Association of Canada, several years of experience in journalism, writing, publishing

of freelance staff.

6.Number or people employed in this occupation (indicate whether the number

refers to BC or Canada): 2,200 workers are employed in BC

7. Employment prospects:Wont be that good because jobs usually on come when

another editor is retiring, getting fired, promoted, or quitting. Many editors arent
retiring, quitting, or getting fired or promoted so the turnover rate is low which
means it will be difficult to find a place that has an open editor spot for hire.
8.Related Jobs (list at least 3)
1.Author
2. Video editor
3. Journalist

9. Skills or characteristics required: To be an editor you have to have a general

learning ability, good motor coordination, clerical ability, you need to be detail
oriented, and have to have good social skills because you will have to tell people
what they need to fix and how to make things better which means you will also
need to be able to give good feedback information, and youll need to have good
time management. Also you need good reading, writing, listening skills.

10. Disadvantages of Occupation: There are a couple of disadvantages to this

occupation which are: editors dont get much credit and are usually invisible to the
society; people usually only see the writers work and things they did. Another
disadvantage is the amount of stress that comes with being an editor. There are
many deadlines and pressures to finish editing things, and also pressure to edit
texts perfectly with no mistakes missed.

11. Describe how your values, skills and interests relate to this career option: I
value good feedback, so I would like this job because I would be editing peoples
Planning 10 Career research project

work and giving them feedback as well as correcting their mistakes. I have good
writing and reading skills which will be very important and I have social skills and
can explain ideas properly to another person so that would help me talk to people
whose work I am editing and tell them what is wrong and what they need to fix.

12. What courses and grades are needed to enter this Occupation? You will need
good grades because people only want editors who have very good writing and
reading skills and who are good at their work and can edit texts to near perfection.
You will need the Bachelor of Arts Degree, as well as the Master Degree to become
an editor.
13.Working conditions:Editors typically work in office buildings, while freelance and
contract editors often work from home offices. Editors work for a wide range of
employers, including newspapers, television newsrooms, government and
publishing firms. Also editing is usually done using computers so eye and wrist
strain are possible.

13.Typical hours of work:For an editor a 35-40 hour workweek is typical, however,

they may be required to work extra hours, sometimes on evenings on weekends in
order to meet their deadlines.

14.Describe what has influenced your choice of this occupation: I was influenced by
the fact the I have good writing and reading skills and have gotten good grades in
English so I would be a good natural editor.

15What are the Future Trends of this occupation: The job opportunity is going to
stay about the same as there is predicted to be no growth in the editing field as
there is going to be in the trades industry. This means that it will be just as difficult
to get a job as an editor somewhere in the future as it is now.

16.Go to Work Futures Website (http://www.workbc.ca/) and list 2 points of

information you felt were important and were not covered.

2. Disadvantages of the occupation

Career two
Name:ArjunSamra

Career Name:Family physician

1. Education required and or recommendations: Bachelor of Science Degree which

takes at least four years, and a Medicine Degree (MD) is required which takes at
least three years of undergraduate studies, as well as four years of medical school.
Also after graduating from medical school, you will have to undergo two years of
accredited residency training. To be become a fully licensed physician in B.C,
graduates must pass two licensing exams administered by the Medical Council of
Canada and they must also become licensed through the College of Physicians and
Surgeons of British Columbia. Also, family physicians must pass a national exam
administered by the College of Family Physicians of Canada. These professionals
must also maintain professional insurance through an insurance body. Continuing
medical education and professional development are required throughout their
careers to ensure that in a rapidly changing medical and scientific world, physicians
are providing patients with modern treatments and proper advice. All family
physicians are now required to complete a minimum of 50 hours per year (on
average) of documented continuing professional education throughout their career.

2.Suggested Post-Secondary Institutions:University of British Columbia, University of

Northern B.C

3.Cost of Training in Canadian (full program cost for all years): The fees for all the
education required to become a family physician is: about $24,325.8 for the
Bachelor of Science Degree at UBC ,about $25,744.24 for the Doctor of Medicine
Degree (MD) at UBC, and about $62 660- 65 288 for medical school at UBC.

Planning 10 Career research project

4.Salary Range: $162,908 to $221,196 per year

5.Job Description:A family physician is a person who is devoted to comprehensive

health care for people of all ages. They have to examine patients and take their
histories, order laboratory tests, X-rays and other diagnostic procedures and consult
with other medical practitioners to evaluate patients' physical and mental health.
Prescribe medications and administer treatments. Perform minor surgery and assist
with other surgical procedures. Provide emergency care. Provide acute care
management. Inoculate and vaccinate patients. Advise patients and their families
on health care including health promotion, disease, illness and accident prevention.
Provide counselling and support to patients and their families on a wide range of
health and lifestyle issues. Perform patient advocacy role. Co-ordinate or manage
primary patient care. Provide continuous care to patients, including palliative care
support. Supervise home-care services. Report births, deaths, and contagious and
other diseases to governmental authorities. Deliver babies and provide pre-natal
and post-natal care.

6.Number or people employed in this occupation (indicate whether the number

refers to BC or Canada)
About 80, 544 people employed in Canada

7. Employment prospects:Really good because currently there is a shortage of

doctors in Canada.

8.Related Jobs (list at least 3)

1. Pharmacist
2. Nurse
3.Dentist

9. Skills or characteristics required:To be a family physician, you need to be social

and directive, you need to have a good learning ability, have to be good in science,
you need to have attention to detail, and you need to have good interpersonal and
reasoning skills.

Planning 10 Career research project

10. Disadvantages of Occupation: Long training periods in medical school and high
tuition costs. Since physicians work long hours, they usually dont have much time
to spend with their family and friends. The responsibilities that come with being a
doctor can be stressful, such as making a mistake, losing a patient, or fearing the
loss of one. Another disadvantage of being a family physician is that patients can
make lawsuits against you if theyhave been harmed or injured due to
poor medical treatment or mistaken diagnosis from a medical provider.

11. Describe how your values, skills and interests relate to this career option
I want to help contribute to the society and make it a happier place by helping
people with their health issues and concerns. I can talk to people with confidence or
without being scared and nervous, I like troubleshooting and narrowing down
problems by asking questions which is what a family has to do sometimes, I also like
science and get good grades in it so I will enjoy using my science skills to help
people and even learn new things while doing it.

12. What courses and grades are needed to enter this Occupation?
Need to have very good grades (high 90s) and appropriate interpersonal skills and
attitudes to work as medical professionals as well as experience. Need to complete
the Bachelor of Science, MD, Medical School, accredited residency training, as well
as taking multiple licensing exams, and a national exam.

13.Working conditions: Family physicians spend the majority of time in their

practice, however, they may be required to travel to hospitals to provide specific
types of patient care. Family physicians are also occasionally required to provide inhome patient care.General practitioners and family physicians generally see a large
volume of patients requiring different types of assessments, support or treatment
each day so there is a great deal of variety in a physician's work. Due to the nature
of the work, family physicians and general practitioners are exposed to infectious
diseases and physicians must be very careful while examining patients. Necessary
precautions include the use of safety equipment and clothing, as well as sterilization
or disposal of some equipment and protective clothing after use. Family physicians
and GPs must also be prepared to handle the often fragile emotional state of their
patients, and when combined with long working hours, a high volume of patients, a
diverse array of treatments administered and strict safety precautions, it can be a
stressful working environment.

Planning 10 Career research project

13.Typical hours of work:Family physicians and GPs often work irregular hours,
including nights and weekends, and may also be on-call 24 hours a day when
required to respond to emergencies. Resident physicians generally work long hours,
which could be up to 60 hours per week, however, this trend may be decreasing.

14.Describe what has influenced your choice of this occupation: I was influenced
towards this choice of occupation because I like it and I feel it is my duty to give
back to the society in all the ways I can. Also, I hope that I will be able to help treat
my parents myself, which will save them the trouble of booking appointments and
driving to see doctors and also lets them ask as many questions as they want
without a doctor telling them their time is up.

15.What are the Future Trends of this occupation: The population is growing so there
will be more family physicians and doctors employed in the future with the
assumption that the medical schools and universities that have Science Degrees
and MDs open up more spots due to the increasing population. If they dont open
up more spots, then the competition will just get much tougher since there are more
people trying to get in.

16.Go to Work Futures Website (http://www.workbc.ca/) and list 2 points of

information you felt were important and were not covered.
1. Tuition Fee (Cost of all the education required)
2. Disadvantages of the occupation

Trades Career

available through some institutions. Interprovincial Standards Red Seal certification

is available to qualified electricians through the Industry Training Authority.

2. Suggested Post-Secondary Institutions:BCIT (British Colombia Institute of

Technology)

3.Cost of Training in Canadian (full program cost for all years ): About $22,000 for
the apprenticeship course, about$3588.04 for electrical foundations course, about
$3500 for electrical engineering course, and about $120 to take the red seal exam.

4. Salary Range:About $42,000 - $72,000

5. Job Description: Interpret drawings, circuit diagrams and electrical code

specifications for wiring layouts, pull wire through walls and floors, install brackets
and hangers to support electrical equipment, and install or repair various pieces of
electrical equipment. Electricians also have to splice, join and connect wires to
fixtures and components, test the continuity of circuits to ensure that an electrical
system is safe and compatible, troubleshoot and repair faults in electrical systems,
connect electrical power to audio and visual communication equipment, signal
devices and heating and cooling systems, and run preventive maintenance
programs and keep maintenance records
6. Number or people employed in this occupation (indicate whether the number
refers to BC or Canada): 12, 500 workers in BC

7. Employment prospects:Okay, however, the trades industry in Canada is

growing very fast so it will become harder to find work in the future.

8. Related Jobs (list at least 3)

1. Aerospace engineer
2. Network engineer
3. Electronics engineer

Planning 10 Career research project

9. Skills or characteristics required:To be an electrician, you have to be detail

oriented, you have to have numerical ability, motor coordination, manual dexterity,
spatial perception, you have to be good with your hands, and you will need good
social skills as you will have to talk with clients or work with other people.
10. Disadvantages of Occupation: There is lots of personal safety risks included in
this job which is a disadvantage. Risks include: working at high heights which can
result in falls, and working with wires and charges which can result in shocks from
the electricity. Also another disadvantage is that the trades industry is growing fast
in BC, so there will be many more electricians later on which will make it tougher to
get work.

11. Describe how your values, skills and interests relate to this career option: I
have good hands and can work very well with tools and other equipment. I also
know some things about electrical work as I have helped my dad install wires in and
around our house. I also find this work very interesting as you can learn new things
while doing your work. I value hard work, so when I work hard on something, like
wiring a building, I feel proud after I have finished and am looking back on my work.
Therefore, this job would give me satisfaction.
12. What courses and grades are needed to enter this Occupation? You need to
have fairly good grades in the electrical courses you would take in university which
would include electrical engineering and electrical foundations. You have to have
lots of experience, a certificate of qualification from the Industry Training Authority,
and the red seal.

13.Working conditions: Work is usually indoors and the work areas can often be
noisy and dirty. Work may take place from heights or in confined spaces, and may
require lifting of heavy objects. Safety is a big concern and precautions are followed
to reduce the risks of injury from accidental electric shocks and falls from heights.
13.Typical hours of work:Electricians typically work 40 hours per week and may
occasionally work overtime.

14.Describe what has influenced your choice of this occupation: I was influenced by
that fact that I would get to use my hands to fix, repair, and install things such as
wires which I enjoy and have some experience with already.

Planning 10 Career research project

15.What are the Future Trends of this occupation: There will be many more
electricians in the future because the trades industry is growing very fast in BC
which will make competition to get work harder later on.

Narrow your career list to a few good choices. Each career should have a detailed list of
skills needed, as well as degrees, diplomas, certificates, volunteer or relevant experience
etc. Next, research the schools or organizations that offer the particular program of study
needed. Find out the entrance requirements or prerequisites. Finally, call prospective
employers within the industry you are researching and ask what they look for in their
employees and if they prefer to hire students from a particular school or program.
