Abstract: The report text is a statement of the results of an investigation or of any
matter on which definite information is required. The purpose of a technical report is to
completely and clearly describe technical work, why it was done, a result obtained and
implications of those results. This text is the result of a systematic observation and
analysis. The design of this research was descriptive quantitative research. This
research was conducted to find out what level of students' ability in writing report text
at second grade of SMAN 12 Pekanbaru. In this chapter, the researcher would present
the findings based on the data obtained from rater. In writing report text ability, the
student were assessed in four terms, they are structure (S), formatting (F), mechanics
(M), and documentation and references (D&R). The instrument of the research was
students writing in report text. The purpose of the instrument as tool to collect the data
from respondents of the research. The researcher gave test to the students, then students
chosen one topic. The technique of collecting data by asking students to write report
text into the answer sheet with the selection of the topic of observation of objects,
animals, people and places. The researcher took 65 students as the sample consisting of
2 classes, 31 students from class XI MIPA1 and 34 students from class XI MIPA4.
Based on the result of the average of each component on report text, the highest
average of documentation & references was 7.8, component mechanics was 7.4,
component formatting was 6.8, and component structure was 6.6. Based on the result of
analyzing of students ability in writing report text at second grade of SMAN 12
Pekanbaru, found that average of their ability was 71,5 categorized fair.

INTRODUCTION
Background of Problem
Writing is one of the four basic skills
that should be learned by the students in
Senior High School beside speaking,
listening, and reading. This skill is needed
for them to support the progress of their
academic achievement. By writing, the
students will know how to write a good
content into a text about the object that
they want to describe and how to organize
the ideas which are supported with
relevant supporting sentences. In this skill,
the students can improve their grammar
such as how to use correct tenses,
MIRZA NOVICA (116311968)

adjective, articles and a noun phrase. They

also can arrange a text into good
mechanics such as word spelling,
punctuation, and capitalization. Thus, this
skill is useful for students especially for
Senior High School students in the second
year.
Writing learning material contained
in the English lesson plan curriculum 2013
for class XI, the core competence of no. 3
Understanding
knowledge
(factual,
conceptual and procedural) by curiosity
about science, technology, art, culture,
1

associated phenomena, and events seem

real and basic competencies of no. 3.13
Applying text structure and language
elements to carry out a social function text
by stating factual report and inquire about
the factual scientific texts about people,
animals, objects, symptoms, natural and
social events, short, and simple.
Based on the researcher observation
at class XI of SMAN 12 Pekanbaru, the
researcher has obtained the phenomenon
that; 1) Lack of curiosity of students
towards the subject matter presented by
the teachers. In a learning situation,
students tend to get tired and less
enthusiastic in learning the English
language, especially on the ability to write.
2) Students skills in writing report text are
poor, the inverted arrangement of many
stories and not directed properly. The
concept of the story that written is still
disheveled. 3) The low ability students in
writing report text, an arrangement of the
general classification and description is
still not well-structured. 4) Based on
teacher lesson plans, teachers often use test
answer choice instead of the writing test
students, so that students are less able to
develop their ability while writing report
text.
The report text is a statement of the
results of an investigation or of any matter
on which definite information is required.
The purpose of a technical report is to
completely and clearly describe technical
work, why it was done, a result obtained
and implications of those results.
This text is the result of a systematic
observation and analysis). Thus, the actual
report and descriptive text have differences
are quite clear, although both appear to be
regarded as "twin brothers" though. In
essence, in the text report usually contains
facts observations, research, observations
of objects, animals, people and places.
Most importantly this text can be proven
scientifically. While the descriptive text
that does not require scientific proof.
The above problems mentioned need
to be solved in order to achieve the goal of
MIRZA NOVICA (116311968)

teaching writing itself. There are some

alternative solutions to overcome them,
such as joining teacher training or
workshop, varying teaching aids, adding
materials other than students book and
exercise book and finding effective
teaching techniques to be implemented in
the classroom.
Based on these descriptions, the
author is interested in doing research by
title An Analysis of Students Ability in
Writing Report Text at Second Grade
of SMAN 12 Pekanbaru.
Identification of the Problem
Based on the background of the
study mentioned above, the identification
of the problem are:
1. Lack of curiosity of students towards
the subject matter presented by the
teachers. In a learning situation,
students tend to get tired and less
enthusiastic in learning the English
language, especially on the ability to
write.
2. Student skills in writing report text are
poor, the inverted arrangement of many
stories and not directed properly. The
concept of the story that written is still
disheveled. Students are also still
difficult to write simple present tense.
3. Low ability students in writing report
text, an arrangement of the general
classification and description are still
not well-structured. The description of
the students still often randomized and
repeated.
4. Based on teacher lesson plans, teachers
often use test answer choice instead of
the writing test students, so that
students are less able to develop their
description while writing report text.
The sampling of this study is random
sampling with number 38 students of
XIA class and XIB class.
Limitation of the Problem
The researcher limits the study about
Students Ability In Writing Report Text
At Second Grade of SMAN 12
2

Pekanbaru. In this paper, the author

focused only to find out students ' level
ability in writing report text.
Formulation of the Problem
Based on the limitation of the
problem above, formulation of problem
formulation follows: what level of
students ability in writing report text at
second grade of SMAN 12 Pekanbaru?

THE REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Writing
According to Alice (1999) Writing
is a discovery process that involves
discovering ideas, how to organize them
and what that you want to put over on
your order, so a lot of what an author
doesnt actually appear on the page. It is a
means of communication. Whenever the
author wants to write, he has to know the
audience or reader, it will help in reaching
the goal of communicating clearly and
effectively.
According to Groth (2013), there are
three basic principles in academic writing,
namely, content, register, and offenses.
Referring to content, it should be made
clear, specific, and relevant. The register
should be formal, to the point, and
concise. On the other hand, academic
writing should be free from offenses and,
in most cases, should avoid sensitive
issues.
According to Yi (2009) writing is a
process of expressing ideas or thoughts in
words, should be done at our leisure. How
can we do something that we do not
enjoy? Writing can be very enjoyable as
long as we have the ideas and the means
to achieve it. Writing is the activity or
occupation of writing, for example, books,
stories, or articles. We can take more
times to think and choose words in order
to express our idea, thought, and feeling.
We still can make editing or revision if it
is not so clear to express what intends to
write. Writing is a progressive activity.
MIRZA NOVICA (116311968)

This means that when you first write

something down, you have already been
thinking about what you are going to say
and how you are going to say it. The after
you have finished writing, you read what
you have written and made changes and
corrections. Therefore, writing is never an
ones step actions; it is a process that has
several steps.
Report Text
According to Bloom (1987) report is
a text which presents information about
something. It is as a result of systematic
observation and analysis. Report text has
two generic structures. The first is general
classification it is usually in the first
paragraph of the text. This part usually
introduces the topic of the report or tells
what phenomenon under discussion is. It
can be a short description of the subject or
it can be definitions from the subject that
are described. The second is the
description. In this part, the author usually
will describe the details of the topic or
subject such as physical appearance, parts,
qualities, habits or behavior. Every
paragraph in the part of description usually
gives us information about one feature of
the subject.
According to Reid (2012), a report is
a highly structured document written in a
formal style. Normally a report is based on
your reading and some form of practical
work, such as an investigation, survey,
experiment or review of practice in other
organizations. Reports are written for a
particular purpose, to inform, to persuade,
or to offer recommendations. They are also
produced for a specific audience. Reports
generally draw conclusions based on their
findings and may suggest a course of
action or areas of further research.
According to Hyland (2004), a
report is a statement of the results of an
investigation or of any matter on which
definite information is required. Reports
are a highly structured form of writing
often following conventions that have
been laid down to produce a common
3

format. Structure and convention in

written reports stress the process by which
the information was gathered as much as
the information itself.
According to Leah and Jefferson
(2009) the purpose of a technical report is
to completely and clearly describe
technical work, why it was done, result
obtained and implications of those result.
The technical report serves as means of
communicating the work to others and
possibly providing useful information
about that work at some later date. A wellwritten report allows the reader to quickly
understand what has been accomplished.
The report also provides sufficient detail to
allow the reader to recreate the results
although the level of detail provided
depends heavily on the reports audience
and any proprietary nature of the work.
According to Smithee (2009) clear
presentation is at least as important as the
results themselves; therefore, writing a
report is an exercise in effective
communication of technical information.
Result, such as numerical values, designed
systems or graphs by themselves are not
very useful. To be meaningful to others,
result must be supported by a written
explanation describing how results were
obtained and what significance they hold,
or how a designed system actually
functions.
There
are
uncountable
variations in engineering report format.
Each group, institution, company may
have its own standard format to follow.
This report is being offered as an example
of the kind of information and progression
order that should be present in a sound
technical report. There are certain
elements common in most engineering
writings. These elements can be seen in
any typical engineering report. A
technical report must inform readers of
the reasons, means, results, and
conclusions of the subject matter being
reported. The mechanics and format of
writing a report may vary but the content
is always similar.

RESEARCH METODOLOGY
Research Design
The design of this research was
descriptive
quantitative
research.
According to Sugiyono (2012) the
descriptive quantitative research is a kind
of research a form of research based on
data collected during the
study
systematically the facts and the properties
of the object studied by combining the
relationship between variables involved in
it, then interpreted based on the theories
and related literature. This method aimed
to provide a fairly clear picture of the
problem under study.
Location and Time of the Research
The research has been completed at
SMAN 12 Pekanbaru on Garuda Sakti
streets Km No. 3, Tampan, Pekanbaru
City during February March 2016.
Subject of the Research
According
Sugiyono
(2012)
population was a generalization which
consisted of objects/ subjects that had
certain qualities and characteristics were
determined by the investigator to be
studied and then drawn conclusions.
Population was all of individual of subject
research. The population in this research
was 303 student of second grade at
SMAN 12 Pekanbaru.

can be taken between 10-15% or 20-25%.

In this study researchers have set 21%
from the total amount of 303 students and
it was 65 students which consisted of 2
class, they were 31 students from class XI
MIPA1, and 34 students from class XI
MIPA4.
Instrument of the Research
The instrument of the research was
students writing in report text. The
purpose of the instrument as tool to collect
the data from respondents of the research.
The researcher gave test to the students,
then students chosen one topic from the
list, following:
1)
Observations of object, such as
books, class, hat, etc.
2)
Animals, such as panda, elephant,
cat, dog, etc.
3)
People, such as family, friend,
president, idol, etc.
4)
Places, such as beach, tour vacation,
mount, lake, etc.
The Technique of Analyzing Data
After collecting the data, the
researcher gave the documentation to the
rater. Then, researcher and the rater gave
the score based on the wring report text
rubric score. In this research, the rubric
scores of report text divided into three
main categories; 1) Does not meet
expectations (1 3 point) means results of
student writing report text are less
structured, poorly quality of the content
written, a lot of grammar mistakes and the
intent of the text cant be understood. 2)
Meets expectations (4 7 point) the
results of student writing report text is
well composed, quite consistent quality of
the writing, grammar errors can be
tolerated, and the intent of the text still
can be understood. 3) Exceeds
expectations mean the results of student
writing report text has been arranged
perfectly, very professional quality of the
writing, grammar and spelling is used
perfectly, the contents of the text is very
easy to understand. Finally, the researcher
MIRZA NOVICA (116311968)

took and calculated all the scores from

rater and analyzed students wring report
text whether their writing categorized:
