HOME OF THE RED, WHITE & BLUE

Many summer-lovers profess Independence Day to be
their favorite holiday. Its a perfect opportunity to enjoy
some leisure time with friends and family. If the weather
cooperates many enjoy picnics, fireworks and finger
foods as part of the tradition. It has been reported that
Americans consume an estimated 155 million hot dogs
on the Fourth of July. Thats roughly one hot dog for
every two people in the USA. Popular sweet treats for
summer picnics like ice cream, popsicles and watermelon
are all delicious, yet terribly messy. Encourage your
customers to wash up with some patriotic bar soap that
was handmade in the USA.

INSPIRED BY RED, WHITE & BLUE

Consider some of these suggestions to add to your
product line:

Summer is the perfect time to market your soap as Made

in the USA. Look to the article titled, Manufacturing
Claims - Made in the USA on page 28 of this issue for
instruction on labeling your products. Amp up your
line with some special patriotic packaging. Use white
organza bags and white soap boxes with red and blue
ribbon to dress up your inventory.

dropper and fill the apple part of each mold cavity. Be
careful to fill in the leaves as well.
8. Place mold into freezer for about 5 minutes to let these
harden. Remove mold and set on counter.
9. Checking that the remaining wax temperature is
around 150F, fill mold cavities almost to the top. When
all cavities are filled, place mold in freezer until totally
hardened.
10. Remove wax tarts from mold and set aside.
11. Melt remaining red wax and pipe into 1-2 apples.
If the dropper has hardened, place in microwave under
a paper towel and heat in 3 second increments until the
dropper is clear of wax.
12. Once red wax has hardened, pour remaining white
wax over these. You may have 1-2 tarts remaining. Place
in freezer until set.
13. Repeat above steps to make next batch of 9 air
fresheners.
14. These directions are designed to make 3 batches
of tarts rather than 1 large batch because the wax will
need to be reheated too many times.
15. Our recipe yielded 27 air fresheners. We packaged
5 tarts in 5 bags and added 1 extra tart in two of the
bags.
16. Caution should be used to not leave in hot cars over
80F as these will soften and melt. Scents should last for
about 30 days.

5. Using a metal measuring spoon, take out 1 Tablespoon
of the melted wax and put into a very small metal cup or a

AMERICANA STARS SOAP POP

BUY RECIPE AS A KIT

Project Level: Intermediate

Estimated Time: Under 6 Hours
Yields: 20 Soap Pops

WHAT YOU NEED:

4 Pound(s) CC Signature Crystal Clear Soap Base

2 Pound(s) CC Premium Ultra White MP Soap Base
1 Piece(s) CC Matte Cobalt Blue Soap Color Bar
1 Piece(s) CC Matte Americana Red Soap Color Bar
2 Ounce(s) CC Fresh Picked Strawberry* FO 517
1 Piece(s) Star Shaped Cutters - Set of 3
1 Piece(s) Crafters Choice Soap Pop Silicone Mold 1611
1 Piece(s) Jelly Roll Pan
Cookie Sheet
Glass Measuring Cup
Measuring Spoons
Microwave
Mixing Spoon
Plastic Droppers
Soap Cutter
Spray Bottle with alcohol(for spritzing)
Wooden Skewer

DIRECTIONS:

1. NOTE: If you are making these products for sale, good

manufacturing practices recommend you wear a hairnet,
gloves and a mask. We also recommend a clean apron.
2. Weigh 16 oz. of Crystal Clear soap. Cut into small chunks
and place in a glass measuring cup.
3. Taking the blue color cube, cut into half and place one
half into the cup with the clear soap chunks.
4. Place in microwave and heat until soap and color bar
have both melted. Stir soap to incorporate color completely
into soap.
5. Add 1 Tablespoon of fragrance oil and blend into soap.
Pour soap into jelly roll pan and let soap set up.
6. Once soap has set up, about 20 minutes, take the middle
star in the soap cutter set and cut out 40 stars. Set aside
when finished. Remaining soap can be saved and remelted
for another project.
7. Repeat above steps 2-5 using the red soap color cube.
For this color, only use 1/4 of the cube to color this soap
since this is a darker, more concentrated color.
8. Once the red soap stars are cut out, repeat the above
steps, again, using the white soap base. The only thing
added to this soap will be the 1 Tablespoon of fragrance
oil.
9. Once all 120 red, white and blue stars have been cut out,
it is now time to make the soap pops.
10. Weigh 8 oz. of the crystal clear soap and place in
glass measuring cup. Heat in microwave until melted. This is
enough for 2 soap pops. You will need to cut and melt more
HANDMADE MAGAZINE JUNE 20 14

as you go along.
11. We found it best to do 2 cavities at a time. You can
certainly do more or all of them if you choose.
12. No fragrance will be added so that the soap will stay
nice and clear.
13. When placing stars into mold, we put 2 stars in, one
behind the other leaving space in between. When you
place the stick in the soap, it can go in between the two
stars so it wont interfere with seeing the stars in the soap.
14. Pour a small amount of clear soap into cavity. Take 1
or 2 stars, spritz both sides with alcohol and place down
into soap. Spritz alcohol down into cavity to release any
air bubbles.
15. HINT: A wooden skewer is helpful in positioning stars
in cavities.
16. Let soap set up for about 5 minutes. Spritz again
with alcohol and pour a little more clear soap into cavity.
Spritz 2 more stars and position into soap.
17. Continue until soap cavity is completely filled with
stars and clear soap. Be sure to spritz well between clear
soap pours so all layers stick together. We placed 6 stars
into each cavity - 2 of each color.
18. Position stick down into soap mold, leaving about 2
1/2 sticking out of the mold.
19. Continue until all soap pops have been made. Place
sticks into mold and place stick holder over top to hold
them in place.
20. Once soap has all set up, gently pull sides away
from soap. Push from bottom until silicone releases from
soap. Continue to push up until soap is far enough out
to grab and pull out of mold. DO NOT GRAB SOAP BY
THE STICK.
21. Repeat above steps to make second set of 10 soap
pops.
22. Wrap soap and label accordingly. Packaging
suggestion: Premium Crystal Cello Bag (3.5 x 2 x 7.5)
tied with colored ribbons.

SWEET SUMMER MELON

PRODUCT SUGGESTIONS
INSPIRED BY SUMMER MELONS
Consider some of these suggestions to add to your
product line:

In this issue we are getting wild for watermelon, crazy for

cantaloupe and hot for honeydew! The subtle scent of a
freshly picked, sun-ripened melon is the perfect inspiration
for a summer product line. Melon scents appeal to customer
bases of all ages. When added to certain products, melon
can be marketed all year-round.

Many major retailers carry melon-colored and fragranced

products in their standard line, and add more unique
melon scents during the summer season. A more subtle
perfumed canteloupe and honeydew works well in a
body lotion, mist, or kitchen hand soap. A more dominant
watermelon scent will work well in a brightly colored lip
balm or sugar scrub. Imitate a major retailer like Bath and
Body Works, that is famous for their line of Cucumber
Melon scented products. Make a unique blend of melon
that works well with your own unique product line.

WE SPOTTED THIS TREND

RETAIL INSPIRATION

Melon scents allow for a lot of diversity in your packaging.

Bright pink and coral lip balms with sweet, juicy melon
flavor oils are popular all year-round with a younger
customer base. Label these with brightly colored, eyecatching details. Bright pink bubble bath, body wash, and
liquid hand soaps will appeal to a younger market.
More subtle shades of pastel pinks, greens, and oranges
make a more elegant-looking product. Crisp white
packaging with lightly colored labels can appeal to a
more mature shopper.

19. Pour melted shea butter into the melted soap and stir.
20. Add the entire 1/2 lb. container of Foaming Bath
Whip. Gently stir, the consistency will soften up slightly.
21. If the shea butter begins to harden, simply place
back in the microwave and heat until it returns to liquid.
Frosting will not set up properly if the shea is not melted
completely.
22. Using a hand mixer combine all ingredients. Continue
until the mixture starts to thicken slightly.
23. Add 1ml of Forest Green Stained Glass Liquid Dye.
Add 2oz of Liquid Glycerin. Add 1 oz of Fragrance Oil.
24. Continue to mix until frosting thickens. Stop before it
becomes the consistency of melted marshmallow.
25. Immediately put frosting into a pastry bag with a
decorating tip. A Decorator Pro works well.
26. Pipe the frosting onto cupcakes. Top with a piece of
citrus soap. Continue until all cupcakes are frosted.
27. Frosting will take about 24 hours to harden up before
it is safe to package.
28. Package in cello bags and tie with ribbon. Label
accordingly.

BATH FIZZIE RECIPE:

MELON BALL BATH FIZZIE

BUY RECIPE AS A KIT

>>

Melons and fresh fruit are a sure sign of summer. These

look like a true melon ball. Just drop the entire ball in your
bath, or break it apart for multiple uses.
Project Level: Advanced
Estimated Time: 2 Hours
Yields: 14 Large Bath Fizzies

WHAT YOU NEED:

1 Pound(s) Crafters Choice Citric Acid Powder
2 Pound(s) CC Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate)
1.8 Ounce(s) Crafters Choice Apricot Kernel Oil
1.8 Ounce(s) Crafters Choice Shea Butter - Ultra Refined
1/4 Teaspoon(s) CC Bath Bomb Blue Powder Color
1/4 Teaspoon(s) CC Bath Bomb Orange Powder Color
1/4 Teaspoon(s) CC Bath Bomb Yellow Powder Color
1 Ounce(s) CC Melon Ball Fragrance Oil 467
6 Piece(s) Bath Bomb Ball Mold 2.75 diameter (2 pc set)
Digital Scale (to weigh ingredients)
Large Mixing Bowl - 2
Measuring Cups and Spoons
Medium Mixing Bowl - 1
Sifter (optional)
Spray Bottle with Rubbing Alcohol
Wire Whisk - 2

DIRECTIONS:
1. If you are making these products for sale, good manufacturing
practices recommend you wear a hairnet, gloves and a mask.
We also recommend a clean apron and covering work area
to help with clean up.
2. Separate the bath bomb molds in 6 sets so they are ready
to use. You will see how one side is slightly different.
3. Measure 2 cups baking soda and 1 cup citric acid. Add to
large mixing bowl and blend with a wire whisk. If there are
any clumps, a sifter can be used to break these up. If desired,
use gloved hands to mix ingredients.
4. On a scale, weigh .90 ounces of Shea Butter. Place in
microwave-safe bowl and heat on 50% power until melted.
5. Place a small glass bowl on scale and tare the scale to
zero. Pour Apricot Kernel Oil into bowl until scale reads .90
ounces.
6. To dry mixture, add melted shea butter and apricot kernel
oil. Blend well with wire whisk or mix with gloved hands until
well incorporated.
7. Add 1/4 tsp. of Bath Bomb Orange powder. Use whisk or
hands to blend into mixture. Be sure color is mixed in well so
there are no white spots or streaking in the bath fizzies. If a
darker color is desired, add a little more color.
8. Add .5 oz. (1 Tbsp.) of fragrance oil by drizzling into
different locations of the mixture. Do not pour all of fragrance

HANDMADE MAGAZINE JUNE 20 14

14

into one location of the bowl. Mix fragrance well into

mixture
9. Once mixture is mixed in, pack both sides of mold tightly
with product. Add enough so the tops are mounded over.
10. With one mold in each hand, quickly push them
together and twist back and forth a few times to remove
excess product from around the edges. At this point, you
can unmold the top side and brush away any remaining
mixture on the lip of the mold.
11. If mixture does not stick together, make sure mold edges
are free of product and then press together again so sides
will stick together. You may need to add more mixture to
the middle of the mold, then place together again.
12. These need to be pressed together very firmly. Add a
little more fizzy mixture to help them stick together or you
can also try spritzing the top of mixture with a little rubbing
alcohol and then try pressing molds together again.
13. Let bath fizzy sit in the mold for about 30 minutes, then
unmold and set on a cookie sheet to dry completely, which
may take over 24 hours.
14. Continue in this manner until all the mixture is used.
Each batch should make 3 bath fizzies. Repeat steps to
make second batch of bath fizzies.
15. For the green color, mix together 1/4 tsp. of yellow
bath bomb powder and 1 pinch of blue powder. Mix
together in small bowl. Add a small amount to bath fizzy
mixture and blend well. If too yellow, add a small pinch of
blue to the mixture and continue to blend until a nice green
color is achieved.
16. You can make bath fizzies all one color (green and
orange) or, if you choose, you can make both batches at
one time and make one half green and one half orange.
Use your creativity to come up with fun designs.
17. TO PACKAGE/SHIP: You can package these by keeping
them in the bath bomb mold. Or, shrink wrap them once
unmolded, if desired. If using the mold, we suggest using
the 135 x 55 shrink wrap bands. This is applied around
the top and bottom of the mold - not the middle/widest
part.

11. Repeat until all of the mixture has been used up.
12. If mixtures start to harden up, place in microwave for
15 seconds to soften.
13. Allow to air dry for 24-48 hours. Package as desired.
14. Variations: To make salt scrub cubes, pour green
layer into a 13 x 9 cookie sheet lined with waxed paper.
Let harden slightly then spread pink mixture over the
green. Cut into squares when completely set up.
15. Notes: If you want to make this recipe using plastic
soap molds, it will be almost impossible to remove this
product. It is very, very thick. We recommend silicone
molds if available.
16. Other alternatives would be a jelly roll pan, glass
baking dish or plastic food storage containers lined with
waxed paper. If you do this, we suggest not using these
containers for food at a later date.

9. Checking that temperature of soap is around 125 F,

carefully pour clear soap over top of oatmeal, leaving

DIRECTIONS:
Begin by making the stars. Weigh out 6 oz. of the Baby
Buttermilk MP soap, cut into chunks and melt. Add 2-3
drops of the Stained Glass Blue Liquid Soap Color to suit
then stir in 5 ml of the fragrance oil. Mix well, then pour
into four of the star cavities in the silicone star column mold.
Allow to harden completely, then set the bottom 3/4 of the
mold into a sink of hot water to aid in easy removal of the
stars from the mold. Gently ease out the stars. Repeat with
the remaining 6 oz. of MP base and 5 ml of fragrance
using the Stained Glass Santa Red Liquid Soap Color.
Now make your cold process soap that will surround the
stars. Weigh out the water and lye and pour the lye into
the water. Mix well, then set aside to cool.

ONE MAGIC WORD THAT CAN MAKE

SUMMER VACATION POSSIBLE
By Marla Tabaka
Summer festivals, apple picking, and the relaxing sounds of
summer are calling your name. Its time for a vacation, isnt
it? You work hard and you deserve time off, but sometimes
it feels like there are too many demands and too little time.
How can you manage a vacation on top of it all?
Could it be as simple as using the word no?
Thats no to yourself, no to employees, no to friends, and,
yes, even no (sometimes) to clients. Reflect upon the times
that you have regretted saying yes to something that took
you away from your primary focus. How much time and
stress would it have saved you if you had uttered one little
word?
Yes, it is as simple as introducing this powering little word
into your vocabulary. Youll be amazed at how much
time, and maybe even money, youll save when you get
comfortable with the word no.
But how do you say no to your own mother when she
calls to chat in the middle of the day? Or to the client who
expects you to go beyond the scope of a project without
paying for your added time? What about all of those cool
ideas that enter your mind; how do you say no to yourself
and remain focused on whats most important?
Here are three simple guidelines that might just make your
life easier.

1. DONT RESPOND IMMEDIATELY. When you are asked to

do something that isnt a part of your primary focus, simply

tell the person that you will get back to them. Take a little
time to assess the pros and cons of saying yes. Reflect upon
your goals and review how saying yes will affect them.
Even if its a simple request, it may put you behind schedule.
Is it worth it? You have a right to say no, and once you
begin to see the results, this little word will roll off your
tongue with greater ease.

2. CONSIDER CREATIVE SOLUTIONS. Sometimes we say yes

because we just want to be nice. Saying no does not mean
that you arent a nice person; it simply means that you
have priorities and boundaries. When someone asks you
to do something youd like to do, but would put a crimp
in your schedule, think about giving them a partial yes--or
offer another solution.

by the end of the day. I decided that I simply couldnt take

the time out of my schedule right now, so I called a peer
and asked her permission to pass her name along as a
potential speaker. Then I called the meeting planner with
this wonderful solution and a commitment to speak to her
group in the near future instead. No doesnt necessarily
mean never.

3. KEEP IT SIMPLE: NEVER OVER EXPLAIN OR APOLOGIZE

PROFUSELY. You do not have to apologize for doing

whats right for you and your business. If you are kind
in your response and offer a few very simple words of
explanation, most people will respect you for it. Take a
moment to put yourself in the other persons position and
choose the words that seem most appropriate for their
personality type. If they are direct, be brief and direct; if
they are emotional, use a more compassionate tone.
Remember that long explanations and apologies may
backfire, causing the other party to push harder and you
to question your decision. Dont complicate the situation;
just kindly say no with a brief explanation (one sentence)
or creative solution attached.
Just for fun, keep a list of your progress. If you say no
to picking up the phone when your friend (or even your
mother) calls during your workday, jot down how much
time you saved, and call them back during a time when
you can both enjoy the conversation. Resist the hasty yes,
and keep track of your time savings for a week or two.
Soon you will be delivering a powerful no with ease. Now,
go schedule that vacation!

A while back I was asked to speak to a group on very short

notice when their scheduled speaker fell ill. I really wanted
to do it to help them out, but I knew the cost. Following my
own advice, I offered to get back to the meeting planner

MANUFACTURING CLAIMS MADE IN THE USA

By Allison B. Kontur
With so much talk about reviving U.S. manufacturing and
creating new jobs, more companies are advertising their
products as Made in USA to draw in customers. Given a
choice between a product made in the U.S. and the same
product made overseas, 78% of Americans would rather
buy the American product, according to a new survey by
the Consumer Reports National Research Center. [1]
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is responsible for
preventing deception and unfairness in the marketplace.
The FTC Act gives the Commission the power to bring law
enforcement actions against false or misleading claims that
a product is of U.S. origin. Only cars, textiles, furs, and
woolens are required by law to reveal where they are
made. Manufacturers and marketers who choose to make
claims about the amount of U.S. content in other types of
products must comply with the FTCs Made in USA policy.
The agency doesnt spot-check items that claim to be made
in the United States, but it does investigate complaints. [2]

Inc. regarding claims on EKs website that it had been

producing accessories in Logan, Utah, for 28 years that
were a true Made in the USA product. EK, however,
had imported many of its products and components from
outside the US. The settlement requires that EK contact
all distributors that bought or received the products in
question between January 2010 and May 2013, notify
each of them of the FTC order, request that they cease
use of certain deceptive advertising materials, and for
certain products where deceptive claims are made on the
packaging, provide stickers to cover the deceptive claim.
The order will remain in effect for twenty years. [5]
To avoid a similar fate, manufacturers and marketers that
wish to make Made in USA claims should be sure that the
products described meet the all or virtually all standard
or that the claims have been appropriately qualified.

Made in USA claims can be unqualified or qualified.

Unqualified means that all or virtually all significant
parts and processing are of U.S. origin. The product may
contain a small amount of foreign ingredients if theyre
not significant--such as the zipper on a pair of slacks--and
companies must be able to document any claim.
Third party certification is available for companies who
would like to market products that are Certified Made in
USA. Like other certifications, such as Certified Organic
or Certified Vegan, there is a process to obtain permission
to use certified credentials. This process often includes
an application, fees and sometimes a materials audit and/
or facility inspection. The certification process may include
multiple certification levels based upon the percentage of
qualifying raw materials in the finished product.

MADE IN USA CERTIFIED performs audits of the full supply

chain of a product including verifying the country of origin
for each component and supplier. If the product is found to
be completely made in America, it is awarded the made
in USA certified seal for use on its products. [3]
MADE IN USA BRAND CERTIFICATION MARK accreditation

is available to businesses based in the United States that

complete the online application and self-certify they meet
the accreditation standards. [4]
The FTC has recently investigated several US origin claims.
A settlement agreement was reached with E.K. Ekcessories,

SUMMER & THE SMALL BUSINESS

OWNER - YOU CAN TAKE A VACATION
By Stephanie Taylor Christensen
Taking a vacation is one of the great conundrums of owning
your own business: Gone are the days that youre allotted
only a few select days of the year to take a trip, nor are you
required to clear them with a boss first. On the other hand,
you may not have the support of a large staff who can step
in to handle your work loadnot to mention, your vacation
days are no longer paid! Fear not. You CAN take a summer
vacation, without sacrificing your business. In fact, you may
just emerge a better, brighter, more energized leader!
Heres how to pull off a summer vacation, while keeping
your business running smoothly.

ESTABLISH VIRTUAL ACCESS. There are many inexpensive

tools (some of them are even free), that allow you to

tend to business from nearly anywhere. Google Voice,
for example, allows you to forward your calls to your cell
phone (the caller will never know), so you can see who is
calling, and determine if you want to take the call, or send
it to voicemailwhich is actually delivered to your email.
Cloud computing systems like Dropbox, Evernote, and even
Google Drive help to ensure that you can access the files
you need from the office, on your computerand ensure
your team also has access to the most current version of files
you may spend some time working on during your travels.
from the norm temporarily, so theyre able to give their
full focus to the pressing business matters that you typically
handle.

SET EXPECTATIONS IN ADVANCE. Youre probably already

in the habit of setting an out of office notification on your

email and voicemail when you travel, but adding detail
to your message can set expectations with customers and
vendors to ease the stress on your staff (and yourself, when
you return from your trip). If you intend to check emails
every morning on your vacation, for example, customize
your auto-responder to tell senders when they can expect a
response. Conversely, if you dont intend to think about any
business matters on your time off, assign a point person on
your team who will tend to the pressing matters. Schedule
times that youll call to check in with that person, to answer
to urgent needs. You might also add a widget like Calendly
to your website or email autoresponder so clients can selfbook appointments to meet with you when you return.

DEFINE WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE. Setting priorities for your

team at least three days before you depart for your trip is
the key to ensuring that necessary business functions dont
get neglected when youre traveling, and allows you to free
your mind of business worries. In tandem, be mindful of how
you want your staff to use their time in your absence. If there
are some routine tasks that can be postponed during your
absence, let your team know that youd rather them veer
HANDMADE MAGAZINE JUNE 20 14

SET UP AN ALTERNATIVE EMAIL FOR VIPS. The problem

with checking on work email while you travel? It instantly

transports you right out of your vacation mindset, and back
into work mode. Consider establishing a private email
account that youll give only to employees and key clients
to use in case of emergency. That way, you have the piece
of mind that youre always in touch with the urgent needs
without exposing yourself to the stress of seeing hundreds
of emails in your public email inbox while youre away.

is either your fragrance oil or a superfat. Unblended oils

often appear in finished soap as droplets or small pouches
of unsaponified oil. Given time the oil may be reabsorbed
but if not, it may be best to rebatch the loaf.

DOS. Dreaded Orange Spots, or DOS, are the nemesis of

nearly all soap makers at one time or another. Sometime
they show up right away while other times they take weeks
to appear. There are many factors that cause DOS but the
most probable cause is using oils that have passed their
expiration dates and have become rancid. Always store
your soap making oils according to the manufacturers
recommendations and be certain to double check the

WHEN GOOD SOAPS GO BAD

By Catherine McGinnis
It happens to beginners. It happens to seasoned
professionals. No cold process soap maker is immune
to mishaps. But knowing how to diagnose the problem
and how to overcome the situation is key in learning and
understanding. Consider the following pitfalls. Have they
happened to you? Take careful note and next time you will
have the troubleshooting upper hand.

DRY AND CRUMBLY. If your soap crumbles when cutting

or appears dry and powdery, it is likely that the soap is
lye heavy. An abundance of lye in your recipe will be
left without an oil to saponify with, thus showing up as
free radical particles. Chances are you miscalculated or
mismeasured; too much lye or too little oil.
SOFT AND SQUISHY. Just the opposite of lye heavy is
soft soap. Its characteristics are spongy, gelatinous and
malleable to the touch. If this occurs, double check your
calculations. Be sure you did not add too much oil or left
out a portion of the lye.
WONT SET UP. If after 24 hours your soap hasnt firmed

up your problem could be (1) improper measurements or

(2) inadequate mixing. Retrace your steps to be certain
that you correctly calculated your lye solution. If your
measurements were 100% correct, the diagnosis could be
that you did not bring your soap batter to a proper trace.
In order for saponification to occur the oils must be
completely combined with the lye. False trace is a
phenomenon that can occur when the reaction temperature
drops and the fats solidify before they are properly
incorporated. To avoid this, keep your oil and lye solution
temperatures consistent with each other

process your soap heats up and goes through a gel phase.
The gelling begins in the middle and works its way out
to the edges. As the soap completes the gel phase, the
process is reversed with the edges cooling and solidifying
first working back into the center. If at any time during this
process the temperature changes or the natural process is
halted, a gel ring can occur. The finished soap is absolutely
okay to use but aesthetically it can alter the design of your
soap.
To avoid a gel ring you can (1) bypass gel altogether by
placing your newly poured loaf into the refrigerator/freezer
or (2) create an environment where your saponifying soap
will remain at a constant warm temperature.

SPLIT TOPS. If your soap batch gets too hot while gelling,
it can begin to crack. Similar to bread baking in the oven,
an exit for the trapped heat forms. This often happens with
soaps that contain milk or sugar ingredients. Quite often
the crack will come back together as the soap cools and
be almost unnoticeable in the final design. If you find your
tops splitting more often than not, try elevating your loaf
to allow for airflow around the mold. Or switch to a mold
that is not quite so insulated. Cracked tops still produce
viable soaps but they can be aesthetically unpleasant.
The old adage of measure twice and cut once certainly
applies to soap making. Dont rush your process. Take the
proper time to accurately measure and remeasure your
ingredients. Keeping a record of your steps will not only
provide a history for re-creation. But it also offers a record
to scrutinize when things go wrong. Learn from reflecting
on the experience and trying again.

WSP Staff Answered:

While this product is not

aected by PH levels I would not
recommend using it in cold process
soap. WSP recommends there
stained glass colorants mostly for
their melt and pour bases. I suggest
using some of WSPs CP safe
micas/pigments and blending them
to get a similar color.

We tested this and used

Crafters Choice European
Spa Salt - Medium Grain and it
held 16 oz of this salt. So it will
vary depending on which bath
salt you use.

The glitter may initially stick to

your skin, but will easily rinse o
before exiting the tub. If the bath
bomb has a high oil content then
the glitter may be harder to rinse
o.
