Course

: MEE354 - Kinematics and Dynamics of Machinery

Class NBR :
Time

Slot: B1+TB1

2015

: Three Hours

Max.Marks:100
(Assume Missing Data)
Answer any FIVE Questions
(5 X 20 = 100 Marks)

1.

a) Design a cam for opening an exhaust valve of an oil engine. It is required to give

[15]

equal uniform acceleration and retardation during opening and closing of the valve
each of which corresponds to 600 of cam rotation. The valve must remain fully
open position for 200 of cam rotation. The lift of the valve is 37.5 mm and the least
radius of the cam is 40mm. The follower is provided with a roller of radius 20 mm
and its line of stroke passes through the axis of cam.
b) Sketch neatly the displacement, velocity and acceleration curves of a parobolic

[5]

motion followers.

2.

a) The mass of turbine rotor of a ship is 20 tonnes and has a radius of gyration of

[12]

0.60 m. Its speed is 2000 rpm. The ship pitched 6 degrees above and 6 degrees
below the horizontal position. A complete oscillation takes 30 seconds and the
motion is simple harmonic. Determine maximum gyroscopic couple and maximum
angular acceleration of the ship during pitching.
b) Discuss briefly the various types of belts used for the transmission of power.

3.

[8]

In an epicyclic gear train the internal wheels A and B and compound wheels C and D
rotate independently about axis O. The wheels E and F rotate on pins fixed to the
arm G. E gears with A and C. Wheel F gears with B and D. All the wheels have the
same module and the numbers of teeth are: TC = 28; TD = 26; TE = TF = 18.

(i) Sketch the arrangement.

(ii) Find the number of teeth on A and B.
(iii) If the arm G makes 100 rpm clockwise and A is fixed, find the speed of B.
(iv) If the arm G makes 100 rpm clockwise and wheel A makes 10 rpm counter
clockwise, find the speed of wheel B.

4.

a) A body of mass of 50 kg is supported by an elastic structure of stiffness 10 kN/m.

[16]

The motion of the body is controlled by a dashpot such that the amplitude of
vibration decreases to one tenth of its original value after two complete cycles of
vibration. Determine (i) the damping force at 1 m/s; (ii) the damping ratio; and
(iii) the natural frequency of vibration.
b) Plot the variation of displacement with respect to time for under damped and over

[4]

damped systems.

The masses B, C, and D revolve in the planes 80 mm, 160 mm and 280 mm
respectively from the plane of mass A and are angularly located at 60 , 135 and 270
respectively measured clockwise from the masses A located at the end of the shaft. The
shaft is dynamically balanced by two masses which are located at 50 mm radii and
revolving in planes mid way between those masses A and B and masses C and D
respectively. Determine the magnitude and position of balancing masses.

6.

a) The length of crank and connecting rod of a vertical reciprocating engine are

[12]

300 mm and 1.5 m respectively. The crank is rotating at 180 rpm clockwise. Find
(i) Acceleration of piston, (ii) velocity of piston and (iii) angular acceleration of the
connecting rod when the crank has turned through 40 degree from the inner dead
center.
b) Describe any two inversions of double slider crank chain with example.

7.

In the mechanism, as shown in Fig.1, the crank OA rotates at 20 revolutions per minute
anticlockwise and gives motion to the sliding blocks B and D. The dimensions of the
various links are OA = 300 mm; AB = 1200 mm, BC = 450 mm and CD = 450 mm.
For the given configuration, determine:
(i) the velocity of sliding at B and D;
(ii) the angular velocity of CD;
(iii) the linear acceleration of D; and
(iv) the angular acceleration of CD.
