Reed City veteran to receive Purple Heart

at Norman Elementary Veterans Day ceremony

REED CITY At the end of

1988, amidst tensions in Europe,
Russell Russ Nehmer was stationed in Germany.
We were always told to be
worried about the spies because
there were groups that were going around and they were looking to capture Americans and
gather information, Russ said.
He explained that on the occasions when he would go off base,
he was told to be on the lookout
to see if he was followed and to
check the vehicle after coming
out of a club or restaurant to
make sure nothing had been
changed.
In November 1989 things
changed in Berlin and Russ
was on one of the towers of the
Berlin Wall as it was being torn
down. Across from him on another tower was an east German
soldier.
We were told if East German
soldiers started shooting on the
crowd, we were supposed to take
them out, Russ explained. As
soon as the gate came up, I was
watching this guy and I looked
down at the crowd for a second
and I looked back up and I didnt
see him. I looked for him and
couldnt see him and then saw
he was climbing down the tower.
He had taken his jacket off and
had left his weapon up there. He
started kissing the women and
dancing with them. You could
tell he didnt want to be part of
it.
After the wall came down,
Russ stayed in Germany until
he was sent to Iraq for Desert
Storm. When his four-year term
with the Army was up in July
1992, Russ stayed in Germany

for three weeks.
and served in the reserves until
1998.
In 1995, Russ began attending
the University of Stirling in
Germany. He played football on
their team and was selected for
the British Collegiate All-Star
Team and the British University
All-Star Team.
He graduated with a Bachelors Degree in business and
sports operations in 1998 and
was offered a job as assistant
commissioner and tournament
coordinator for the European
Federation of American Football, which led to a job as operation manager for NFL Europe in
2000.
In January 2004 Russ got news
that would change the course
of his life. His cousin, who had
been serving in the Army, was
killed in Iraq.
By early spring, the then
34-year-old Russ had re-enlisted
in the Army.

Knowing that he was in the

Army, knowing that he had
also been in the 82nd Airborne,
which I had also been in when
I first got out of basic training,
I felt like we had a bond, Russ
said. It made me feel like I
didnt just have some responsibility to go in and serve my country, but because I had lost someone personal in our family. It
wasnt just me raising my hand
and saying, Ill go in again. I felt
it was personal.
However, Russ had a wife and
daughter who were in Germany.
So, in an effort to get stationed in
Germany, he decided he wouldnt
go back in as a just paratrooper.
I knew there were intel units,
special forces, infantry units in
Germany, Russ said. I thought,
If I go back as infantry, thats
what I still am. I thought, What
if I learn intelligence on top of
being an infantry guy and go
into special forces? And thats

what I did.
Russ did two tours in the Middle East with the special forces,
but in October 2010 he was injured during combat while in
Afghanistans Wardak Province.
We were getting attacked by
about 40 to 50 insurgents. They
were about a half mile outside
the base and they were starting
to mount an attack and then the
first thing I remember is the
first rocket coming in, Russ
explained. The first rocket hit
the fuel point behind me and it
blew up and then I climbed up on
a M-RAP vehicle. Its a protective
vehicle ... I was up on top where
the gun was and I was trying to
see over the barrier where these
guys were and where they were
shooting from so I could call.
I dont remember the second
(rocket) coming in.
The second rocket landed
about 30 feet to Russs right,
sending him flying backwards.
I was top heavy and I couldnt
flip back over, he said. I landed
on my head and I crumpled. I
remember on the impact on my
helmet straps and they came
across my face.
Now, six years later, Russ has
been through numerous surgeries to repair the damage, but still
feels the physical and emotional
pain of his injury as he suffers
from chronic back pain, slight
limp and Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder.
He has received a Bronze Star
for his service, and on Veterans
Day, he will receive a Purple
Heart, NATO medal and retirement medal at G.T. Norman Elementary Schools Veterans Day
Ceremony.

HERSEY The race for village president is unlikely to be

decided any time soon with both
candidates agreeing some nonHersey residents voted in the
election.
John Calabrese, the incumbent, was running against firsttime candidate Robin Marvel.
Marvel said county election
officials told her she won the
race by a two-vote (105-103) margin. She added, however, that
some voters who live outside the
village limits were given ballots
to vote in the village election.
Calabrese agreed that some invalid ballots were among those
counted in the race. He said he
heard of three ballots that were
given to voters who did not live
within the village limits.
Karen Bluhm, Osceola County
Clerk, said a problem may have
occurred with the street index.
The problem, Bluhm said, is
something the board of canvassers are unable to deal with.
I dont know where were
headed with this, Bluhm said.
Village residents, she added,
may need to look at their village charter to figure out how to
proceed.
Marvel said her goals are
for village officials to be completely transparent with their
decisions. She said it is often
difficult to receive information
regarding village finances. She
also would like to bring the residents of the village together and
work for everyones benefit.
Calabrese said his goals for
the future of the village are
to make improvements to the
infrastructure. He said he is
pleased that the villages debt
has been pared down, and that
he and the village council have
kept Hersey solvent through
all the years funding has been
reduced.

Among those returning for
another four-year term is trustee Roger Meinert, who earned
the highest number of votes in
the contested race for one of the
four seats.
Of the five candidates on the
ballot, Meinert earned 22 percent of the votes cast.
A total of 2,307 of Reed Citys
eligible voters headed to the
polls to select four trustees to
guide the direction of the city.
Earning 506 of those votes,
Meinert, who will now enter his
second term on the council, said
he while he is proud of his progress representing the city, he is
ready to continue to do the work
needed to make improvements.
I feel my last four years on
city council have been a success
considering the issues we have
faced, he said, noting it was
the work in front of the city that
motivated him to seek a second
term.
I chose to run again so I
could continue to serve our
great city and be a voice of reason.
The additional candidates
joining Meinert will be Dan
Burchett, who earned 470 votes,
and incumbents David Scharlow with 461 votes and Carol Tillotson with 444 votes.
The fifth candidate vying
for one of four seats was Evan
Traynor, who collected 426 votes
in the close city race.

Kailing top vote getter in

REED CITY Humbling.

That was the description Reed

Reed City school board region
offered him on election night
Tuesday.
Of the seven candidates vying
for the four available four-year
terms on the school board, Kailing swept the represented townships as the highest vote earner.
With many long-time board
members not seeking re-election, the competitive race guaranteed several new faces, with
Kailing earning the top spot in
all area townships.
Kailing collected around 21
percent of the total votes cast in

Keeping control of Fido.
The black handheld device
of last week is a springloaded locking retractable
dog leash.
The open cavity is where
your hand can find a comfortable grip. When unlocked, the tether portion
of the leash extends and rewraps internally as your
pet jaunts ahead, tallies
behind, or gets distracted
by a vivacious squirrel.
The idea is that you can
walk at a constant pace, allowing the dog to pause periodically for urine breaks
or sniff-fests. It also comes
into play when restricting
the distance between the
two of you.
Depressing the chubby
button (middle right of

slide-button, locks the
unwinding mechanism
thereby keeping Fido
close, safe from distractions (other animals, mud
puddles), and safe from
danger (nearby traffic, broken glass).

Falling Feathers hunting preserve open for business

By Andy Duffy
Weekly Voice

Evart residents Tim

and Sara Ladd come
from hunting families.
They both grew up in the
Michigans thumb where
pheasant hunting was big.
There, Tim said, schools
closed for the opening day
of pheasant season rather
than for the opening day
of deer season as they do
around here.
Tim began hunting at an
early age. Sara, although
not a hunter, frequently
acompanied her father
when he hunted.
After Tim and Sara
wed, Tim began hunting
with his father-in-law. As
pheasant hunting declined
across the state, they
began visiting game preserves.
It was natural, then, for
Tim to begin taking his
children hunting while
they were still young.
Their oldest son, Trevin,
a high-school senior, has
long been interested in
business, Sara said. About
a year ago, while he and
Tim were hunting a pheasant preserve, Trevin asked
Tim why they didnt open
a pheasant preserve.
And why not? They live
in the country on a piece
of property with pastures
and gently rolling hills.
The father-son team began
taking the necessary steps
to open the business. They
built a flight pen to hold
birds and applied for a permit. They even obtained

a dog-training license enabling them to train dogs
all year round on exotic
birds. A DNR biologist and
two conservation officers
did a walk-through of the
property and gave the necessary approval.
Nothing comes without
difficulty, and the Ladds
encountered theirs. They
had to find another source
of birds after the supplier
they anticipated getting
birds from sold out. They
located another breeder,
and Falling Feathers Hunting Preserve opened in
September.
Its truly a family endeavor, too. Tim and
Trevin put out birds and
are available to guide
hunters. Sara maintains
a Facebook page for the
business. Even their dog,
Gypsy, gets involved. The
lithe German shorthair is
always eager to go along to
find and point birds. The
fully finished dog is good
at what she does, too.
The Ladds pride themselves on offering a good
experience to their customers. They will offer
gun-safety training before
a hunt and can even loan
shotguns to hunters. They
will clean the birds their
hunters harvest.
The Ladds offer a kidfriendly operation, too.

Some of the best shooters

have been 10- and 11- yearold children, Tim said.
The preserve isnt just
for pheasant hunters,
either. The property has
some waterholes where
duck hunters can try calling in some waterfowl.
Woodcock are sometimes
present on the preserve.
And deer blinds are available. The deer hunting
opportunities may be
especially attractive for
hunters with a handicap,
Tim said.
Those interested in hunting at Falling Feathers
may buy several birds or a
few. There is no minimum
purchase. Hunters are also
allowed to take scratch
birds birds that escaped
other hunters and remain
on the preserve. The current cost is $20 per pheasant. The price is the same
for roosters and hens.
Some birds escape hunters and leave the preserve.
The Ladds are fine with
that. They like the idea of
escaped birds surviving
predators, breeding and reestablishing a wild pheasant population in the area.
That is one of the goals of
the business.
Another goal is to express their faith. On their
preserve logo, the feathers
is in the shape of a cross.

Andy Duffy | Weekly Voice

Evart high school senior Trevin Ladd suggested opening a pheasant preserve. He is now one of the
operators of Falling Feathers Hunting Preserve.
The cross-shaped T, Tim
said, is no accident. It is an
assertion that their business is also a Christian
outreach.
Falling Feathers will

remain open through firearms deer season and is

open seven days a week.
