What are the good features of a handout?

It is specific and concise.


It highlights the important ideas and concepts about a certain topic.
It is organized for the convenience of the students.
Which of these features are present in the handout I made?

All of the features that I mentioned above are present on the handout I made. All
the important details of the pieces of information that I included are carefully
selected and laid out in organized manner.
Which features are not present in the handout I made?

All of the features that I actually cited above have manifested itself on the handout I
made. In other words, I made an effective handout for those who will be using it.

MY REFLECTIONS

Which difficulties, if any, did you encounter in making the handouts? How did you
overcome them?

Making handouts for the lesson that you will be discussing is not an easy task. You
have to consider the availability of the resources and time as well. Good thing if you
have the books, the internet and other references. But what if its the other way
around, its another different story. Remember that handouts are more detailed
compared to what the teacher is showing in his/her slide presentation. It is not just
a mere set of words arranged in an organized manner. It is more of a detailed,
thoroughly constructed, comprehensive sets of concepts and ideas sequenced
together to guide the students during class discussions.
What tips can you give teachers regarding preparation of handouts?

The following are simple tips in preparing effective handouts:

The teacher should always make sure that he/she has plenty of resources around for
his/her handouts. Good thing if he/she have the books, the internet and other
references. But what if its the other way around, its another different story.
Remember that handouts are more detailed compared to what they are showing in
their slide presentations. It is not just a mere set of words arranged in an organized
manner. It is more of a detailed, thoroughly constructed, comprehensive sets of
concepts and ideas sequenced together to guide the students during their class
discussions.
Enough preparation is the key to effective handouts. Before the day the teacher will
deliver his/her lesson, he/she should have himself/herself acquainted with his/her
topics for discussion. This will give him/her enough time to familiarize as well as
prepare the necessary handouts that he/she will be providing to the class.

What are the good features of a slide presentation?

The following are the good features of a slide presentation:

It editable and customizable. It allows anyone to incorporate pictures, videos and


music from the internet easily.
Its entertaining. It can hold the viewers attention through the use of graphics,
videos and music. Considering that most of the students today are technologically
advance, tool such as this increases their involvement and interaction.
It is handy and portable. Since it is an electronic file, anyone can use it anytime as
long as theres a computer to use with.
It is one of the best teaching aids for visual learners. Anyone can easily incorporate
colourful graphics and font styles to make more attractive and stunning.
Which of these features are present in the slide presentation you made?

Almost all of the features I stated above are present on the slide presentation I
made. I saved it as a Microsoft Powerpoint file which is as of this time; one of the
most commonly used applicationin creating stunning slide presentations. For my
slides to be attractive and pleasing, I incorporated graphics into it. I put colourful
images and used stylish fonts as well. I also considered the use of appropriate
colour combination for the presentation. I really made sure that the viewers would
not just enjoy but understand the topic I presented to them.
Which features are not present in the slide presentation you made?

There are few among those features I presented which I did not include on the slide
presentation I made. That includes the incorporation of video and audio clips.
Sometimes, it doesnt really necessary for anyone to put all of those features in a
single slide presentation. That would be overkill. Instead of conveying the important
points about the topic, the viewers might get annoyed and distracted on the sound
and video clips that would suddenly play along the presentation. Too much graphics
should also be avoided. It gradually draws out the attention of the viewer away from
the main point of discussion. Sometimes, it is not also pleasing to the eyes.

MY REFLECTIONS

What difficulties, if any, did you encounter in making the slide presentation? How
did you overcome them?
Making the slide presentation is an easy task for me. That is because I already had
the experience in making such activity before. The only thing that bothers me most
is time. It really takes a moment to search those appropriate graphic images and
clips on the internet especially when youre planning to make youre presentation
stunning and beatiful. As a remedy, I used keywords with plus and minus signs
to broaden up or narrow down search results. Despite that, the most important
thing that every presenter should remember, it doesnt really matter how much
graphics youre gonna include in the presentation as long as it conveys the
important points of the topic you are presenting in a nice and enjoyable manner
without compromising its clarity.

CLASS OBSERVATION GUIDE

1. What is the lesson all about? What are the teachers objectives?

During my observation, the science teacher discussed about the solar system and
its components. But before she started, she mentioned about her lessons
objectives. These were:

To learn about the components of the solar system.


To learn about planets and space.
To learn about comets, asteroids and other heavenly bodies
2. Note the important concepts that the teacher is emphasizing.

The teacher emphasized about data gathering and research which is under inquirybased approach of teaching
3. Note the skills that the teacher is developing in the learners.

The following are the skills that are being developed by the teacher during the
session:

Critical thinking skills the teacher elicits higher levels thinking.


Reasoning skills the teacher develops deductive and inductive reasoning abilities of her students through series of questions.
Reading and writing skills generally, these are the most commonly developed
skills of the students during class sessions.

MY REFLECTIONS

1. Describe your experience surfing the internet for appropriate electronic


resources for the class? Did you find it easy or difficult?

Based on the experiences I had surfing the internet looking for appropriate
electronic resources, I found it very easy. Since I was in high school, I was gradually
exposed to the internet. Every now and then, drove by my own curiosity, I spent
hours to explore the wonders of this information highway. Through those learning
experiences, it gave and equipped me with the right knowledge and skills to utilize
and maximize the benefits it brought to us this generation. With the help of
computers and other internet-capable devices, I could easily access and browse the
web, choose among thousands of different resources readily available in a few
clicks.

2. How did you choose which electronic resources to include here? What did you
consider? Explain.

Before deciding which electronic resources to include in the activity, I came with
some factors to consider. These are the following:

Availability Is it readily available in the classroom and the surrounding community?


Accessibility Is it accessible for the students? Speaking of electronic resources on
the net, does the classroom have an internet connection?
Practicability is it practical for the students to use this kind of electronic resource?
It is expensive or cheap?
Suitability Is it suitable for their age and intellectual capacity and ability?
Objective-matching does the electronic resource matches the objectives of the
lesson/topic? Is it related to the instruction given by the teacher?

3. Reflect on your technology skills What skills do you already have and what
skills would you continue to work on to be better at utilizing electronic resources?

I am proficient in terms of my basic and mid-level computer skills. Thats the most
important thing I need for me to utilize and maximize the electronic resources
around me especially those over the internet. With regards to various electronic
devices and gadgets, I know how utilize and make use of them. Aside from that, I
have some skill in photography and digital arts.I do graphics and photo editing with
computer applications like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. As of now, I am
currently studying web-design. I could sense that I have the potential to master this
skill soon. That is why; despite of its complexity and sophistication, I am still very
eager to learn it as a whole. I know learning is a never ending process. There are
still a lot of things in life that I must learn and understand.

I have here some flash cards for bartending which I made myself. I found these
instructional materials very useful since it can greatly optimize the learning
experiences of each student.
