Since it was established in 1861, Caixa has always sought to be more than just a bank, but a truly
present ins tu on in the lives of millions of Brazilians.
The eec ve par cipa on of CAIXA in the development of our ci es, and their presence in the life
of every ci zen of this country, is consolidated through programs and nancing project of
infrastructure and sanita on of the brazilian municipali es; the implementa on and
administra on of social programs of the Federal Government; the gran ng of loans at aordable
interest for all and housing nancing to the whole society, as well as several other broad social
outreach programs.
"xodos" documents the history of mankind in transit. It is a disturbing story, because few
people leave their homeland willingly. In general they become migrants, refugees or exiled
constrained by forces that they do not have control, eeing poverty, repression or wars.
They leave with the belongings they can carry, go forward as they can on board of fragile boats,
squeezed into trains and trucks, on foot... They travel alone, with family or in groups. Some know
where they are going, condent that a be er life expects them. Others are simply eeing, relieved
to be alive. Many will not be able to get anywhere.
"More than ever, I feel that the human race is only one. There are color dierences, languages,
cultures and opportuni es, but the feelings and people reac ons are the same" said Sebas o
Salgado in the presenta on of the photographic exhibi on "xodos" launched at the turn of the
century and result of the work developed by the photographer in partnership with his wife, Llia
Deluiz Wanick Salgado, for six years, covering 40 countries.
In the special exhibi on of "xodos", with the curatorship of Llia Deluiz Wanick Salgado,
performed by Via Press Comunicao e Eventos visitors can check the posters divided into ve
central themes - Africa, Struggle for Land, Refugees and Migrated, Megaci es and Children
Portraits. They are impac ng images that reects the escape of migrants, refugees and displaced
persons in dierent parts of the world; the unparalleled tragedy in Africa; the rural exodus, the
land conict and the chao c urbaniza on in La n America; images of the new Asian
megalopolises, and in each of these extreme situa ons, the record of the ones that, even in the
middle of the chaos, keeps alive the ame of hope and human dignity, the children.
The collec on of 60 images that make up this exhibi on was donated by Llia DeLuiz Wanick and
Sebas o Salgado to Terra Ins tute, an environmental NGO that the couple founded in 1998 in
Aimors-MG, which acts in the environmental recovery of all Vale do Rio Doce a Atlan c Forest
region between the states of Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo. All the resources obtained from this
exhibi on will go to ac ons developed by the ins tu on, such as reforesta on of degraded areas,
produc on of na ve seedlings, springs restora on, promo on of sustainable agriculture and
environmental educa on, as well as a support in its maintenance.

REFUGIADOS
E MIGRADOS
SERIES: REFUGEES AND MIGRATED
O en mes migrants leave their homes full of hope; refugees usually do so out of fear. S ll, each in
their own way, all of them are vic ms of forces beyond their control: poverty and violence. Most of
Third World migrants heads to the city, but the most ambi ous have the United States and Europe as
a goal. Their journeys are long and full of dangers, but supported by the dream of a be er life. Those
who become refugees, however, do not do this own will. This was the case of Kurds, Afghans,
Bosnians, Serbs and Kosovars, who had to leave their homes forced by war and, like the Pales nians,
who have spent decades in refugee camps, o en feed the desire to return home. For some of them,
however, the break with the past is permanent: from refugees they will become exiles, and from exiles
they will become migrants too.

FRICA
SERIES: AFRICA
Africa was trauma zed by suering and despair. Its people were deeply marked by poverty, hunger,
corrup on, despo sm and war. Thirty years a er Sebas o Salgado visited the con nent for the rst
me, in general, things had go en worse. Mozambique was an excep on: decades of civil war had
nally reached the end, allowing that hundreds of thousands of refugees return home. Meanwhile,
Angola and South Sudan remained ravaged by war. At certain mes, the impression was that United
States and Europe had wiped o Africa from the map, giving it up for lost. There is no doubt that very
li le they did to stop the 1994 genocide in Rwanda where about 1 million Tutsi lost their lives. In
sequence, Rwanda problems reached Zaire, with hundreds of thousands of Hutu refugees turning
into new vic ms of Central Africa ethnic policy.

SERIES: STRUGGLE FOR LAND
The history of La n America was also shaped by the migra on of tens of millions of peasants to urban
areas. Most of them leave the eld due to poverty, since the best farmable lands are concentrated in
the hands of a wealthy minority. "xodos" reveals images of those who refused to give up: the
indigenous people of the amazon region in their ght to remain in their tribal lands; in southern
Mexico, the zapa stas rebels took up arms to recover the lands they had lost; the Landless Movement
in Brazil, which dared to appropriate private proper es despite the repression. In general, however,
the ba le was lost: in the villages of the ecuadorian mountains the photographer went to meet a
popula on formed by women and children because the men had migrated. The consequence of all
this movement are the uncontrollable vast metropolis that have formed, surrounded by slums
crowded of migrants.

MEGACIDADES
SERIES: MEGACITIES
irresis veis.
Cidade do Mxico e So Paulo.
The exodus of rural poverty gave Asia a new urban prole. For the peasants of the Indian state of Bihar,
for example, as well as for farmers in the island of Mindanao in the Philippines and Vietnam shermen,
ci es became irresis ble a rac on poles. From Cairo to Shanghai, from Istanbul to Jakarta, migra on
(mul plied by high birth rates) generated megaci es only equaled, in La n America, by Mexico City
and So Paulo. In Asia, however, the change was even more sudden, with slums spreading and new and
resplendent nancial centers popping up around the same me. Shanghai, for example, changed to
the point of becoming unrecognizable over no more than a decade. Not even in the face of poor living
condi ons, migrants stopped believing that they took a step toward a be er life.

RETRATOS DE
CRIANA
SERIES: CHILDREN PORTRAITS
In any crisis situa on, whether war, poverty or natural disaster, children are the main vic ms. More
physically weak, they are always the rst to succumb to hunger or disease. Emo onally vulnerable, they
are unable to understand why they are being driven from their homes, why the neighbors began to
a ack them, why they were living in a slum surrounded by debris or in a refugee eld surrounded by
pain. Free from responsibility for their own des ny, they are, by deni on, innocent. Even so - unless
they are seriously ill -, even in the worst circumstances children are the source of pure energy. Every
photographer who has worked among refugees or urban migrants found this. There are children
everywhere, in general more visible than adults. When they see a camera, give enthusiasm leaps, laugh,
wave. Some mes their joy of living comes to intercept the photographic record of what is happening to
them. How is possible that a smiling child can represent the deepest misfortune? If at the beginning of
the project the photographer had not planned to publish those pictures, in the course of travel
eventually came to the conclusion that they deserved a proper forum. Their story may be the same as
the parents, but they experience it - and tell it otherwise. They appear beau ful, happy, proud,
though ul or sad. For a brief moment, they were able to say "I am".
