While trying to reinstall the printer driver on the USB port in Windows XP and 2000, the Plug and Play
routine fails to appear.

Open Device Manager. Right-click My Computer , click Properties , click the Hardware tab,
and then click the Device Manager tab.

Uninstall the USB Printing Support. Click the plus ( + ) sign to expand the Universal Serial
Bus controllers section, right-click USB Printing Support , and select Uninstall , and then
click OK .

Disconnect the USB cable from the printer, and then uninstall the HP LaserJet software driver
using the CD.

Allow the CD to auto run. If the CD does not auto run, double-click My Computer , and then
double-click the CD or DVD drive in which the CD has been inserted. The Welcome screen
displays.

Select the Uninstall option on the Welcome screen and click Next .

The last screen will be the Uninstall Complete screen. At this point, unplug the USB cable
from the printer, select Yes, I want to restart my computer now , and click Finish .

After the computer has finished the restart process, reinstall the software from the HP
LaserJet software driver CD.

Solution three: Manually remove the PID key(s) from the registry
Follow the steps below to remove the LaserJet Registry keys.
CAUTION:Be sure to try the first two solutions before attempting this solution. Manually
editing the registry should be used as a last resort to solve this issue. Changing the
Registry incorrectly could cause your computer to stop working. HP recommends
making a back up of the registry before trying this solution. Information on making
a backup of the registry can be found on the HP Web site.

In the table below, locate the PID number for the LaserJet product you want to remove.

Then in the Registry Editor, select that PID key and press the Delete key on the keyboard.
