Our fifth question from the second survey was an open question to find out more about why

the students chose to participate at these optional courses: Why did you join this optional
course(s)?. The answers varied and also the reasons were different. Most of the students purely
wanted to learn a brand-new language, as some described To learn something new. Some students
said that they wanted to improve their level, saying that they previously studied that language, for
example French and Spanish, and to improve their skills, like communication skills and even the
grammar. Like we were saying before, the reasons were diverse, one student answering that he
wanted to boost his competences and to self-improve.
Other students thought about their career, saying that they choose to study that particular
language to help them in building their career. For example they said that I consider that French
are very useful and I chose to go to this course because I want to become a teacher. Other reason
and passion for that particular culture related to the language, especially for the Asian ones. I am
passionate about the Japanese culture and I wanted to learn to learn Japanese and I wanted to
learn Chinese to find more about their culture. Finally, some said that they just joined the courses
of out curiosity.
For the sixth question we asked the students to give grades starting from 1 to 5, 1 being the
lowest grade and 5 the highest.

From the 32 answers collected, we discovered that 16% of the sample gave the grade 1, 2%
the grade 2, 31% the grade 3, 34% the grade 4 and, finally, 13% the grade 5.
We also did the following computations for this question: the mean is 3.21 which is the
average mark given by the students, the mode is equal with 4 which is the most met grade and the
median is 3 meaning that 16 students gave mark below 3 and the other half above 3.
Lastly, for the seventh question, we quizzed the students about the utility of the courses and,
again, we used the same concept as the previous question, meaning giving marks from 1 to 5.

Analyzing the results, we discovered that out of the 32 answers, 22% is represented by the
grade 1, 16% by the grade 2, 31% the grade 3, 22% the grade 4 and only 9% the grade 5. We also
did the same computations for this question: the mean is 2,81 (the average mark), the median is
equal with 3 meaning that half of the students marked the utility with grade below 3 and the other
half with above 3. The mode is also equal with 3, being also the most frequently given mark.
In conclusion, those are the results gathered by the second survey, which are described in
this chapter. We shall analyze them in the next chapter, and, where, also, we will compare it with
the other survey.
