AIMS AND OBJECTIVE

Aims
Hypertension is a major public health problem with serious medical and financial
consequences. Barriers to successful conventional pharmacological treatment includes
side effects and patients non-compliance herbal or Unani treatment could be an alternate
and complimentary therapy that requires evidence based approach to control blood
pressure. It is the aim of present investigation that herbal or Unani medicine be evaluated
as an alternate therapy and pilot randomized clinical treat designed together preliminary
data regarding its efficacy for the control of essential hypertension. The aim of study on
essential hypertension will be:

1. To perform blood pressure screening program in the urban and rural setting in
Karachi.

2. To examine and repeat blood pressure measurement in case of elevated systolic


and / or diastolic readings and to determine the prevalence of essential
hypertension as in the megalopolis Karachi.

3. To treat and follow up essential hypertensive patients treat with three groups of
therapies such as herbal coded formulations, herbal proprietary products and their
comparison with standard conventional therapy.

Objective
1. The objectives of research, as based on essential hypertension, is to accurately
diagnose hypertension, to improve blood pressure control with Unani or herbal as
well as allopathic treatment in order to comparatively determine the efficacy of
subjective analysis.

2. The target population will be adults both sex of age 18 year and older up to 65
years of age (non-pregnant).

3. The diagnosis and initial evaluation will include blood pressure measurements,
history and physical examination, laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures (eg.
Complete Blood Count, Urine D/R, Lipid Profile, Blood glucose, Kidney
Function Test:BUN/Urea/Creatinin, Liver Function Test: ALT/AST/bilirubin,
Alkaline Phosphatase, Thyroid Stimulating Hormones (TSH) and electrolytes
(Sodium, Potassium, Chlorine, Bicarbonates.

4. Treatment management will be focused on life cycle modification, such as stress


reduction, dietary changes, and tobacco avoidance.

5. Drug therapy as indicated will include the coded unani or herbal formulations,
proprietary products of herbal manufacturing organization and there in
comparison with authentic allopathic medication.

6. The major out analysis will be based on statistical parameters eg. Reduction in
blood pressure, treatment cost and side effects of all forms of medications as
utilized in this research study.

7. The level of evidence will be randomized control trials and the conclusion will be
based on prospective randomized clinical trials, the parameters of inclusion and
exclusion will be determined to estimate the effect size and level of evidence.
