4.

What are the occasions the unsymmetrical bending occurs?

Write the bending stress expressions for skew loaded one axis symmetrical member.
What is meant by thin walled section?
Calculate the sectional properties of thin inclined wall as shown in fig.

5. What is meant by parallel axis theorem?

6. What do you understand by product of inertia and polar moment of inertia?
7. Prove that neutral axis always passes through the centroidal axis.
8. Why are I-sections preferred over other cross sections?
9. Draw bending stress and shear stress variation across the depth for (a) rectangular (b) I section
10. Briefly write about the concept of lumping of cross-section.
PART B (3 10 = 30 marks)
11. a) A thin-walled, cantilever beam of unsymmetrical cross-section supports shear loads at its
free end as shown in Fig. Calculate the value of direct stress at the extremity of the lower
flange (point A) at a section half-way along the beam if the position of the shear loads is
such that no twisting of the beam occurs.

(OR)
b) Derive the bending stress expression for a beam of unsymmertical cross section if its
subjected to a bending moment of MX and MY. and modify the relationship with respect to
neutral axis.
12. a) A thin-walled beam has the cross-section shown in Fig. If the beam is subjected to a
bending moment Mx in the plane of the web 23 calculates and sketch the distribution of
direct stress in the beam cross-section.

(OR)
b) A thin walled cantilever with walls of constant thickness t has the cross section shown in
fig. it is loaded by a vertical force W at the tip and a horizontal force 2W at the mid section,
both forces acting through the shear centre. determine and sketch the distribution of direct
stress, according to the basic theory of bending, along the length of the beam for the points
1 and 2 of the cross section.

13. For a beam section shown in fig. has four stringers. The area of the four stringers A, B, C
and D are 6.25, 3.125, 4.5 and 6 cm2 respectively. Find the stresses in all the four stringers
of the section due to MX = 50 kNm and MY = -20 kNm where x and y are the centroidal
axes. Assume that webs and walls are ineffective bending.

(OR)
A thin-walled cantilever has a constant cross-section of uniform thickness with the
dimensions shown in Fig. It is subjected to a system of point loads acting in the planes of
the walls of the section in the directions shown. Calculate the direct stresses according to
the basic theory of bending at the points 1, 2 and 3 of the cross-section at the built-in end
and half-way along the beam. Illustrate your answer by means of a suitable sketch.
