Superstitions
When you make coffee, always put the sugar in the cup before the coffee and
one day you'll become a rich man.
If you want to have enough money, then you should have the figure of an
elephant in the house. But be sure to turn it back toward the door.
Hand Gestures/Greetings
Men shake hands with one another similar to Americans they shake while
holding steady eye contact.
If women wish to shake a mans hand she should extend her hand first.
Usually women greet men and other women with two pecks on the cheek
going from right to left, while patting ones back.
Body language
A very unique body language is the figa, represented by inserting the thumb between the
middle and index finger. This gesture is supposed to keep away pain, suffering and envy and it is
an amulet that protects against the evil-eye.
When two people are close to each other, they will show it by rubbing two index fingers
together.
Since this is more of a touching society, people stand close together when conversing or when
standing in lines.
Communication/Decision Making
Power Structure
The different distribution of power justifies the fact that power holders have
more benefits than the less powerful in society. (similar to U.S.)

Individualism vs Collectivism
Power Distance
Power distance refers to the way in which power is distributed and the extent
to which the less powerful accept that power is distributed unequally.
Brazil just like the U.S. allows the so called top elite or 10% have most of
the power while its a constant struggle within the range of power and the
idea of rich and poor.
Uncertainty Avoidance
Brazil shows a strong need for rules and elaborate legal systems in order to
structure life. The individuals need to obey these laws, however, is weak. If
rules however cannot be kept, additional rules are dictated. In Brazil, as in all
high Uncertainty Avoidance societies, bureaucracy, laws and rules are very
important to make the world a safer place to live in.
Men are tasked with providing and keeping the family structured
Very different from American culture with women taking a prominent role in
the workforce.
Current Events
