Natural biological control agents
Assess dietary quality of prey

Null Hypothesis (Ho):

Prey quality does not significantly affect the reproduction of
the wolf spider Pardosa pseudoannulata
Alternative Hypothesis (Ha):
Prey quality significantly affects the reproduction of the wolf
spider Pardosa pseudoannulata

The following are the objectives of the study:

To investigate the predation efficiency of the wolf spider
Pardosa pseudoannulata on BPH and GLH by counting the
consumed BPH and GLH by the wolf spider
To assess the prey quality of two common irrigated rice preys,
Green leafhopper (Nephotettix virescens) and brown
planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens) through measurement of egg
production, hatching success, sizes of offspring and female
survival of the predator wolf spider.
To determine whether prey quality (assessed by the abovementioned parameters) can differentially affect the
reproduction of the wolf spider, Pardosa pseudoannulata.

Rearing of 2 Female and 2 Male Wolf Spiders collected from

the field
Once Spiders has reached adulthood, they will be allowed to
mate
Resulting Spiderlings will be subjected to dietary treatments
of BPH & GLH
(3rd and 4th instars) (5th and 6th instars) (7th and 8th instars)
(Egg-bearing female)

Spiders will be subjected to dietary treaments:

BPH, GLH, and Mixed BPH & GLH

Number of BPH and GLH consumed, Female survival from frist

oviposition, Size of offspring, numbers of egg produced will be
recorded

Individual Rearing Cages for the Wolf

Spider, P. pseudoannulata
11 X 8 X 6 cm clear freezer dishes
(sandwich boxes). A
45 mm diameter Ventilation hole (H) will
be covered by mesh No . 40 milk
strainer cloth (brass screen).
Moisture will be continually provided to
the interior of the cage by means of a 10
X 75 mm cotton roll (dental wad) (CR),
the top of which will protrude into the
cage through a hole in the cage and the
bottom of which should be set in a 45 X
85 mm glass jar filled with water (JW) .
The top of a 25 X 95 mm shell vial (V)
will also protrude through a hole in the
cage.
The bottom of the vial is set in a 45 X 85
mm jar which supported the cage

Mating cages
Test tube vials 180 mm long and 15 mm in diameter closed
with a moist cotton plug in fine nylon mesh. Moistened filter
paper will cover the base topped with slanting dry rice straw
to serve as refuge for the spiders as well support while
mating
Insect Cages
Wooden angle framework
supported on wooden batons. Fine
mesh provided on sides and top.
Size 15 x 15 x 15 cm

ANOVA (Fecundity, Hatching Success, Size of Offspring,

Food Consumption)

Student-Newman-Keuls multiple range test

Survival of Females

Nonparametric analysis
