Mantra for Changing Your Destiny: Mul Mantra (or Mool Mantra)

Open window against a white wall and the cloudy sky and sunI have a friend who s g
oing through some serious challenges. He s struggling in his life; there are prob
lems in his marriage, problems in his business, and he has a deep sense of loss
for a family that he has never had. He just can t find the place within himself tha
t feels settled, and he has lapsed into some old addictions as a way to cope.
This man is very spiritual and often reads and attends spiritual classes, semina
rs and workshops. But his spiritual practice ends there. He has no daily pract
ice, no plan of action to help himself feel better. He has been this way for s
everal years.
In another attempt to learn something new that he thought might make him feel bett
er, he went to a vedic astrologer, presumably to help him find out what he should
do , in terms of his failing marriage and a career move. The vedic reading confi
rmed the difficult times he had been having, and then said that they would conti
nue for several years with this challenging period in his life. And just like t
hat, he resigned himself to being unhappy for years to come.
I wanted to sing a song in front of him and grab his attention. Imagine a strin
g band made up of furniture, Disney-style, and me singing Life is what you make i
t, fate is how you take it! But I couldn t get through to him; none of his friends
could. Once he heard that his fate was misery, he believed it so deeply that it w
ill likely become true.
It s not that I don t believe in Vedic Astrology. In fact, I do. But I also believ
e that we can rise above restrictions in our karma and fate and re-write our own
destiny.
Yogi Bhajan gave us the mantra with which to do so. The Mul Mantra, the words f
irst spoken by the spiritual master Guru Nanak after enlightenment, literally tr
anslates as the Root Mantra , or the mantra from which all other mantras in the Kun
dalini yoga tradition are built. It contains the core, essential truth of creat
ion, and its vibration is so powerful that it can change your fate and help you
re-write your destiny.
Yogi Bhajan said, The Mul Mantra is a fate killer. It removes the fate and change
s the destiny to complete prosperity. This mantra has a powerful vibration of up
liftment that reminds your soul of its fundamental Self purity, prosperity and gra
ce. You become that. Fate dissolves. Destiny can be rewritten.
My friend doesn t need to accept misery. He can see that there are pitfalls in hi
s Vedic chart that may result from past karma or from a point of vibrational att
raction that has called to him those things which he does not want. He has the
power to change his life at any moment. So do you, with the Grace that flows thr
ough you with these words.
Mul Mantra:
Ek Ong Kar, Sat Nam, Karta Purkh, Nirbao Nirvair, Akal Moorat, Ajoonee, Saibhung
Gur Prasad, Jap!
Aad Such, Jugaad Such, Hai Bhee Such, Nanak Hosee Bhee Such.
(Translation: One Creator. Truth is His name. Doer of everything. Fearless, Rev
engeless, Undying, Unborn, Self-illumined, The Guru s gift, Meditate! True in the
beginning. True through all the ages. True even now. Oh Nanak, it is forever tru
e.)
There are many beautiful versions of this mantra, which is also a part of the Aq
uarian Sadhana, the series of chants sung in the morning during Kundalini yoga s
adhana. You can shop around and find a version that works for you. Some of my
favorites are below:
