Somebody's Knockin' at My Door Trinity Bell Choir

Great is Thy Faithfulness

WELCOME AND KIDS MESSAGE

INVOCATION
INTRODUCTION
In the name of the Father, and of the (+) Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
God in three persons, blessed Trinity! Today we celebrate the name of
God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. When we say God is the triune God, we
are saying something about who God is beyond, before, and after the
universe: that there is community within God. We especially bless God
today for this community of Faith: Trinity Lutheran Church, and we are
invited to show our thanks by giving back to God. Praise Father, Son, and
Holy Spirit!
CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags
and a cry room are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed.
An usher will gladly provide you with assistance.
As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate
all cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service.
We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion
registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so
that we may record your presence with us.
PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW
In the name of the Father, and of the (+)Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Father, you sent your Word to bring us truth and your Spirit to make us
holy. Through them we come to know the mystery of your life. Help us to
worship you, one God in three Persons, by proclaiming and living our faith
in you. We ask you this, Father, (+)Son, and Holy Spirit, one God, true and
living, for ever and ever. Amen.

GATHERING SONG: Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty! (ELW 413)

GREETING
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of
the Holy Spirit be with you all!
And also with you!

CANTICLE OF PRAISE
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Let us pray.
Almighty Creator and ever-living God: we worship your glory, eternal
Three-in-One, and we praise your power, majestic One-in-Three. Keep us
steadfast in this faith, defend us in all adversity, and bring us at last into
your presence, where you live in endless joy and love, Father, Son, and
Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.
FIRST READING: Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31
1Does not wisdom call,
and does not understanding raise her voice?
2On the heights, beside the way,
at the crossroads she takes her stand;
3beside the gates in front of the town,

at the entrance of the portals she cries out:

4To you, O people, I call,
and my cry is to all that live.
22The LORD created me at the beginning of his work,
the first of his acts of long ago.
23Ages ago I was set up,
at the first, before the beginning of the earth.
24When there were no depths I was brought forth,
when there were no springs abounding with water.
25Before the mountains had been shaped,
before the hills, I was brought forth
26when he had not yet made earth and fields,
or the worlds first bits of soil.
27When he established the heavens, I was there,
when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,
28when he made firm the skies above,
when he established the fountains of the deep,
29when he assigned to the sea its limit,
so that the waters might not transgress his command,
when he marked out the foundations of the earth,
30then I was beside him, like a master worker;
and I was daily his delight,
rejoicing before him always,
31rejoicing in his inhabited world
and delighting in the human race.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

PSALM: Psalm 8
Refrain:

Tone:

O | LORD our Lord,

how majestic is your name in | all the earth!
2
you whose glory is chanted above the heavens out of the mouths of
in- | fants and children;
you have set up a fortress against your enemies, to silence the
foe | and avenger. R
3

When I consider your heavens, the work | of your fingers,

the moon and the stars you have set | in their courses,
4
what are mere mortals that you should be mind- | ful of them,
human beings that you should | care for them? R
5

Yet you have made them little less | than divine;

with glory and hon- | or you crown them.
6
You have made them rule over the works | of your hands;
you have put all things un- | der their feet:
7
all | flocks and cattle,
even the wild beasts | of the field,
8
the birds of the air, the fish | of the sea,
and whatever passes along the paths | of the sea.
9
O | LORD our Lord,
how majestic is your name in | all the earth! R
SECOND READING: Romans 5:1-5
1

Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through
our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom we have obtained access to this grace
in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of
God. 3And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that
suffering produces endurance, 4and endurance produces character, and

character produces hope, 5and hope does not disappoint us, because Gods
love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been
given to us.

HYMN OF THE DAY: Creating God, Your Fingers Trace (ELW 684)

The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and
earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally
begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God
from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he
came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the
virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified
under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third
day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into
heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come
again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will
have no end.

VERSE:

Holy, holy, holy is the | Lord of hosts;*

Gods glory fills | the whole earth. (Isa. 6:3)

GOSPEL: John 16:12-15

The holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to John.
Glory to you, O Lord.
[Jesus said,] 12I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear
them now. 13When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the
truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears,
and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14He will glorify me,
because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15All that the Father
has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare
it to you.
The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.
SERMON Pastor Charles Peterson

CREED

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds
from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is
worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We
believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one
baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the
dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION
Rejoicing in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, let us pray for the
church, those in need, and all of Gods creation.
Please sit or kneel as you are able.
Each petition ends with:
Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.
We lift our prayers to you, O God, trusting your promise to hear us; through
Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

CONFESSION AND PROCLAMATION OF FORGIVENESS

OFFERTORY HYMN: We Give Thee but Thine Own (ELW 686)

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.
Most merciful God,
we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We
have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have
done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our
whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the
sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us,
and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your holy name. Amen.
In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for
his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of
the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the
entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the +
Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
PEACE
The peace of Christ be with you always.
And also with you.

OFFERING PRAYER
Let us pray.
Blessed are you, O God, ruler of heaven and earth. Day by day you shower
us with blessings. As you have raised us to new life in Christ, give us glad
and generous hearts, ready to praise you and to respond to those in need,
through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK

Nicolaus Copernicus, died 1543; Leonhard Euler, died 1783; scientists
Tuesday, May 24, 2016
These two men were both scientists who helped to explain the wonders of
God's universe. Copernicus is best known for promoting the idea that the
sun, not the earth, is at the center of our solar system. Euler was one of the
founders of pure mathematics, and contributed to many other fields.
John Calvin, renewer of the church, died 1564
Friday, May 27, 2016
Gifted both as a systematic theologian and as an interpreter of scriptures,
Calvin embraced the Reformation, and as a preacher in Geneva,
Switzerland, brought a theocratic government to it. He is regarded as the
father of the Reformed churches.
The Altar flowers are administered by the worship committee. The 2016
Altar Flower chart is posted on the bulletin board in the lower lobby and
there is attached to it a tear-off sheet for donors to complete and hand into
the office or place in the offering plate for proper publication in the
bulletin.
If you would like to purchase flowers for worship in memory of or in honor
of someone, please sign up. The cost is $35 per arrangement, and checks
should be made out to Trinity Lutheran Church. The contact person is Mary

WEBCAST Wednesday, May 25, at 8 p.m. (EDT)

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,
Please mark your calendars for the next live webcast, A Place for All, on
Wednesday, May 25, at 7 p.m. (CDT). As we continue the conversation on
racism in the United States, we must look within our congregations and
communities.
Do the people in our pews reflect the people in our neighborhoods? If not,
how do we take steps to invite and welcome our neighbors to participate in
the work of this church? How do we engage with and advocate for
vulnerable populations?
As members of the ELCA, we believe that we are a church that belongs to
Christ. There is a place for everyone here. Yet contentment, fear or racism
individual and institutional can hold us back from being the diverse,
welcoming church that Christ calls us to be.
Please join me once again for a conversation with panelists from the ELCA
who are committed to and experienced in growing diverse communities of
faith. Together we welcome:

The Rev. Ruben Duran, director for new congregations for the
ELCA

The Rev. Matt Stuhlmuller, pastor, Redeemer Church, Chicago,

Ill.
