class. Note: you will
need to print note taking paper to complete section III, so do not plan to
print everything on the morning of class.
II.
Listening Review.
A. Listen again to the story UFO expert knew he was going to
die at http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-37684832. Check your
notes from class, look up any words you noted as unfamiliar,
and try to figure out anything else you did not understand.
B. If necessary, review the Cornell note taking system by
searching the internet for the myriad sites, documents, and
videos that explain it.
III.
Listening Practice.
A. Go to https://www.worksheetworks.com/miscellanea/cornellnote-taking-paper.html, design a note-taking sheet for
yourself, and print it.
B. Watch and listen to the file Exiled Tibetan refugee keeps
operatic culture alive in India from BBC News, and use your
Cornell notes paper to take notes. It might be an English
accent you have not heard much before, so dont worry if it
seems difficult at first. Be sure to complete all three sections
of the notes page you printed. Link:

IV.

consonant sounds and the four vowel sounds we covered in class: , , e,
i. Go to http://www.internationalphoneticalphabet.org to hear them again.
As you repeat the vowels several times, pay attention to how the shape of
your tongue and mouth changes a little bit for each vowel.

Finishing. Print this worksheet and turn it in at the beginning of
class with your completed Cornell notes worksheet. Printing two-sided is
best. Please remember to staple everything together before coming to
class!
VII. Reminder. Keep making efforts to find opportunities to practice
speaking. Research shows that students gain immensely from interacting
with and helping each other. Almost everyone on campus knows English,
so take advantage of all the potential conversation partners!
