RECRUITMENT SND RETENTION PROBLEMS AT POLYMERS UK
The Tasks
1. List the information required to produce an estimate of the cost of
labour turnover, identifying what was already available and what more
would be needed.
2. Outline the recommendations you would make.
3. Summarize your business case.
In order to produce an estimate of the cost of labour turnover, the
information required are:

Recommendations
In view of the present situation wherein the problems of retention and the
increasing time taken to fill vacancies are beginning to cause serious
problems for the business, my recommendations would be first, is to avoid or
at least minimize the use of agencies; participate in job fairs, for this will
enable the company to broaden its source of recruits.
Next one is regarding the direct recruitment of graduates, wherein instead
of just focusing on a small number of universities, they should also explore
the other universities.
While given the responsibility of making the final choice, line managers
must also be given interviewing techniques training as it might help them
clarify stuff and get to know the applicant better.
It is also suggested to hold a formal induction program as such will make
those new in the company feel welcome and will give them sense of
belonging, as the saying goes, first impression lasts.
The fact that rates of pay appear to be competitive, this calls for a
development of a better compensation, benefits and reward programs.
Lastly, despite receiving those management and team leader trainings
from an outside provider on leadership skills, there was no evidence if such
was effective. There must be regular monitoring so that they will be aware if
application of said skills improved the organization as well as if they should
stick to it or not.

Business Case
1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Polymers UK, a subsidiary of International Polymers has been in existence
for three years and has over 650 staff. It has been conducting intensive
recruitment campaign over the said years in the highly competitive local and
national labour market but later on experiences retention and retention
problems.
2. ISSUE
Problems of retention and the increasing time to fill vacancies are
beginning to cause serious problems for the business; primary exigency
would be the cost of labour turnover.
3. OBJECTIVES
The main objectives of this are to:

Reduce the cost of labour turnover.

Reduce the length of time positions are vacant.
Solve the retention problems.

4. RECOMMENDATIONS
In order to attain the first objective or reduction of cost of labor turnover,
the second third objectives must first be settled.
For the reduction of length of time positions are vacant, the company
must be known for being the best specialty chemical company to work for
and should come up with better recruiting scope and techniques.
Lastly, to solve the retention problems, the company must foster a
positive work environment that supports the employee well-being, maintain
its good reputation, tighten interpersonal links in the company, strengthen

the sense of unity and belonging, increase in the rates of pay, and
development of benefits and rewards system.
5. JUSTIFICATION
The implementation of the recommendations will most likely help in
resolving the recruitment and retention problems at Polymers UK because
those will inspire their enthusiasm about the company, and influence their
employee satisfaction and commitment, which will also result in settlement
of the labour turnover.
