Aerodynamics MSc
An understanding of the aerodynamic behaviour of aircraft, coupled with knowledge of flow control, flow assessment and simulation techniques will be
essential for the design of the next generation of manned aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). You will begin the year with an intensive period of
flight testing on board the NFLC's Jetstream aircraft. This forms the backdrop for the taught components that cover aerodynamic performance,
aerodynamic design and simulation using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). There is a significant degree of choice in modules covering both
aerodynamics and flight dynamics enabling you to form your own portfolio of skills and expertise. There is an option to take modules related to the
increasingly important areas of CFD and Experimental Methods. Such knowledge can be applied to address technical challenges posed by a wide range
of aerial vehicles ranging from micro-UAVs to large transport aircraft. The Aerodynamics specialisation is intended for those wishing to develop a career in
flight physics and specifically in the fields of flow simulation, flow measurement and flow control.

Course structure

Future Career

There are three elements to this course - a taught component, a group

flight test and an individual research project. Two compulsory modules
provide an initial introduction to aerospace dynamics and are used to
provide grounding for the group flight test.

A wide range of career paths within aerospace and the military seek
graduates with these skills. Increasingly, these are in demand in other
areas including automotive, environmental, energy and medicine.
Recent graduates have found positions in the aerospace, automotive
and related sectors. Employers include; Airbus; BAE Systems; Onera;
QinetiQ; Rolls Royce; Snecma; Thales; Selex ES; MBDA; Jaguar Land
Rover; Tata; and Triumph Motorcycles.

Individual project
You will select your individual research project from a wide range of
topics offered during the first teaching period. The project is carried out
under the guidance of an academic staff member, who acts as your
supervisor. The individual project often provides an opportunity to
collaborate with industry.

Group project
You will participate in the Group Flight Test Report. This involves a
series of flight tests in the NFLC Jetstream Flying Laboratory which are
undertaken, reported and presented as a group exercise. This enables
you to experience the application of specialist skills within a flight test
environment and apply them to a collaborative assessment, technical
report and presentation.

Aerospace Dynamics MSc

The aerospace industry in the UK is the largest in the world, outside of the USA. Aerodynamics and Flight Dynamics will remain a key element in the
development of future aircraft and in reducing civil transport environmental issues resulting in these areas making significant contributions to the next
generation of aircraft configurations. In the military arena, aerodynamic modelling and flight dynamics play an important role in the design and
development of combat aircraft and unmanned air vehicles (UAVs). The continuing search for aerodynamic refinement and performance optimisation for
the next generation of aircraft and surface vehicles creates the need for specialist knowledge of fluid flow behaviour. The MSc in Aerospace Dynamics
aims to provide both fundamental and applied knowledge applicable to the understanding of air flows, vehicle dynamics and control and methods for
computational modelling. The course will provide students with practical experience in the measurement, analysis, modelling and simulation of airflows
and aerial vehicles. The course is suitable for students with an interest in aerodynamic design, flow control, flow measurement, flight dynamics and flight

Courses

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

MSc/PgDip/PgCert
What do the aviation, space, automotive, chemical and process, atmospheric sciences, energy, medicine and environment industries all have in common?
The answer is fluid flows. Our atmosphere is fluid, our environment is, to a certain extent, fluid and even our bodies are composed primarily of fluid.
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is an inherently interdisciplinary branch of science which has an extremely broad spectrum of applications. There has
been considerable growth in the development and application of CFD in all aspects of fluid dynamics. CFD has become a standard modelling tool widely
utilised within industry. In a recent survey by Technavio, the global market for CFD is projected to grow at 16.5% per year due to increasing computational
power and integration of CFD into the design process. Although distributed, this industry is worth billions of pounds. As a consequence there is a
considerable demand for specialists in the subject which is not covered in sufficient detail at undergraduate level. This course covers a broad range of
fields from aerospace, turbomachinery, multiphase flow and heat transfer, to microflows, environmental flows and fluid-structure interaction problems. This
course is suitable for graduates and professional engineers looking to kick-start an industrial or research career in the rapidly growing field of CFD.

Course structure

Future Career

The course comprises a taught component of 11 compulsory modules

and 5 optional application modules (from a suite of 7), plus an individual
research project. The course is designed to reflect the broad range of
CFD applications by providing a range of optional modules.

Strategic industrial links ensure that the course meets the needs of the
organisations competing within the computational sector therefore
making our graduates some of the most desirable in the world for
companies to recruit.
An increasing demand for CFD specialists with practical, technical
knowledge within a wide range of sectors has seen our graduates
employed by leading companies including Alstom, BAE Systems,
Rolls-Royce, European Space Agency and Bentley. Many of our
graduates go on to complete PhD degrees, with thesis topics often
supplied by companies with a view to employment after graduation - an
approach that is being actively encouraged by a growing number of
industries.

Individual project
The individual research project is undertaken during May and
September. It allows you to develop specialist skills by taking the theory
from the taught modules and combining it with practical application. The
research project gives you the opportunity to produce a detailed piece
of work either in close collaboration with industry, or on a particular topic
which you are passionate about.

Group project
There is no group project in the MSc in Computational Fluid Dynamics.

Impressive international rankings for the course of study and its reputation as the
only postgraduate institution in the EU attracted me to Cranfield University. Also,
its collaboration with industry was an important factor. It helped me to develop my
knowledge of business operations and how this interfaces with engineering expertise.
I now have options in the manufacturing and the energy industries, both of which are my
preferred career choices. I found the international environment, as well as the access to

Here to support you

The University values its innovative, ambitious and diverse student
community. We ensure all students have access to support,
helping them achieve their potential during their time with us.

Disability and learning support

Learning Support Officers act as the initial point of contact within each School to provide
support for disabled students. They work closely with the University Diversity Manager to
provide advice and guidance to students and academic staff on all aspects of disability
and learning support.
Students who have declared their disability will be contacted at or prior to registration to
arrange a meeting to discuss any support required. Making us aware when you apply
allows us to plan to support you and this information is kept confidentially, separate to
your main application.

Dyslexia awareness
Every year there are several students newly diagnosed with dyslexia.
We urge you to let us know if you are dyslexic (or suspect you may be) at the earliest
opportunity, as the University has a well-established system of support for all students
and you may be surprised at the difference this can make to your studies.
For some UK-based students a Disabled Students Allowance may be available.
However, applications can take time to be processed by the relevant authorities.
Therefore, if you have already been assessed as having dyslexia or other specific
learning difficulties we advise that you bring a copy of your latest assessment to
registration, so that the appropriate support can be implemented immediately.

We offer a range of
disability and learning
support services including:
advice and guidance to students
on support available

Mental health awareness

organising dyslexia screening tests,

assessments and support with

needs assessments appointments

Student life can be stressful; you will be studying hard and your expectations will be very
high. In addition, you will be in a new environment, perhaps a new country and probably
away from your family and friends.

other academic adjustments (upon

appropriate resources. The Student Advisers offer advice and guidance on a wide range
of issues including; how to meet academic challenges, specific support needs (e.g.
childcare, disability), and general advice on managing day-to-day finances.
Our dedicated and experienced student advisers work with staff across both our
Cranfield and Shrivenham locations. Working with the counselling services, support
networks within and outside of the University, they ensure all students have access to

Finance and funding

A Cranfield degree is an investment in your future career. As a student

you will need to make sure you can cover the costs of tuition fees,
accommodation and other general living expense.
We understand this is a significant financial commitment and are
here to help you through this stage of the application process,
providing advice and information on all of the following.

Tuition fees and fee status

Tuition fees vary depending on the course and qualification level
(MSc, PgDip, PgCert) you intend to study. Our fees are reviewed
annually and can be viewed online on individual course pages.
You will be required to pay your fees in advance of starting your
course or at registration. Fees for courses of longer than a year
are paid annually.

Cost of living
In addition to your tuition fees you will also need to budget for
accommodation (on- or off-campus) and other living expenses
such as utility bills, food and books. We would strongly advise
that a single student allows between 800 to 1050 per month,
1500 a month for couples and more for those with children.
At www.cranfield.ac.uk/cost-of-living there is further guidance on
living costs and a budget calculator for international students.

Working during your studies

A Cranfield degree is intense while our part-time programmes
have been developed to cater for those wishing to combine work
and study, our full-time programmes are designed and delivered
in a way that requires your full attention, so part-time work is not
recommended.

Funding Finder
To make the task of finding suitable funding easier we have
introduced a Funding Finder tool on our website. You can apply
filters to our large database of both University and external
sources of funding, including full- or part-time, taught or research
and by fee status. Visit www.cranfield.ac.uk/fundingfinder

Funding advice
In addition to our Funding Finder we have advice on other
schemes, contacts and guides releveant to both UK/EU and
international students. This includes information on Professional
and Career Development Loans, Hotcourses, Postgraduate
Studentships, Grants Online, UKCISA and more.
Visit www.cranfield.ac.uk/funding

As soon as I made up my mind to pursue my Masters at Cranfield University I

was actively seeking funding. It was a challenge, but signing up for the Cranfield
Postgraduate Loan Scheme was ideal for me as many other commercial banks had
given me significantly more expensive quotes.
For the past five months or so I have been involved in the group design project.
The Critical Design Review of this project involved presenting the designed product to
engineers and experts from the Aerospace industry. This has been the major highlight
so far as you get to see what the experts from industry think of the design
and importantly get feedback based on the real world problem we are facing.

UK and EU students entering
postgraduate study and is intended
to attract those who may not
otherwise progress to this level
because of financial constraints.
