Course Description:
This course introduces general chemistry and some of its history. It visualizing and explains
chemical models first at the macroscopic level and then from a molecular point of view. The
problem-solving approach, based on a four-step method is introduced and employed throughout
the course. Applying ideas to the real world for students, who may enter one of numerous
chemistry-related fields. The use of molecular orbitals which will provide the background to all
chemistry discipline. Comprehensive description of the basic principles and concepts in
chemistry including the physical and chemical properties, stoichiometry of formulas and
equations, atomic structure and quantum theory, atomic masses, mole, molecules and their
shapes, chemical reactions, models of chemical bonding, acids and bases, gases,
thermochemistry, changes of state and intermolecular forces, acids- base equilibria, buffers
,physical properties of colloids and solutions, thermodynamics, chemical kinetics and the rate
law and various laws in chemistry will also be covered.

Course Objectives:
1.

The students will acquire knowledge of how to carry out scientific measurements using
proper units and report the results with proper number of significant figures.
2.
Understanding various basic laws, like law of conservation of mass, law of definite
proportions, law of multiple proportions, and applying them appropriately.
3.
Realizing the concept of the mole, molecular formula, molecular mass, formula mass,
and utilizing these concepts in stoichiometric calculations and balancing chemical
reactions.
4.
Acquiring a working knowledge and application of the gas laws, and understanding the
molecular explanation of the basic quantities in these laws.
5.
Obtaining basic thermochemical knowledge on energy transformations associated with
chemical reactions.
6.
Relating the periodicity of elements and their chemical properties like electornegativity,
electron affinity, atomic size, and ionization potentials to the electronic configurations of
the elements.
7.
Understanding the concepts of chemical bonding and molecular structure, and its relation
to the shapes and properties of molecules.
8.
Analyzing the interconversions of states of matter, the properties of each state, and the
type of intermolecular forces involved.
9.
Distinguish between colloids and solutions and understand the various factors that affect
solubility and miscibility of liquids
10. Aquire the ability to convert various concentration units
11. Enable the student to calculate and decide whether a certain reaction is spontaneous or not
using standard enthalpy change ,temperature and entropy or by using Gibbs free energy
change.
12.
Enable the student to determine the order of a reaction and to calculate its half-life
