Through this course students should be able to

understand about crop husbandry of different crops

explain approaches towards the scientific management of different field crops

describe production practices of field crops

understand agronomic practices of cereals, pulses and oilseeds

Unit I
Package and practices of Cereals (Paddy and Maize) : Origin and Botanical
description, Climate and soil requirements, Varieties, Cropping System, Field
preparation, Seed and sowing, Irrigation, Manures and Fertilizer, Weed management,
Disease and Pest management, Harvesting, Threshing and Yield, Storage and Grading
techniques
Unit II
Production practices of Kharif pulses (Urd bean, Mung bean and Pigeon pea :
Origin, Soil and Climatic requirements, Botanical description and Recent varieties,
Cropping System, Land Preparation, Seed and Sowing, Irrigation and Weed
management, Nutrient Management, Pest and Disease Management, Harvest and
Yield, Storage practices
Unit III
Package and practice of Kharif oil seed crops (Groundnut and Sesame) :
Geographic origin and Climate, Botany and Varieties, Soil and Climate requirement,
Seed and sowing, Manures and Fertilizer, Integrated Pest and Disease Management,
Nutrient and Weed Management, Harvest and Yield, Storage
Unit IV
Package and practice of minor millets (Foxtail, Proso, Finger millet) : Climate
and Soil, Botany, Agronomic practices, Intercultural operation, Harvest, Yield and its
storage
Unit V
Production technology of forage crops (Cowpea, Napier, Cluster bean) :
Climate and Soil, Botany and Varieties, Field preparation, Seed and its sowing,
Intercultural operations, Harvesting and storage
Unit VI
Package and practice of fiber crops (Cotton, Jute, Sunhemp) : Climate and
Soil, Varieties and Field preparation, Sowing and Water management, Integrated
Nutrient Management, Pest and Disease, Weed and its management, Harvest, Yield
and its storage
