Area involved: Ongpin Street, Manila Submitted by: Nathaniel Sim 2D Subsection 4 ______________________________________________________________________________ Hazard Identification: 1. Nearby rivers unsanitary status The river on the picture is the Pasig River that passes Ongpin Street has always been a basin of trash. Several projects were done to minimize the damage some parts of it have improved but more is need to be done.
2. Unkept electrical lines
One common problem in the Philippines is the electrical lines that dangle above the streets. Ever since this lines were prone to damage causing blackouts in the area especially during typhoons.
Risk and Effect on Human Health
1. Nearby rivers unsanitary status The current status of the river can be a source for several diseases such as dengue. The unsanitary state can be the breeding ground of the parasite and other bacterias which when humans are exposed causes unwanted effects. 2. Unkept electrical lines The status of the electrical lines sites possible problems on both safety and home convenience. Some of the wires extend down where people can possibly reach it. During night times street children wander the street and may potentially be a victim of electrocution. Other than safety the current status yields to multiple power interruption that can be quite inconvenient to residents without proper electrical backups.
Summary / Assessment of the Locale
1. What is the overall environmental health risk in your neighborhood? Living in Ongpin Street poses problems to health in terms of the nearby unsanitary state of the river. Without proper protection dengue can be a potential disease outcome in the area. Electrical lines also pose concern to safety of the residents. Overall there is a relatively high risk of disease in the area if residents will not have proper protection. 2. Is it healthy place to live? There is no such thing as 100% healthy due to multiple risk but for some of the residents who knows how to protect ones selves and are living in high rise condominium I may say it is a safe place to live in. 3. How does it compare to other communities / cities? Ongpin Street is never the number one place to live in. Other place such as Fort Bonifacio or in Makati would be better in terms of cleanliness and orderliness, but as some say nothing beats home. Compared to our house in the province, our house in the province is much safer better located and has lower environmental risk, lesser noise pollution, lesser air pollution, lesser light pollution, and a lot more. 4. Did you already know about any environmental health risks you discovered in your neighborhood? The risk mentioned above has been there for a long time slowly people are trying to fix it but given that some residents rude and animalistic attitude it takes time. Chinese people are usually divided into two kinds the mainlanders who came from China who has rude and animalistic attitude and the Chinese Filipino once like us who tries to obey and clean the area. 5. Do you feel comfortable living with any environmental risks you discovered in your neighborhood? Living with mainlanders is never comfortable but we already got use to ignoring it. Besides during breaks we get to go to the province where I can say no risk can be seen, because its basically the best location this is due to the fact that our house there is placed in the a couple of meters away from the highway beside SM Rosales and on the other side a rice field. It is quite and very accessible to things needed. 6. What action or policies were taken to address the environmental risks? Routine cleaning of the river and routine electrical line checkup to make sure it poses least problems.
