CGS Arrival Checklist for New

International Students
Required tasks :
Report Arrival and Check-In at the Center for Global Services
before school starts: The US government requires all new and transfer F-1/ J-1

international students to report their arrival to Rutgers. To report your arrival, you
must check-in at the Center for Global Services during designated times throughout
orientation week or during regular working hours after orientation week. Students
are required to complete this check-in process as soon as possible on their entry
into the United States but no later than within two weeks from the start of classes.
During check-in you should bring your passports and I-20s/Ds-2019s as well as the
same for your visa dependents. Failure to complete this process in a timely manner
could result in losing your ability to remain legally in the US.

Participate in orientations and Convocation

International Student Orientation Program:

Graduate Students: Graduate School Orientation
Undergraduate Students should attend Convocation
Also be sure to check with your school and/or department to see if
there are any orientation sessions available. Some schools require your
participation at orientation.

Attend a Staying in Legal Status Workshop

Graduate Students: Attend one of the Staying in Legal Status workshops during
orientation week. Bring your passport and I-20/DS-2019 to the workshop.
Undergraduate Students: Complete the online workshop on the Enrollment
Pathway. You will need to attend this workshop in-person when you have an oncampus job and need necessary paperwork to be authorized to work on-campus. A
schedule of upcoming workshops held throughout the year is available on the
events calendar on our website.

Update Personal Information (Emergency contact, Address,

Phone Number and Email) on the MyRutgers portal:
https://my.rutgers.edu/portal/render.userLayoutRootNode.uP

ADD YOUR US address and phone number to our system: All international students
are REQUIRED to provide a local address and phone number. Your student record
cannot be validated/registered in the government database without this information
(which is a legal requirement within 30 days of the start of the semester).

If you fail to update your US address and phone number, you are at risk of losing
your lawful status in the US. Even if you are staying in a hotel, enter that address,
then update your address again once you move to your new apartment or residence
hall. Even if you have a temporary number, enter it in the system and update it
when you have a new number.

Register for enough courses to study full-time

To register, graduate students report to their academic advisor, a staff or faculty
member of the department, who guides students through course selection.
Undergraduate students attend an academic advising session during orientation to
meet with an academic advisor for assistance with course selection.
Special Note: If you are NOT enrolled full-time AND you do NOT have CGS approval,
you are at risk of losing your lawful status in the US.

Get your RUconnection ID Card

You must activate your NetID and register for classes to obtain a card. Visit
ruconnection.rutgers.edu to find out where to get yours.

Student Health Insurance and Immunizations

All students are required to have health insurance. Learn more about the required
health insurance and understanding the US healthcare system by attending one of
the health insurance sessions during orientation or from our website.
