TheChicagoManualofStylepresentstwobasicdocumentationsystems:(1)notesandbibliographyand(2)author
date.Choosingbetweenthetwooftendependsonsubjectmatterandthenatureofsourcescited,aseachsystemis
favoredbydifferentgroupsofscholars.
Thenotesandbibliographystyleispreferredbymanyinthehumanities,includingthoseinliterature,history,andthe
arts.Thisstylepresentsbibliographicinformationinnotesand,often,abibliography.Itaccommodatesavarietyof
sources,includingesotericoneslessappropriatetotheauthordatesystem.
Theauthordatesystemhaslongbeenusedbythoseinthephysical,natural,andsocialsciences.Inthissystem,
sourcesarebrieflycitedinthetext,usuallyinparentheses,byauthorslastnameanddateofpublication.Theshort
citationsareamplifiedinalistofreferences,wherefullbibliographicinformationisprovided.
Asidefromtheuseofnotesversusparentheticalreferencesinthetext,thetwosystemsshareasimilarstyle.Clickon
