Panthers enter MBC schedule with 2 wins

The Ellsworth football team

is headed to the Middle Border
Conference season on the heels
of two one-sided non-conference wins.
The most recent win was
Friday when the Panthers made
a trip to Colfax and won 47-14.
It was a dominant rst half for
the Panthers as they led 40-0 at
halftime.
Our defense played really
well. They hardly gave up any
rst downs in the rst half,
co-head coach Jason Janke
said. We got the ball back fairly quickly. Colfax, they didnt
really have the speed to keep
up with Logan Melstrom, Ryan

McGregor and Jake Sigler.

The Panthers jumped ahead
early, leading 27-0 after the rst
quarter. Sigler led the Panthers
by gaining 184 yards on 12
carries, scoring three touchdowns. Melstrom caught three
passes for 95 yards and two
touchdowns, plus an additional
touchdown he scored rushing
the ball. McGregor caught four
passes for 102 yards and one
touchdown.
Quarterback Drake Flom
completed nine passes for 233
yards Friday, including three
for touchdowns.
The Panthers defense did
not allow any points while
Colfax was in the game on
Friday. The Vikings scored all
14 points in the fourth quarter.

Those 14 points are all the

oense that the Panthers have
allowed defensively this season. Co-head coach Rob Heller
said the Panthers familiarity
with the defense has paid o.
I think the kids are buying
into the scheme, theyre interested in being coachable, its
their second year in the system
so they are a little more familiar
with it, Heller said. I think
they are just playing ball and
believing in the scheme.
Defensively, Sawyer Strom
intercepted a pass, and Cole
Tonjes also blocked a punt that
led to a Panthers touchdown.
Kicker Wyatt Hines knocked
down ve of his seven extra
point attempts.
The Panthers are now 2-0

on the season after picking up

the two non-conference road
victories. The Middle Border
Conference season starts next
week with Prescott coming to
EHS this Friday.
Janke said the Panthers
understand the schedule will
continue to get tougher once
the Middle Border Conference
season starts.
Our kids have had that year
of getting pounced on a little bit, and they are hungry,
Janke said. At the same time,
we understand that we have
played a couple of teams that
are rebuilding, and our kids
understand that the Middle
Border is a dierent animal.

Cardinals...
versus Spring Valley.
But the Wolves made
some mistakes in the second
half, and three turnovers also
did not help. Head coach
Jerry Hannack said Spring
Valley played like the better
team on Friday.
Turnovers, and we
couldnt control the line of
scrimmage, Hannack said
about their mistakes in the
second half. Thats the two
biggest factors. They were a
better football team than we
were tonight by a longshot.
Ebensperger
scored
Elmwood-Plum Citys rst
half touchdown on a fouryard touchdown catch in the
second quarter. Holt also
scored a touchdown on a oneyard run in the fourth quarter.
Elmwood-Plum Citys
losing streak to Spring Valley
goes back at least ve years.
Hannack said the recent string
of success for Spring Valley
versus the Wolves could
be attributed to their strong
teams.
Theyve got some good
talent, and they are well
coached, Hannack said.
They do a great job.
