Dear Parishioners,
In this Sundays gospel, Jesus speaks about wars and
revolution, nation fighting against nation, earthquakes, plagues,
famine, fearful sights, persecutions, imprisonment, betrayal by family
and friends, even being put to death. Not a pretty picture in fact, it
can sound downright depressing. But Jesus also says to his disciples, Do not be afraid... Your
endurance will win you your lives. And the reading would have ended with the familiar
words, This is the Gospel of the Lord. This is the Good News.
How often do we look at the world around us and get depressed? We pick up the
newspaper, and most of what we read is bad news: wars in various countries and civil unrest
and protests, great injustices being done to the less privileged, refugees at our doorsteps,
people suffering from natural disasters. Not to mention our own personal lives - we go
through the disappointments of relationships and betrayals, financial difficulties, we see our
loved ones dying from sickness. Yet in all this, our call is to have hope, and not be discouraged
or afraid. No matter what we go through in life, whatever happens in our world, death and
disasters do not have to be the last word... we are in Gods hands, and His last word is Jesus:
the Beginning and the End, the One who has won us eternal life. This is the Good News.
At the same time, we are also called to act, to do our part in promoting a culture of life
and love, instead of death and hatred. It is never enough to just put up with the things that
happen to us or around us each one of us can be an positive force in our lives and that of
others. Change is possible. Love is possible. Forgiveness is possible. Justice is possible. Not
easy... but possible. And when we each do our part, our endurance can make a big difference
in our own lives and in the world. I dont know about you, but to me, this definitely sounds
like Good News!!
VERBUM DEI MISSIONARIES MEETING: This week, I had the privilege to participate in a
meeting in Rome, with other members of the Verbum Dei community. 35 missionaries
(sisters, brothers, priests and married couples) of 16 nationalities, currently working in 6
countries across Northern Europe, gathered together to share: the challenges our mission,
how to live our call as missionary men and women and work together as an ecclesial
community, common projects, etc. It was a very fruitful encounter, and we all returned to our
mission field with a greater desire to work for the Kingdom: another good news!
REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY: This Sunday we remember all those who have lost their lives in
various wars, especially those personally known by members of our parish community. On
the 11am Mass, there will be a special celebration with a procession at the end, where a
wreath will be laid at the cross outside the church building.
Have a blessed week ahead! Sr. Devy
