Sherlock Bones Report

STEM Period 3
Melvin Rodriguez, Christopher Carrasco, Carolyna Kyte

Introduction Carolyna: In life, we often wonder about how other people

identify our bones and how it can help people from figuring out who was
killed, and how were they killed. In this Sherlock Bones Report, my
teammates and I realized a lot of things that we did not know. Throughout
this report we got to answer a lot of our own questions. We were told that
the bones we investigated were found inside a black bag inside a
dumpster. Jerry the garbage man reported the findings and traced it back
to a hospital. We sent out a member from the lab and came back with the
news that the hospital did not know what happened nor why the bones
were there in the first place. He also reported that no one was outside by
the time he arrived and that there was dried up blood by the dumpster. It
seemed like people were fighting right outside the hospital. We had come
to a conclusion that these people were probably fighting according to
witnesses but we do not know the exact reason towards why they were
fighting, we can conclude that both victims died. Time? We dont know.
Also we cannot fully make out a reason of their deaths because we do not
have the other bones to fully support this theory. Theory: boyfriend and
girlfriend were fighting to the death and there was no victor.
Procedure Christopher:
In order to find out the data for the bones we had to use three tools a
caliper, a protractor and a large caliper to find out the data. To find out the
sub-pubic angle and the greater sciatic cavity of the victims pelvis we had
to draw the sub-pubic angle on a piece of paper by putting it relatively close
to the paper and used a pencil to trace the angle then used the protractor
to measure the angle which is relatively easy to find. In order to find the

pubis body width it was also relatively easy to find as we used the calipers
to find the length as we put both ends of the caliper on the pubis body, then
made it so that there is no space to tighten it more to get its size in
millimeters by looking at the point that the calipers indicate. Finding the
shape of the pelvic cavity is easy as u just have to look at it from an
overhead view to determine its shape. To find the the shape of the eye orbit
the and the upper edge of eye orbit was fairly easy as we had to look and
feel it to see whether it is blunt or sharp or round and square. To find the
data for the skull was fairly easy as we just had to feel and observe the
skull. To find the nasal measurements we had to use calipers to measure
the nose for both the height and width of the nose. To find the index of it we
had to divide the height of the nose from the width of it. To find the data of
the femur we had to use the calipers to measure the head of it and the
condyles. To find it overall height we had to use large calipers as the small
one didnt measure that high but using it was the same as the small
calipers. To find the data of the humerus the same was done to the
humerus as to the femur
Findings Melvin:
The two victim that were found was a male. Based on the bones
provided, we have found which belonged to which person. The pelvis found
on the crime scene belonged to a male. This conclusion was made
because the pelvis cavity shape is more heart shaped than circular. This
means that the person could not bare a child. Also the ilium, ischium, and
pubis bones are not fully ossified and you can tell this because you can see
signs of epiphyseal unions so this means that the victim had to be around
19 years old. The epiphyseal unions are the spaces between the bones
and as you get older, your bones form together. Also the skill that was
found in the scene is believed to be a male because the Mandible Shape is
more U- shaped instead of being V-shaped like a females. Also the frontal
Bone is slanted leading to be male.

Conclusion Carolyna: In conclusion, figuring out what gender and age and
race the bones were was challenging that we even got mixed results with
the sex of the pelvis. At first my partners and I found results thinking that
the pelvis was a female, however the pelvis was male due to the fact that
the male sacrum touched the coccyx.
