Outcomes:
Students know what a poem is, particularly a shape poem and a limerick.
Students are able to write either a shape poem or a limerick.

Identify and explain characteristic text structures and language features used in imaginative,
informative and persuasive texts to meet the purpose of the text (ACELY1701)
Use metalanguage to describe the effects of ideas, text structures and language features on
particular audiences (ACELT1795)
Understand how texts vary in purpose, structure and topic as well as the degree of
formality (ACELA1504)

Rationale:
Elicit students prior knowledge of
poetry.

Activity:
Begin by asking what students know
about poetry, if they know any famous
poets or poems.
Write down definition of a poem

Provide students with some firm


knowledge of what a poem is
particularly a shape poem and
limerick through explanation and
looking at examples, so they are able
to go on and write their own.

Look at some examples of a limerick


and a shape poem, and explore the
features of each
Begin to think about which type of
poem to write and begin to write one.

Outcomes:
Students further explore features of a shape poem and limerick as they write
their own.
ACARA:
Plan, draft and publish imaginative, informative and persuasive print and multimodal texts,
choosing text structures, language features, images and sound appropriate to purpose
and audience (ACELY1704)
Show how ideas and points of view in texts are conveyed through the use of vocabulary, including
idiomatic expressions, objective and subjective language, and that these can change according
to context (ACELY1698)

Refresh students memory on shape

Re-look at some examples and read a

poems and limericks.

Provide students with some ideas and


prompts to write their poems and give
them confidence.

Create literary texts that experiment with structures, ideas and stylistic features of selected

Re-read and edit students own and others work using agreed criteria for text structures
and language features (ACELY1705)

Rationale:
Allows them to develop and express
their creative side.
Hanging students work up in
classroom, shows that what they
create is something to be proud of
and allows them to see what others
have done, providing opportunity for
feedback and development in ideas.

Activity:
Transfer poem to a good copy to
display in classroom, using coloured
paper, pens, markers and other
stationary to create an aesthetically
pleasing piece of literature.
