Sumatran Rhinoceros
The Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus Sumatrensis) is the smallest rhino
species. It is also the most distinctive rhinoceros. It has been hunted a lot that it is
almost extinct. There are less than 300 Sumatran rhinoceroses surviving in Malaysia
and Indonesia. Between 1985 and 1995, the number of Sumatran rhinos declined by
50 percent because of poaching and habitat destruction.
The Sumatran rhinoceros has unique grey or reddish-brown coat. It is believed
to be the only survivor of the lineage that included the woolly rhinoceros. Sumatran
rhinos stand up to 1.4 m (4.6 ft) at the shoulder and weigh up to 1,000 kg (2,200 lb).
They have folded skin, like the other Asian rhinos, except that it is covered with
coarse, bristly hair. The Sumatran is the only rhino in Asia with two horns. The front
horn is usually the longest, reaching a length of 90 cm (36 inch), and the rear one is
sometimes so small that the animal looks as if it is single-horned.
They live mainly in forest-covered hills near water and are known to be good
at climbing slopes and swimming. They move mainly at night, and spend most of the
day wallowing in mud-holes and pools. Sumatran rhinoceroses usually feed on
leaves, twigs, and fruits.
Female rhinos reach sexual maturity at about the age of five or six. The males
mature between the ages of seven and eight. However, they do not father calves
until they have claimed a territory, which may take them three or four years. Rhinos
always have a single calf, born after a gestation period of 15 to 18 months. The calf
may feed on its mothers milk for up to two years, and it usually remains with its
mother until she is about to give birth once more. The calf is only raised by its
mother.

Mahogany
In the natural rainforest, Mahogany is a very large canopy tree, sometimes
reaching over 150 feet in height, with trunks sometimes more than 6 feet in diameter
above a large basal buttress. It is a generally open-crowned tree, with gray to
brownish-red fissured bark.
Mahogany is perhaps the most valuable timber tree in the whole of Latin
America and has been heavily exploited for most of this century. Mahogany is
becoming increasingly rare, and is already extinct in parts of its original range. It is
listed as threatened in "Arboles Maderables en Peligro de Extincin en Costa Rica"
and is listed in CITES Appendix III.
Mahogany varies from yellowish, reddish, pinkish, or salmon colored when
freshly cut, to a deep rich red, to reddish brown as the wood matures with age.
Mahogany is fine to medium texture, with uniform to interlocking grain, ranging from
straight to wavy or curly. Irregularities in the grain often produce highly attractive
figures such as fiddle back or mottle. Mahogany polishes to a high luster, with
excellent working and finishing characteristics. It responds well to hand and machine
tools, has good nailing and screwing properties, and turns and carves superbly.
Mahogany is regarded by many as the world's premier wood for fine cabinetry,
high-class furniture, trimming fine boats, pianos and other musical instruments,
sculpture, joinery, turnery, figured and decorative veneer, interior trim, and carving.

tornadoes are known as satellite tornadoes. These small offspring, about 50 yards
across, can be very fierce and do lots of damage.

Text 4 is for question number 16-20
Chinese Traffic Jam
Motorists in China are experiencing a traffic jam from hell. Thousands of
drivers have been stuck in their cars for ten days on the Beijing-Tibet Expressway just
outside the Chinese capital. The gridlock started on August 14th when roadworks
began.
The bad news is that the chaos will continue for another month. The tailbacks
stretch back for 100km. The situation has been made worse by dozens of cars
breaking down or overheating. Around 400 traffic police have been assigned to patrol
the jam to make sure tensions dont rise too far. The horrendous snarl-up is the result
of the explosion in the number of cars on Chinese roads. As China becomes
wealthier, more people are buying cars, thus causing more traffic problems.
Drivers trapped in the traffic jam know they have to be patient and sit for long
hours in their cars. There are no showers for them to use and if they need to use a
toilet, they have to lock their car and wander off to the nearest caf. There are many
complaints of local people taking advantage of the stranded motorists by charging
them more than double prices for drinks and snacks.
People are keeping themselves busy by playing cards or board games. Some
have reported feeling homesick. One truck driver Juang Shao expressed his
frustration over the situation: Ive missed my daughters birthday and the food in
my truck has probably turned into soup, he said. He said he was worried his truck
could be stuck in the traffic forever.
