Nageswarar Temple
Kumbeswarar, Tamil Nadu, IndiaThe 12th century king, Aditya
Chola,built Nageswarar Temple temple in such away that for
three days in the month of Chittirai (Apr-May), the suns rays

an opening in theeastern tower. The Nandi, Bali Peetham andflagstaff, all

in a row in front of the sanctum,have been placed in such a way so as not

of thesanctum.  According to legend, both the serpent god,Adi
Sesha and Surya, the sun god,worshipped Shiva here. There is a well in
thetemple called the Naga Tirtham. It is aspacious, quiet temple, with a
well-ornamented rajagopuram and widepraharams.

Kumbakonam town, Kumbakonam,Tamil Nadu, IndiaA temple that is not
so big or ancient butpotent and well loved is the famous Vishnusthala,
theChakrapani (he who holds the chakra ordiscus) Temple. A flight of
steps leads up tothe sanctum of Vishnu who is hererepresented as
Sudarshana, with a third eye,holding weapons in all his eight arms,
hishair fiery with energy. With him is hisconsort, Sudarshanavalli
Thayar.  Brahma, Surya and Agni are all depicted asworshipping
Chakrapani, who is said to cureall ailments and shower prosperity on
hisdevotees. Many devotees come here to doSudarshana homams (fire
sacrifices) to wardoff ill health and enemies. Close to theentrance of the
main sanctum are brassstatues of Maratha king Sarabhoji and hisqueen,
both great devotees of Chakrapani.The king, it is believed, was cured of a
severestomach pain by worshipping at this temple.

Airavateeswarar Temple
Thanjavur District, Kumbakonam,Tamil Nadu, IndiaThe
magnificentAiravateeswara Temple here was built in the12th century by
King Raja Raja II, withsubsequent additions by the Nayak kings.Declared
a UNESCO World Heritage Site(one of the three within this region,
theother two being Thanjavurs BrihadeeswaraTemple and
Gangaikondacholapuram , theAiravateeswara Temple is being
maintainedby the Archaeological Survey of India thoughit comes under
the patronage of theThanjavur royal family.  This is a temple in
which one needs tospend at least a few hours to take in thesheer wealth
of sculptural detail and theamazing beauty of the stone-work. A lot
of renovation has been done to preserve thetemples grandeur. Among the
highlights of this extraordinary temple are: the lovelyvimanam; the hall of
the main sanctum,which has been built at a height and isshaped like a
chariot supported by wheelson one side and horses and elephants onthe
other; the detail in the sculpture on thepillars in the main hall, which
depict scenesfrom the Puranas as well as from the lives of the people of
the 12th century - acrobats,entertainers, dance poses and
domesticscenes. The sculptures are innovative. Thesteps leading to the
top of the bali peetham(sacrificial stone) have been made of a kindof
stone that reproduces musical notes if you roll a stone down them. On the
outerwalls of the temple are niches housingvarious deities.

Mullaivananathar Temple
Sri Mullaivananathar Temple,Thirumullaivasal, Nagapattinam Dist.,Tamil
Nadu, IndiaTheMullaivananathar Temple in this smallvillage has a large
rajagopuram and a tankcalled Kshirakundam (pond of milk). In thissthala,
Goddess Garbharakshambigai (shewho guards the womb) watches
overpregnancies and ensures safe deliveries
Shiva is here called Mullaivananathar,because the temple was built in a
garden of mullai (jasmine) creepers.&nbsphe lingam in the main sanctum
isswayambhu, and was found in an anthill.There is a mark snaking
across the surfaceof the lingam as if a creeper had twinedaround it.
Devotees suffering from chronicailments make offerings of
punugu(secretion of the civet cat, with which thelingam is coated) to
regain their health.Childless women light ghee lamps in thesanctum of the
goddess to gain the boon of offspring, and pregnant women pray to herto
grant them a safe pregnancy anddelivery.&nbsccording to legend, a sage
called Nitravarlived in this kshetra with his wife Vedigai.Once, when the
sage was away, his heavilypregnant wife was slow in answering the callfor
alms from an ascetic. He cursed her sothat she may suffer an ailment,
which woulddeform her foetus. The alarmed Vedigaiprayed to
Garbharakshambigai and thegoddess made the foetus well again.Nitravar
and Vedigai then prayed to thegoddess to extend her mercy to all
pregnantwomen who worshipped her. In front of thegoddess sanctum is a
golden cradle. Thosewho have prayed here for a safe deliverylater return
to place the infant in the cradleto seek the goddess blessings (the fee is
Rs500). The temple also offers a sanctifiedherbal oil for pregnant women
to rub ontheir abdomens to ensure a safe pregnancy
