FROM THE EDITOR

In this issue, Solenn wants to

make one thing clear: She got
married. So what?!
After you take in her stunning photos, grateful that it happened when she
said it wouldnt ever again because she was done with magazines of our kind,
move on over to her profile and read about what compelled her to take back her
words and do FHM for a second time, and in more tempting fashion. It tells
you exactly the kind of stuff Solenn is made of.
She said she was getting all these questions and remarks to the effect that
now shes married, her life as a celebrity must be over. It pissed her off and
so, to make people shut up, she wanted to say no, Im not over, with this: A
provocative cover and 26 pages inside only for Solenn, where she absolutely
outdoes herself. Damn right shes not over.
Its the rebel in her at work.
Its also probably the rebel in Ely Buendia thats working to make his new
venture happen, Offshore records (The Man With the Plan to Save our Music,
p. 64). So now hes not only a musician but a record label co-founder as well.
Knowing full well that this is the business side of his industry and he works
best on the creative side, he is candid enough to admit that Offshore could be a
recipe for disaster. But hes doing it anyway.
From Offshore we expect vinyl albums to come outI know I need a real
album whose jacket or sleeve I can touch and hold and look at while I listen
to the stuff in it. Also, its not retro; its because the best-sounding music isnt
compressed in files, its pressed on good old resin. That is why vinyl is making
a comeback. Ely himself will tell you that.
From Solenn and Ely we learn a very important lesson: If everyone says you
cant do it, do it. Shut them up.

REACTIONS

ANG MAMATAY NANG

DAHIL SA YO

I have a suggestion as to how you can make

Jessy Mendiolas coronation as FHMs
Sexiest for 2016 a bit more memorable: have
her wear only a barong! Since the definition
of sexy is changing beyond the physical,
why dont we introduce a more nationalistic
spin on things? More power to FHM , Jessy,
Duterte, and the whole Philippines!
Joshua Daluz, via Facebook

of convincing and execution, right? Marketing

strategy, right change is coming, right?
History in the making, right? Please think
about it. Its a very wise business decision!

FROM COVER TO COVER

Jennylyn Mercado deserves to win this year

because [of] all her achievements in movies
and magazine covers! Hope there will be a
back-to-back sexiest title for her. I just love
her that much. I love her freakin hot sexy
figure and her amazing personality.
JP Tan Tolentino, via Facebook

I'm a huge fan of Rhian Ramos and we were

quite disappointed with her ranks in the 100
Sexiest for the previous years. But we never
gave up because she deserves to be on
top. Weve been clamoring for her to grace
your cover and she finally did it and it was
beautiful. What really astonished me more
was when I found out that you had Mark
Nicdao as the photographer and that it was
shot it in France! This is surely FHM at its
best. Congratulations, this is one of the best
covers you've given us.

THE MOST EXPLOSIVE

ISSUE EVER

SLIGHTLY OFF COURSE ,

CAPTAIN

JUST POINTING IT OUT

This is some unsolicited advice from a

die-hard fan of Jadine. If you really want
an explosive issue for your magazine, try to
convince Nadine Lustre to pose for you and
include her protective, gorgeous, and very
sexy BF, James Reid in the cover. So kahit
naka two-piece si Nadine, James will just
cover what needs to be covered. That will be
a sold-out issue for sure! It's [just] a matter

Im writing in reaction to the Star Trek article

in your July issue where you showcased a
variety of Federation starships featured in the
franchise, you identified the USS Enterprise
NCC-1701-Aas the one featured in the
1960s TV series and Star Trek IIV; and the
NCC-1701-D as being featured in Star Trek V:
The Final Frontier and VI: The Undiscovered
Country and in the movies First Contact,

Insurrection, and Nemesis.

Id like to respectfully point out that the first
iteration of the USS Enterprise was as NCC1701. This was used in the original series
and used in the first three movies. This ship
was blown up at the end of Star Trek III: The
Search for Spock . This Klingon ship was
the same ship they used in Star Trek IV: The
Voyage Home.
For the next two movies (V and VI), the crew
used a newly built Enterprise NCC-1701-A. At
the end of Star Trek VI, they received an order
to go back to port where the NCC-1701-A
would be decommissioned. As for NCC1701-D, it was destroyed in the 1995 movie
Generations. A new Enterprise (presumably
NCC-1701-E) would be used in the next
three movies: First Contact, Insurrection and
Nemesis.
According to a technical manual, in between
NCC-1701-A and NCC-1701-D, there would be
two iterations, NCC-1701-B and NCC-1701-C,
which had a different crew. Who knows? These
two versions could be the subject of future
series or movies. Thanks for listening!

Kahit maaaring
masabi na mas
mapangahas

Florentino T. Collantes.

Mas pinapahalagahan
ng Balagtasan ang
sukat at tugma ng
mga linya kaysa sa
battle rap dahil ito at ang tono
ng boses ang nagdadala sa
bawat linya. Datapwat sa battle
rap, may elemento pa ito ng
flow o ang ritmo ng bawat
linya na maaaring pabagu-bago
sa haba at bilis ng pagbigkas.

Halatang mas
pormal ang
tanghalan ng
Balagtasan
kaysa sa battle rap. Kung
ihahambing mo naman ang
barong ng mga makata
sa mga nagsisilakihang
T-shirt ng mga emcee sa
battle rap, wala naman yata
roong contest. Ngunit hindi
natin kayang husgahan ang
pagkalehitimo ng dalawang
sining base lang doon dahil
magkaiba talaga sila ng
estetika.

Ginanap ang pinakaunang debateng

Balagtasan sa isang pulong ng
Kapulungang Balagtas (Balagtas

ABOUT

WO MEN

According to Sarsa Kitchen+Bars

owner and chef JP Anglo, its
easier to have one thing lead to
another if you begin with a sensually
sumptuous meal. The right menu
could mean a sizzling time in the
bedroom. Here, the Ilonggo chef
correlates food to great sex, giving
tips on how to score some pogi
points with the right ingredients and
a great technique. Boys, take notes!
Use food to score. Lutuan mo lang
and everything will follow. Kapag
nagluluto ka sa bahay, home court
mo yan. Everything is under one roof:
may kusina, couch, kama. So pwede
kayo kumain, pwede kayo mag-chill,
pwede kayo magpahinga. It starts
in the kitchen. And if you do well,
[you] will end up in the living room or
somewhere else.
Trust in your talent to get the
girlsbut dont try too hard. When
you try too hard, it actually works
against you. These days, I cook at the
beach because I surf a lot. Ang mga
siga sa tubig are the locals and the
pro surfers. They get all the girlsthe
chikababes in their T-back bikinis. Eh
ako, hindi naman magaling mag-surf.
So I wait in the sidelines and think,
Tikman niyo muna ang pagkain ko;
baka magbago isip niyo.
Cooking together may lead to
MOMOL. Pero para sa akin, hindi
instantslow cooking yan, eh. I would
recommend cooking beef stew.

Tumatawa kayo, have a conversation,

Girls with big appetites are a
turn-on. I once dated a model.
Maganda, matalino. I bring her to
Sarsa, and she tells me that she is a
pescatarian, meaning she only eats
fish and vegetables. Eh puro pork
ang niluluto ko. So, needless to say,
there was no second date.
Aphrodisiacs are real. Its about
conditioning the mind. Oysters have
this silky smooth texture, reflective of
our body organs, or to be direct about
it, the vagina. It is salty, although
there are sweet oysters from France.
Caviar is the same in texture and
taste. A banana [is an aphrodisiac,
too.] When a girl eats a banana, she
becomes playful.
The best place to do it: solid
tops. Use a firm countertopor
look for a table with strong legs. A
wooden table will give you that earthy
feel while marble and granite give a
feeling of luxury.
Alcohol releases inhibitions.
Alcohol can break down barriers,
even underwear. I would recommend
cocktails because you get to
appreciate different flavors. Even a
good scotch has all those flavors and
notes, if you know how to drink it.

or how to hook up with a hot celeb
Rachel Morada, 23

he asked me on one of those occasions.

Arent you supposed to be dating that girl?
He rolled his eyes. Thats all an illusion.
But shes so hot!
But we dont talk! he retorted. Id rather have someone I can talk to.
Wait, are you saying Im not hot?
Im saying have dinner with me.

Just got home from the gym.

Still thinking about that.
Taguig
12:30 a.m.

Step 1: Ignore him.

My gym buddy, Aaron, invited me for birthday drinks at a gastropub. His
best friend, Damiena rising artistawas there to celebrate with him,
surrounded by girls. He was definitely hot, but I dont have a thing for
high-profile guys. He was also dating his co-star. So, I was happy just to
sit there, enjoying my beer.
Soon, Aaron and Damien were pouring shots for everybody. They
approached our table just as I was checking my phone. Next thing I knew,
Damien was seated beside me. Busy ah, he said.
Oh, hi, I said, startled. I raised my beer to Aaron. Happy birthday,
babe!
Thanks, babe! Damien, this is Rachel. Shes my gym bae, said Aaron.
So who are you texting? teased Damien, pretending to sneak a peek
at my phone.
Nobody important, I replied.
Seemed important enough to ignore my boys birthday shots, he
challenged.
Sorry na, I said, taking the shot glass he held in front of me.
He chatted me up and, a few minutes into the conversation, said,
Hey, a bunch of us are heading to my house in Tagaytay in the morning.
Join us.
I laughed. Um, no.
Aaron, who was within ear shot,
exclaimed, Grabe, pare, hinihindian ka na
ngayon!
Damien looked unsure how to proceed.
Itll be fun! he said.
I have to work.
Its Saturday! he said incredulously.
Yeah. I work weekends sometimes.
Ditch it, he said, giving me a sexyas-hell grin. Ugh. So much for not being
attracted to him.
Tell you what, I said. If you can tell me
my name, sasama ako.
Silence. Aaron let out a guffaw.
And with that, Im out, I said, standing
up. Enjoy your birthday, babe. And I
walked out of the pub.

www.fhm.com.ph

Step 4: Give in.

My dilemma: Did I want the distinction of being The Girl Who Said No
To Damien? Or did I want to experience sleeping with one of the hottest
people alive? In the end, my baser instincts won.
He called on a Saturday and again asked me to go to Tagaytay with
him. I asked him who else was coming. Just me, he replied.
I was quiet for a few seconds before saying, Okay.
He picked me up in an hour. On the drive to Tagaytay, I could feel the
nervousness and excitement in the air. He barely spoke, but as soon as
we got to his empty house, he shut the front door and pinned me against
it, his tongue urgently finding mine. My fingers became entangled in his
hair as he worked his way down, hitching up my dress and pulling off my
panties. As he put a finger inside me, he smiled.
You are so fucking wet, he said.
Its been too fucking long, I said.
He undid his pants and whipped out
his rock-hard dick, which was just as
perfect as the rest of his body. He picked
me up and rammed into me, fucking me
hungrily, furiously against the door. When
he was done, he set my feet back down on
the floor, burying his face in my neck and
breathing heavily. Release.
Whats my name? I teased. He
laughed before picking me up and carrying
me to the sofa. This time he peeled off
all my clothes, and all of his, and I got a
front-row seat to his million-dollar abs. The
second time was slower, more sensual,
the sense of urgency and the weeks-long
sexual tension finally relieved. We explored
each others bodies all weekend, fucking
in every room of his vacation house. I
worshipped his impossibly perfect manhood
with my mouth, practically sucking him dry.
I lost count of how many times we had sex
over the span of two days.
ILLUSTRATION borG SibaNaN

Step 2: Make him work for it.

Come na.
A message from an unknown number.
He got my number from Aaron, I guessed.
Im assuming this is the superstar, I
texted back. Then my phone rang.
Youre still up, he said. Rachel,
he added pointedly. And that began an
hour-long conversation. I still didnt go to
Tagaytay, but he called me when he got
back. Over the next few weeks, he would
call and text, always asking me out. But
I only agreed to meet up when it was a
group thing.
Why wont you have dinner with me?

Step 3: Get your head together.

So I did. I even let him kiss me at the end of it. And that just left him
wanting more.
A big reason I held off was I was trying to figure out what his deal was.
He could have pretty much anyonewhy me? Was he really that starved
for good conversation? Did he really see himself with me? I didnt delude
myself. Deep down, I knew he was in it for the chase. I knew the minute
I gave in, it would be over. I guess I wanted the ego boost to last a little
longer.

facebook.com/FHM.ph

twitter.com/fhmphil

fhmphilofficial

Step 5: Move on.

I knew things would change after that. He
would still text me every few days, which
turned into every few weeks, which dwindled
into nothing. I was a little sad when it was
over, missing the attention, but I went into it
with eyes wide open. To paraphrase a pop
song: No regrets, just lust.

Giannina loves theatre.
If you want to take away
something from this piece about her,
thats it. In an age where the term
work-life balance seems like an
oxymoron, theres just something so refreshing
about working with someone who just genuinely
loves what she doesits infectious.
I got into theater after I had just quit my
corporate job [management trainee, Unilever],
so it was really about doing something out of the
box, about doing things that I knew I loved but
never had the chance to do. It just so happened
that I got bitten by the theater bug pretty hard,"
says Giannina.
Ever since Giannina finished her adult acting
workshop with Repertory Philippines shes been
taking up roles left and right and has made quite
a name for herself in the musical comedy scene.
I started late [in theatre]. Ive only been acting
for about six years. I still have so much to learn.
In those six years, she has taken up
primarily comedic roles in plays like Repertory

the hIgh,
that's what I get from the

we wanted her to portray during the shoot made

us so, for the lack of a better term, kilig.
Kilig at the fact that she was kilig. One of
Giannina's many talents is making her audience
feel what she's feeling. Theater is a twoway relationship between the actors and the
audience. The energy that the actors get from
the audience is so palpable, it's like drugs. Ive
never done drugs, but everything they say about
it, the high, thats what I get from the theater,
Giannina explains. And it felt like we were
watching her show.
Even though Giannina gets complimented
for being a natural actress, she believes that
acting is just like any [other] skillthe more you
practice, the more you do your research, the
more you observe and understand the character
and situation, the better you become. I think
you kill the comedy if you try to be funny. The
comedians are the ones who are so comfortable
at laughing at themselves. You have to find
humor in everyday life, in everything.
So how close is the actual Giannina to
the characters she portrays? I find myself in
situations and emotions that the character feels,
that way I can act more genuinely, which I think
is a very important part of the storytelling were
doing. I think thats the part of Giannina thats in
all of my characters.
Everyone has a chance to touch people
in ways that could make them think and act
differently. Giannina is an actress but she
doesnt need a stage to make people feel her
passion, and as cheesy as it sounds, neither do
you. Every day we get the chance to show other
people different perspectives of the world by
putting enough of ourselves in things we are
passionate about. Im just so blessed that Im
able to do what I love. How many people can say
that about their profession? says Giannina.
Too few, Giannina. Too few. FH M

to make her laugh. It was pretty obvious during

our shoot when shed suddenly laugh whenever
the atmosphere would get a bit too serious. I
laugh very easily and Id like to think that Im
pretty good at making other people laugh. I find
humor in a character Im portraying and in the
situations the characters are put in. Rightly or
wrongly, that's maybe the first thing I notice in
the characters I play or the scripts I read, says
Giannina.
Gianninas main concern when acting is that
she should be able to convey the feelings of
her character in a genuine way, which makes
her want to try participating in more straight
plays and dramas. Its sometimes hard to fully
empathize with the feelings of your characters in
comedies since their emotions change abruptly
as each scene dictates. The dramatic scenes
can only last so long until you need some humor
to lighten up the atmosphere. Out of all the
plays Ive been in, Red Turnips Time Stands Still
really affected me the most. It was so beautifully
written, and I empathized with my character so
much, recalls Giannina.

All the attention for DCs

Suicide Squad movie
seems to be on Australian
actress Margot Robbies
Harley Quinn, the semipsychotic (and hot as hell)
ex-psychiatrist-turnedsidekick to the maniacal
Joker. Being cast alongside
industry heavyweights like
Will Smith, supermodel Cara
Delevingne, and the alwaysintriguing Jared Leto as one
of the members of a ragtag
troop of villains corralled by
the government to execute
possibly fatal missions can
easily dampen any ingnues
shot at standing out. Not for
Robbie. Not for Harley Quinn,
whose own solo film outing
is already in the works, where
the actress herself is serving
as an executive producer.
After breaking into the
scene as one of Martin
Scorseses infamous blondes
in 2013s The Wolf of Wall
Street opposite Leonardo
DiCaprio, Robbie quickly
ascended into the top tier of
Hollywood. Her stone cold
beauty and icy demeanor
are reminiscent of Sharon
Stone and Cathy Moriarty in
their heyday (both Scorsese
blondes themselves). Shes
played Jane in The Legend
of Tarzan, lent her talents
to thrillers like the con flick
Focus and comedies like Tina
Feys Whiskey Tango Foxtrot,
and done her fair
share of indie
productions. But
its putting on
the punk rock
clown getup of
Harley Quinn
thats going to
seal her fate as
an icon for both

moviegoers and comic book

geek-boys the world over.
Harley Quinn is following
in the footsteps of Wonder
Woman (Gal Gadot), another
DC heroine whos getting her
own movie. But Harley is the
antithesis of Diana Prince,
a composed goddess with
super strength and divine
powerseasy to love for the
deity she is. Harley Quinn,
on the other hand, is crazy,
unpredictable, mortal, and
above all else, criminal. She
embodies societys fear of
the untamed womansmart
but on the verge, cute and
dangerous all at once. Like
the masks of Greek theater
her face paint alludes to,
she is the epitome of both
comedy and tragedy. She is
complex.
In that sense, the
character is trailblazing
and redefining the mold
of the superhero (or is it
supervillainess?) movie.
Gone are the days when
all-American aliens like
Superman ruled the box
office, or only brooding males
haunted by parental issues
like Bruce Wayne got to play
the vigilante and save the day.
The zeitgeist demands that
powerful women, whether
theyre perfect, damaged, or
everything in between, get a
piece of the action, too.
When it comes to
representing the
modern day antiheroine, Harley
Quinn doesnt
clown around, and
as shell prove
to her legions of
adoring fans, this
is no laughing
matter.

in one hand, and a to-go cup in

the other. The way we consume
news had evolved, but what we
consume is still edited.
That is precisely why the
addition of Facebook live into
our feeds is akin to cutting the
middleman out and getting a
better deal. The raw deal.
Take Diamond Reynolds, a

facebook.com/FHM.ph

woman who took to Facebook

after her boyfriend, philando
Castile, was shot by a Minnesota
cop four times. Most people
would only grab their phones
to call for help, but when the
supposed help is the one
endangering your lives, things
get desperate. Reynolds started
broadcasting the encounter on

twitter.com/fhmphil

fhmphilofficial

Facebook live, showing a bloody

Castile holding on to life as the
cop kept aiming the gun.
The tumult in the uS
surrounding police brutality
against black people had been
up that week, with the shooting
of Alton Sterling just the day
before, which again was captured
on video, albeit not streamed live.
The following day, snipers raided
a peaceful protest in Dallas that
addressed the recent string of
murders. Five Dallas cops were
killed as well as a protester. This
time, Michael Kevin Bautista livestreamed the shootout between
police and snipers.
When media such as
periscope and Facebook live
came in, most of us thought
that their practical use was for
catching live content on the go.
pres. Dutertes first SOnA was
streamed live by multiple media
sources last month, eliminating
the need to scramble and run
to a television screen. people
who usually couldnt get involved
due to restrictions of office and
commute hours are given the
benefit of live programming.
Facebook has acknowledged
that their live service could be
a powerful tool in a crisis. in
Reynolds case, she stated that
she wanted to get the truth out
so the world could witness. She
spoke to an audience of you and
me through the screens of our
phones.

SPECIAL THANKS TO MR. LEO DOMINGUEZ AND MS. REENA DIMACULANGAN OF LVD MANAGEMENT

Solenn Heussaff-Bolzico (better known as Sos to her BFFs)

did not invite us to her wedding. The ceremony happened
in Brittany, northwest of France, in a castle where
oysters and langoustines and rich pastries we can barely
pronounce were served to the 167 guests in attendance.
Thats okay.
We wouldnt have known how to conduct
ourselves properly anyway. Were just glad
that post-nuptials, Solenn was cordial enough
to surprise us with a sophomore cover
appearance that feels more like our own
personal honeymoon than anything else.
I hate the term wife, she says.
Truthfully, I think it sounds a bit old.
If we were being honest ourselves, we
hate that title, too, only because were not the
ones going home to Solenn after a stressful
workday, she preparing a hot meal to stave
away the anxieties of an awful day at the
office. Oh, to dream.
But Solenns reasons for disliking the
traditional concept of what it means to be a
wife are not superficial or self-serving, but
rather, rooted in a passion to break free of the
limiting parameters that societal stereotypes
impose on a woman.
I think some people perceive marriage
as something that will lock you down, she
explains. They think that once they tie the

www.fhm.com.ph

facebook.com/FHM.ph

knot, thats it. They cant do this. They cant do

that. For me, thats the most annoying thing.
When people interview me now, they often ask,
Ngayong nagpakasal ka na, titigil ka na ba sa
trabaho? Marriage is not supposed to be the
end of your life. Marriage is not supposed to be
suicide. People need to know thatif they do
get married, you and your spouse still need to
respect each others own lives.
Solenn, without a doubt, loves her husband
(damn you, Nico!). But everyonethe man
she vowed to spend the rest of her life with
includedshould be aware that she is quite
the creative force not to be reined in. Not only
is she a popular actress, but shes also a model,
endorser, singer, painter, makeup artist, and
author. Wife is actually the least interesting
aspect on her long list of life achievements.
I consider myself as more of an artist,
she says. My brain is scattered everywhere
and I get bored really, really fast, which is why
I always need to do something new. Im always
constantly searching for the next thing.
Even when I paint, Ill paint every day for six
months straight, then Ill stop for a year and
a half because Ive lost interest, before getting
back into it sometime in the future. But of
course, when I stop, I need to find something
else to do. If not, Id just be at home reading
my books, feeling like I could be doing so
much more with my life. Thats why I need to
keep myself busy.
Among the projects currently taking up
lease in her already-hectic schedule is GMAs
fantaserye, Encantadia, a television show
thats being dubbed as the years most-awaited
remake. In it, she plays Cassiopeia, the first
queen of Lireo, a role she inherits from former
FHM covergirl and one-time Sexiest in the
Land winner Cindy Kurleto.
Solenn admits that high fantasy isnt a
genre she is all too familiar with, and even
feels the pressures of having to speak both
Tagalog and Enchanta, the made-up language
created for and spoken by the characters of the
famous series.
At first, when they told me that there was
a possibility that Id be playing a part in the
remake of Encantadia, I started freaking out,
Solenn remembers. I did a fantaserye before
called Indio and my lines were so malalim!
When I started doing my research for the
role, I saw that Cindy Kurleto played the role
before, who like me, baluktot yung dila to
death! I told myself, kung kaya niya, kaya
ko rin! And when I saw the script, she didnt
have a lot of lines because the character uses
telepathy. I told myself, This is definitely my
role! Ha ha!

Part of Solenns undying charm is in her

rock and roll demeanor.

POPO GO DRESS SHEER LACE GOWN

She has that certain je ne sais quoi that

they say French women seem to possess in
charming amountsa simultaneously strong
and sensual self-awareness that is dangerously
seductive and appealing to the masses.
And yet, despite her indubitable confidence,
Solenn is keen to recognize her shortcomings
and weaknesses. Once shes locked them down,
she puts in the blood, sweat, and tears needed
to improve on them. This allows her to grab
opportunities as they come, have fun, and just
run with ita philosophy that is carried over
to her professional career, apparent in the
manner in which she elucidates both the joys
(and pains) of the fantaserye grind.
It was amazing seeing everyones tweets
about how excited they were to see Encantadia
coming back, she says. But I also felt a lot
of pressure because I wanted to give the role
the justice it deserves. Its a big challenge for
someone like me because theres a big cast. If I
mess up my lines, Im not just in front of one
person, its an entire village of people.
But then I never get bored [on the set of
Encantadia]. I studied fashion design so I love
that everyone is in costume. You really feel
and get into character because its like youre
in a different world, and when paired with
the amazing sets, its like youre in a dream. I
love the whole thing. They wanted to level up,
so there are a lot of fight scenes as well. Its
very action-packed. Right now, I really dont
know what people are expecting of me. Im just

doing what I feel is right for the character.

Feeling right is a principle she lives by.
So much so that shes actually written a book
about it titled Hot Sos, her solo as an author,
which will hit the newsstands and bookstores
this month. In it, shes taken it upon herself
to share her fitness journey with her legions
of adoring fans. And just by looking at this
fantastical spread of photos you have in
your hands, hers is a voice (and a body) that
commands authority on the subject matter.
But, as with any self-respecting author
of a fitness and wellness book, she made it
a point to edit the tips and tricks she doles
out so that her potential readers would not
think them unattainable. Hot Sos can be best
described as a tome of Solenns workouts,
recipes, and overall lifestylea sneak peek
into her world that your sister, girlfriend,
or wife would want on their coffee tables as
a quick reference before hitting the gym or
whipping up a meal.
Ive been on this fitness journey for a while
now. But Im not an obsessive-compulsive
fitness freak, Solenn assures. I eat my fair
share of lechon and I go out drinking once in a
while. Im not the type who
just eats kamote and tuna.
I want to teach people how
to enter this lifestyle and
not be pressured to look a
certain way. The book aims
to make people feel good,
because I really noticed a
change in the way I am as
a person when I started
feeling good about myself.
Its about attaining
that healthy lifestyle, while
still knowing how to have
fun. So this book contains
a little bit of everything. It
also has photos of me from
the past, because people
might say it was easy for
me to achieve this lifestyle
because I had the means. I
want to show people that
Im just like everyone else

Hit television show: sitcom show, travel show,

reality show: check. Solo book outing: check.
A husband who, we must reluctantly admit,
seems like a pretty cool dude: check.
But why is she gracing the pages of FHM
again after five long years? Its a legitimate
query, considering she was once quoted in
mainstream media saying she would never
pose for a mens magazine ever again.
Dont get us wrong, gents. Were not
complaining. Were all hands on deck any time
a fine specimen of a woman such as Solenn
is willing to express her creativity in such a
scintillating manner. Yet, in true Solenn form,
she provides us with an answer that isnt only
eloquent and intelligent, but also hinged on
shattering a celebrity myth.
No offense to the FHM team, but I said
I would never do a sexy magazine again,
especially if it was for a magazine whose
main readers are men. Theres just always
a different connotation when its a mens
magazine. Its not that I dont like the
magazine, but I only said those things because
I felt Ive done it once and Im okay with that.
I never said I would stop sexy shoots because I
love doing them.
But the minute I got engaged, people
started asking me all these ridiculous
questions, Are things going to change now
that youre married? Are you going to ditch
your career? I felt that all they were doing
was associating me with the fact that I was

married. Its just a status thats part of my

personal life and it doesnt need to be the main
point of discussion. So I decided to break away
from how people perceived me by just doing
it! I told myself that Ill do another FHM cover
shoot tapos itotodo ko so they can just effin
shhussshh, she laughs.
So consider this Solenn raising her middle
finger to those pigeonholing her into a certain
mold. And boy, what a point she makes. All
this, however, isnt done in a gesture of spite,
but more in an effort to tweak the way women
are recognized in an industry where theres
a possibility that success and choices are
compromised by personal relationships.
I feel that in Asian countries, when a
woman in show business gets hitched, the
publics perception of her changes. Its not that
you want it to change or welcome that change
when youre settledit just happens.
For example, since shes gotten married, it
would be strange to have her in a love team.
Some followers here, if someone in the pairing
has a real-life boyfriend or girlfriend, husband
or wife, magagalit sila. Acting is a fantasy
world, and youre supposed to be able to
explore as many characters as possible. I just
want to break the stereotype
that, once youve tied the
knot, you cant host this
show or do a certain project.
Marriage shouldnt be a
burden in your life. It should
be something thats personal,
spiritual, and legal. Im
lucky that Ive found a
good partner. Were both
very open-minded people.
You know, women can be
powerful, and have been
powerful and successful in
the past, and it shouldnt
change when you settle
down. All women should
know that.
We couldnt agree more.
In fact, Solenn, were more
than happy to help you get

DO WE WANT MORE?
Ely Buendia eggs the
crowd after Apartel, the
two-month-old band that
he co-fronts with another
music veteran, Jay Ortega,
finished its scheduled
one-song encore. Do we
want more?! He repeats,
clearly feeling good.When
he heard the response he
was looking for, the band
launched into the nights
second encore, which
included a fun rendition of
Michael Jacksons Rock
With You. The usually
stoic, poker-faced front man
even did a mean moonwalk
to introduce the song.
As it would turn out,
Ely Buendia and company
wanted so much more. That
Saturday night, Apartel
performed not just two,
but three encores. And by
the way, the gig we are
referring to, the one at Craft
Rockn Grill at The Fort
Strip in Bonifacio Global
City, is the third party the
soul band has thrown to
launch its debut single
and just its single Is
it Hip? That night, Ely
was especially having fun.
He danced, belted out his
famous falsetto, danced,
interacted with the crowd,
and danced, bringing out
the kind of energy people
dont particularly attach to
his name.
Just to underscore Elys
current wave of creativity:
Apartel comes after The
Oktaveswhich is, by
the way, still very much
active in the scene, as his
other band Pupil. Pupil,
in case youve forgotten,
is the second incarnation
of The Mongols, the
band that spearheaded
his comeback after the
abrupt disbanding of The
Eraserheads. But thats not
all. Ely, as we all know, has
also started dabbling in
record production. He was
at the helm of The Cheats
debut outing, as well as
the upcoming album of
rockabilly outfit Hilera.
But here is the kicker:
Ely is now also a record
label owner. Well, a record
label co-owner. As they
were forming Apartel, Ely
and Jay got to numerous

66 FH M AUGUST 2016

conversations over beer. And as in most talk saddled with inebriation, it birthed something else
and something new entirely. Enter Offshore, the aforementioned record label that Ely co-owns
with Jay (plus four other partners). We told you the guy is insatiable.

ONE A GRAY AFTERNOON IN JULY, FHM

visited Ely Buendia at The Bunker, his homecum-studio in Paraaque that security guards
of the gated subdivision like to describe as parang barko. Its Brutalist and angular exterior
will (1) inform the regular passerby that its homeowner is special and certainly creative, and; (2)
validate those in the know that Ely is a man of style.
Its not just how he looks doing all the things he does, but how he does all the things he does.
Out on the third floor roof deck, a barefooted Ely sits on a lawn chair, relaxed and comfortable.
He looks like a well-off slacker, with nothing to do but contemplate the world around him. But we
couldnt be farther from the truth, because Ely Buendia is swimming in projects. At the moment,
hes telling us about how he got himself into Offshore.
I think every artist or musician has harbored ambitions on having his or her own label.
Marami naman who have already done that, and the reason why I havent gotten around to doing
it, is, yun nga. It takes too much work, I guess, he laughs. Its the same with forming a soul
band. It takes a lot of work. So it helps that theres someone helping you out.
And that someone is Jay Ortega, singer for Gnash, a businessman and audiophile. They were
at Spin Caf in BF Homeswhich Jay incidentally ownstalking shop, once again, when the idea
for a record label was floated. At this point, Apartel was already in place, We needed a place to
put the band in. [So we were like] How about we put up our own label? It didnt occur to them
to sign with any of the current existing labels because we can
do everything ourselves now. Medyo control freaks din kami, so
might as well [put up our own].
OFFS HOR E I S A
The way Ely describes Offshore music, however, is anything
but controlled. To be honest, it sounds like a lax and relaxed
B E S POKE R ECOR D
and mighty flexible yogi. We dont even know if we want to

sign a contract with anyone, he admits. They envision Offshore

like Grade A baloney, but

theres more where Ely is
coming from. We want
to be a label thats handson, he continues. Were
producers in our own
right, we are musicians, so
we want Offshore to be a
collaboration between [us]
the label and the band or the
artist.
Ely knows all too well
that bands and/or artists
already at least have an idea
or a vision when they come
into a recording studio.
And ako naman, ang gusto
ko lang is whatever they
want to put on record, I
will help them do it. Im
not really the type of guy
who has a clear vision. My
vision, as a producer, is to
make the best sounding
album [for the artist].
He clarifies that the
idea of a record label is
Jays. Its good that he
had imagined all this in
his head, Ely says. When
the idea was brought up,
Ely jumped on board and
started pitching to Jay his
ideas on the kind of label
I wanted to put up. And
thus, Offshore was born.
Theyre six partners in all,
with each of the partners
bringing something
essential to the table. Jay
and I, were like the A&R
[artist and repertoire]
guys, the producers. And
then we have a partner
who is in charge of legal,
another who is in charge
of merchandise, and so on.
So yeah, I think were good
to go.
The plan is that Offshore
music must come up with a
really good product and
by a really good product,

and force you to do three,
four albums, Ely says,
pointing out the common
and age-old business practice of record labels getting artists to sign things like a three-album
contract. He continues: We really just want to concentrate on one good product. Artists wont
be encumbered by the contract that they will have to fulfill, and the same thing with us. He
says this is exactly what theyre planning to do with Apartel, the first artist in Offshores roster.
We dont even know if we want to do another album. We might, we might not. But when we
considered this project, ito na yun. In terms we can all relate, Offshore operates a lot like an
open relationship. Its on a-per-project basis. If, at any time before, during, or after the project,
the artist wants to sign and/or work with another label, its all cool. If they want to do an album
with somebody else, fine, Ely says coolly.
He calls it, a sort of handshake type of deal. And then he considers: Siguro recipe for
disaster ito.

IN THE HIGHLY
FLEXIBLE SETUP OF
OFFSHORE,

Ely and Jay look to a few

unwritten guidelines for
their new roles as the labels
A&R guys and producers.
As a bespoke record label,
they dont plan on having
a long roster of artists,
emphasizing that theyd
much rather be about
quality over quantity.
Ely adds: And we dont
approach the artists. The
artists approach us. While
that may make him sound
like the biggest snob, it
is worth noting that its a
philosophy that puts the
artist front and center, a
philosophy guided most
specially by Elys vast
experience as an artist.
Artists dont come in
not knowing what to do,
he says. We want to give
them the benefit of the
doubt that they already
know what they are doing.
My responsibility as a
producer is to make sure
that it happens. Now, if they
need something from me,
if they need my opinion for
instance, then I will give it.
But first and foremost, its
the artist.
It's also about creating
the right environment for
them, something he picked
up from Robin Rivera,
producer extraordinaire
of all Eraserheads albums.
[Robin] really set the stage
for us to play around in the
studio and we got really
comfortable with him. So its
really all about creating the
right environment.
But the most important
and admirable of Offshores
objectives? To return the
lost value of recorded music.
We want every project to
be special talaga, Ely says,
adding that they will be
pulling out all the stops for
every release. For the labels
debut project with Apartel,
he points to Radioheads
game-changing bold move
in 2007. The British band
released In Rainbows
primarily in vinyl, with
the MP3 and CD formats
standing only as an add-on

to the vinyl product. In the

similar way that Radiohead
sort of forced their audience
to rethink the value of music
for them, we kind of want to
do that too, [especially] with
the Apartel release.

are long and doing it on

But while the band will

decade-long and still-ongoing

Na-devalue ang music. I

Ely acknowledges that its

time to find some good lighting
goes a long way. Ejay Leung,
professional photographer
says, Natural light works best
to give her skin a softer look.
Okay, we might be cheating a
tiny bit, but at least she wont
look like a hungover Sadako
reject.
The Bad We must reiterate:
stop her from taking selfies the
second she wakes up because
99 percent of the time, shell
regret it anyway. Bad angles +
bad lighting = bad picture. There
is no reason to take this selfie
unless shes checking for bats
inside the cave.

Mirror selfie

Oh Snap!
The Good: Our generations interest
summed up into a handy little app. Its fun,
quick, and easy. Therefore, the picture
produced should not be overcomplicated
(its not rocket science). Tell your girl to just
have fun with it, and maybe even send you
a naughty private snap your way so youll
finally have a reason to open the app.
The Bad: Your girl should keep away from
overly used filters. Even though theyre cute,
no one really wants to see a rainbow-puking
orgy. She doesnt really have to make herself
look weirder by contorting her face since
thats what the app is for. It would be pretty
sad if they mistook her face for a new filter.

The Good: People take mirror

selfies so they can get a better
and wider angle when they want
to show their whole body, says
Leung. Its one of the most honest
selfies a person can take since
most of the time, its taken from
a level angle, which lets other
people see how that person
would look like if they were
standing in front of them.
The Bad: Overcompensating in
selfies can really make a person
look desperate for attention. Hence
the birth of the ever cringe-worthy
duck face. Tell her to just act as
naturally as she can and people will
appreciate her baby-I-was-bornthis-way-outlook vibe.

The Groufie
The Good Most people
think that the only person
they have to be concerned
with is themselves. They
dont know that the people
theyre with also shows a lot
about who they are. Make
her friends look presentable,
too, by using a monopod
(selfie stick). This allows her
to angle the camera in a
way that everyone fits inside
the shot.
The Bad One of the most
important tips to consider
when taking groufies is to
make sure that everyone
is on the same page when
you take the selfie. This
is to lessen the chance of
people asking for retakes
Ang taba ko dyan!, Hindi
ako nakatingin, ano ba?!

Butt selfie
The Good Theres a reason why our photographers dont take
just cleavage shots all the time. Leung says, its important to try and
bring out the models assets, but thats mostly the photographers job.
Instead of overselling her features, she should just practice her facial
expressions to make them look more genuine in photos.
The Bad Remember: theres nothing slutty with showing a bit of
skin in photos. (See: If ya got it, flaunt it!) But theres a difference
between showing off what yo mama gave you and just being
downright KSP. Begging people for attention by posting pictures of
just her boobs just makes her look desperate. Believe us, our eyes will
naturally focus on your assets by themselves.

The Good Utilizing more
features of the camera/phone
is the key to taking really sexy
and really well-produced selfies.
You actually have a lot to work
with when you consider using
the different elements of your
environment; in this case, the
steam and misty glass to add to
the feel of the picture.
The Bad We cannot stress
this enough, please dont let
her ruin her camera by bringing
it inside the shower. Just tell
her to set the camera on a
sturdy surface and set its timer
so she doesnt have to actually
hold it. This allows her to pose
properly for that money shot.

THE EXP ERT

These sophisticated hotdogs came about because of an

abundance of scrap horse meat. It was a long winter in Europe,
and horses were dying, says Buck Pago, owner and sausagemaker at El Pago Sausages. So to make use of the meat, people
ground them up, nilagyan ng sodium nitrate para hindi halatang
double dead yung meat. Also, this was the time before refrigeration,
so preservatives were necessary.

Buck Pago,
the sausage
guru
When Buck got into
cooking shows in 2011,
he didn't just sit and
watch.
naisip ko, bakit
hindi ako gumawa ng
sarili kong sausages?
he says. pero hindi
ko naman alam kung
ano yung laman ng
hungarian sausages,
German sausages. So
gumawa ako ng sarili
ko from scratch, using
a manual grinder. Trial
and error yon. Basically,
I used science, common
sense, and cooking
books to learn.
Smoking and
grilling ang approach.
pero ang pag-grill
naman, palusot lang
yan ng mga mister para
makainom at makagawa
ng dIy projects.
el pago Sausages
opened a year ago in
new manila, Quezon
city with an advocacy:
We use all local
ingredients. not a bad
excuse at all for a BBQ.

El Pago Classic

El Pago Sausages, 56 Lantana cor. New York Sts. Cubao,

Quezon City. Open Tuesdays to Sundays, 4 PM 9 PM.

Pag meron kang maalat at

medyo spicy, para tumingkad
yung flavor, put acid. Doon
papasok yung pickles, says Buck,
who makes his own pickles, too.
To add sweetness, Buck tops
his sandwiches with caramelized
white onions.
Ketchup lovers have to make
an extra effort when eating at El
Pago, though. Kung mahilig ka
sa ketchup, says Buck, magdala
ka ng sarili mo.
El Pago offers four kinds
of preservative-free sausages:
original, garlic, chicken, and beefbacon-cheese. For variety, there
are also smoked pork belly and
pulled pork sandwiches.

Step four: Don t

Our bread is outsourced

to a bakery. I developed
the recipe and the baker
made some technical
changes to it, says Buck.
His sandwiches use the
basic pan de sal formula,
but elongated.

St ep f ive :
Store we l l

You want your meat to stay fresh

for long. Store your sausages
in vacuum packs, says Buck.
Without oxygen, there will be no
oxidation; no chance for bacteria
to live.
Freeze your sausages, too.
Wala kaming preservatives,
says Buck. Pero tatagal pa rin
yung sausages kung frozen.
Sabi ng FDA, after three months,
unti-unting mawawala na yung
lasa, magde-degrade na [yung
product]. Pero technically kung
frozen at vacuum packed, hindi
siya masisira.

St ep two: Know
what ta ste s good

Back to basics tayo: Paano sasarap yung

sausage mo, considering youre using scrap
meat? Buck asks. Syempre, gumamit ka
ng fresh na main cuts of meat.
He uses Boston butt cuts (pigs
shoulders) for his pork sausages. Thats
the tastiest cut of meat because its
well-exercised, says Buck. Because of
all the movement and exercise, theres
more oxygen in those muscles. The more
oxygen in there, the tastier it is.

We picked the brains of
some street vendors,
and after some

a peek into what they
do to make their food
so addicting. It turns
out that the secret is
not always in the sauce.

Tokneneng (chicken or
duck egg) and kwek kwek
(quail eggs) get their
unmistakable orange hue
from the food coloring
added to the breading.
This breading owes its
dose of extra spice to
Ginisa Mix. The dip has
vinegar as a base but
the addition of chopped
cucumber balances
the sour with a bit of
refreshing sweetness.
Then theres the chopped
onion and red chili, and salt
for added zing.

Savory
Goto

What makes goto just so

good? Aside from it being
served hot, like an internal
hug, it perfectly exemplifies
the very definition of slow
cooking. The ox tripe is
cooked in broth for hours
until it is soft and supple.
Plus, there are so many
condiments you can add:
toasted garlic, red chilies,
fried tofu, boiled chicken
egg, green onions, along
with additional meats like
ox brain, cow eye, cow
heart, and pork fat.

Juicy

Many people make the

mistake of frying chicken
skin directly without prior
preparation. The best way
to make sinful chicharon
out of chicken skin is
to, first, cook the skin
in boiling water. Once
cooked, you'll need to
dehydrate them in the
refrigerator overnight.
Deep fry the skins the
next day and you'll get
that perfect crunch that
only chicharon can give.

Sure, that sounds like
comfortable fun. But doing that
every long weekend might get a
tad routinary, yes? So heres our
challenge: pick a long weekend
six months from now and plan
an epic time. Do something
different, at least for the sake of
your coworkers who can recite
your vacation itinerary verbatim
every Monday morning (complete
with links to your corresponding
Instagram posts).
Heres what you can do:

Invest in a posh membersonly beach resort. Youll have

dibs in all the cool amenities the
resort has to offer. And you get
to have unique photos
on social media
because how many
of your friends
can actually
afford to buy a
membership at
a beach resort?
Try Kawayan
Cove on the
Batangas coast.
Its secluded
(perfect for some
night-time skinny
dipping with the ladies)
and has a view worth 500
likes. Its got an eternity pool, and,
among many other perks, youll be
served drinks at the beach if you
so desire.

Ditch the ro-ro and go out on

the sea in style. This is the plan:
every payday, squirrel away P500
toward your self-love fund. When
youve saved enough, pitch
in with your squad
to rent a boata
catamaran, if your
friends are rich,
or a speedboat,
if your friends
are not so
rich. Spend a
long weekend
lounging in that
most exquisite of
vessels, moving to
the next island when
you get sick of the view.
Forget domestic; do
international. If youre a frequent
flyer because of business trips,
patiently accumulate your miles
and one day, take your girl and fly

off into the sunset. Anywheres

good as long as youre together
(like Hallmark says). And if Lady
Luck smiles your way that day, you
might even get a free upgrade to
business class. We hear the mile
high club is recruiting.
Amp up the danger level of
your vacation. Bungee jumping
and sky diving are so 2000. Go
cliff-diving; eat something youve
never had and cant pronounce;
cross a glass bridge; hook up with
a stranger. Remember, though: be
adventurous, but not stupid.
Try total immersion. Go to
a place and live like the locals.
Forego the hotel; find a native
place to stay in. Have a local
show you around; youll see and
experience more than if you
stick to the tour bus. Eat their
food, party their way, and have a
morning-after where its totally
legit to wake up and have no idea
where you are.
Do a tour of the red light
district. Itll be like watching 5D
porndepending on the country
you choose to visit, that is. Keep
your hand on your wallet, rubber
in your pocket, and your corny
lines silent.

You probably first

saw SsangYong
vehicles on our roads
with the Musso, an
SUV, and the Rodius,
a van. They were gray market
cars that, though they had their
audience, didnt quite capture the
imagination of the general carbuying public because, well, they
looked a bit odd.
The Musso looked rugged,
like an SUV should, but having
known just now from the General
Information Office (the goog)
what musso means in Korean
rhinocerosin hindsight it might
have taken on too much of the
gruff of its namesake.

The Rodius (the first gen we saw,

at least) has had it much worse from
design critics, bluntly calling it ugly.
Seen from the side, it had a sloping
line from the roof down to the rear.
But then the roof really goes all the
way to the back, before dropping
down almost perpendicularly to
complete the vans form. Slapped
with windows curving down and
pointing up, it seemed like a visual
confusion of a box and a tail. It was
supposedly inspired by the design of
a yacht, which is a boat.
And this leads us to the Tivoli
crossover. Does it look odd? No. Is
it beautiful? Yes. For a while there,
did it look like the Range Rover
Evoque? Yes, almost.

www.fhm.com.ph

This is the new SsangYong,

and suddenly it doesnt seem
odd to get one now. They have
other new cars in their lineup,
but the Tivoli appears to be the
rock star. The bigger story is
that the Tivoli is the first product
after Indian carmaker Mahindra
acquired the Korean car brand.
Now, India is slowly gaining a
foothold on the global car market
as a maker of cheap cars, giving
you the valid next question: how
much is the Tivoli?
It starts at P785,000 for the
base manual transmission model
and tops out at P1,080,000 for
the all-in Sport R version.
Thats the price of a
subcompact on the low end, and
a sedan on the high end. but you
get a classy crossover across the
entire spectrum. That is not a bad
deal.
but does it drive cheap?
Amazingly, no. Man, does it drive
like you have money.
The unit we tested, an AWD
diesel, long body variant-Tivoli
XlVi had a Comfort-Normal-Sport
drive selection. Even on Comfort,
when the engine works for
economy and smooth and early
gear changes, it can accelerate
pretty fast. On Sport, the engine
gives back as much as you
demand from it, and in a snap.
Across all drive characteristics,
the steering feedback is so light
it can be too much fun.
Inside, the first thing you

will probably fuss over is the

touchscreen on the dash.
In brochures, its a 7-inch
touchscreen DVD/MP3 player,
but really its a tablet. You
can connect with your mobile
network and basically do what
you do on tablet computers
Google, YouTube, and all other
else. There are built-in apps on
the screen, with an interesting
one being its GPS. When you
tap it on, itll show bar graphs
and a map of the globe,
showing your exact coordinates.
It had the promise of Mission:
Impossible, but we never got to
learn it.
Overall, the Tivoli offers a
premium ride, something that
people have come to expect
from cars now with all the
technology going around. So its
the price that is the real selling
point here. The challenge for
Ssangyong is in convincing who
they say their market isthe
young professionals and middle
management executivesto
buy into the brand and forget
the gray market reputation.
So we asked SsangYong
Philippines top guy, Mr. David
Macasadia, managing director,
how he would sell the car
if he were a salesman in
their showroom and a
guy comes in checking
the Tivoli out, but is
having doubts about
buying because he

remembers the brand from the

gray days.
The fact that the customer
is in the SsangYong showroom
means they are curious about
the branddont know much
about it, at bestand probably
want to know more, Macasadia
says. I will give him the facts:
SsangYong is one of the largest
Korean automakers. It has over
60 years of history and has
presence in over 115 countries.
In short, SsangYong is not a
run-of-the-mill vehicle. Its big,
its global, it has history, it has
heritage.
Then Ill ask him to just
take a look at it. Were in the
showroom anyway. SsangYong
may not be a mainstream brand
(yet) but the vehicles speak
for themselves: our styling
is arguably better, and our
technology is at par with the
most popular brands. In other
words, inside were as good as
your mainstream brands, but we
look better.
Then Ill say we are
competitively priced and that
our dealers are fully equipped
to handle their service
requirements.
Just take a look at it. Thats
how you really begin buying
cars. On this part, SsangYong
looks like theyre up for it.

Running until this monthwith the
grand finals in Septemberthe Nissan
GT Academys recruitment events
will let digital drivers get behind the
wheel of the shiny new PS4-exclusive
Gran Turismo Sport before its actual
November release date. If youve ever
thought that I could buy a racing wheel
and seat setup for my mancaveif only I
could test drive it! this is for you.
And if youve ever thought that your

an actual racecar, this search for the

next generation of video game-trained
racing drivers is for you as well. Pull off
a top six finish and Nissan will be flying
you to Silverstone Circuit in the UK for
a race in some real metal against the
fastest contenders from Asia.
Our advice is to start laying down
some serious laps in Gran Turismo right
now, because judging from the finish
times we saw at the launch last July, weve
got some very fast hands in the country.

AUGUST 2016 FH M 107

B O O K E N D E R

I learned to drive in 1993 on a pine

green 1983 Lancer box type. It had
a player where my dad would play
Mario Lanza and Pavarotti cassettes
(side A and side B) on our many road
trips to Ilocos. Its glove compartment
popped open whenever I passed over speed bumps.
With battery breakdowns a common occurrence,
taxi drivers on their lunch break taught me how to
jumpstart the box. Before I stupidly realized that
wheels needed to be changed before they show their
threads, I learned to change a flat tire on busy Edsa,
with laughing truck drivers throwing matchboxes my
way, yelling, Sindihan mo na yan, Miss!
Also, the Lancer had no passenger side mirror.
Four years after I started driving, a friend asked how
I could drive without a sideview mirror. Only then did
I realize that all cars needed a mirror on both sides.
Until that day, I thought some models were made with
just one side mirror.
Learning to drive in that Lancer is one of my
favorite memories.
But then, the more I drove, the more I
encountered asshole drivers. They were the ones
who made me doubt the capabilities of my beloved
Lancer; the ones who made me worryfor the first
timeabout the Lancer breaking down in the middle
of the road, blocking all of humanity. They could be
nasty, those vultures.
They were also the drivers who taught me that
there are motorists out there who, apparently, think
female drivers are second-class citizens on the road.
I get it, guys. I know there are some women drivers
who drive too slow or who cant parallel park. Ive

seen women drivers straddle two lanes. Some drive

at 50 kph on the left lane, and overtake on SLEX
with just two inches between bumpers.
Those drivers do deserve some kind of telling off
for desecrating the art of driving.
But, see, some male drivers do the same thing.
Ive driven next to jeepney drivers who stop in the
middle of the road to let passengers off. Guess
what? They were all men. Some male drivers block
the intersection just because. And Id ridden with
a male friend (who shall remain nameless) who
thought nothing of parking on a pedestrian lane or
next to a PWD ramp.
How do I pluck you out of the 19th century and
explain to you that there is no gender exclusivity to
idiocy and, more importantly, to idiotic driving? You
could castigate a female driver for swerving into
your lane without enough space or signal, but keep
your castigation to the driving offense. Dragging
her chromosome count into your argument not only
weakens your point but also makes you less of a man.
Thats why its gold, this driver-shaming (and
also, on occasion, driver-praising) practice on our
brother mag Top Gear Philippines Facebook page.
Regardless of gender, the wrath is consistent. The
praise is consistent.
The war is against stupid driving habits, not just
stupid driving habits of women. And quit blaring your
horn at people whose cars have broken down on the
road. The noise wont make their cars magically fix
themselves, will it?
