ABSTRACT
This study examines the challenges and prospects of teaching and
learning religious and moral education in Nigeria Secondary Schools. It
identifies important concepts of values in human relationship; sharing,
hope, unity, cooperation, etc. The paper discovers that conventional
teaching method is often adopted for the teaching of moral issues in the
Senior Secondary classes. This method is characterized by recitation,
indoctrination and memorization of facts. This retards the development
and demonstration of moral traits and values in the learners. Hence,
there is prevalence of moral decadence among the students. The work
posits that there is prospect in the Nigeria socio-political and economic
system if appropriate approaches are adopted in the teaching of moral
issues. It recommended, among other things, that values clarification
and informal approaches should be adopted in the teaching of moral
issues in Nigerian schools.
