Module 3 was a learning inquiry into 3 of my students. My students varied a bit in
the types of lessons they liked and felt they benefited the most from. This meant I needed to adjust my style a bit and to make sure I incorporated a few different learning and teaching approaches. The module included a reflection section which Ive included here: For me, the most powerful assessment tool is my personal observation of each students growth through the unit. It is important to use this in combination with data gathered from classroom assessments to make a judgement of where each student is in relation to the NZ curriculum and to inform planning. From observations Judd has pushed himself and done quite well in this unit. He has promptly completed any homework when asked and seems to be progressing well. His Easttle pre and post measurement test indicates he has moved from 2P to 2A on the overall level. In the pre-test his scores were 2P overall, 2A surface level, and 2P measurement. In his post-test he scored 2A overall, 3B surface level, and 2A measurement. He did not get a deep level score on either test. So Judd has moved 1 sub-level. This is ok, I would like to have helped him move a bit further but the timeframe was short and I still have some time left at the time of writing. Both tests Judd had access to an LSA reader/writer. For future units I would like to give Judd more individual time with mathletics as he enjoys this and I believe it helps him to progress really well. One other factor was that Judd has missed a large number of lessons during this period due to illness, runner duties, literacy and drumming tutorials. Christinas level of engagement has really improved during this period. I think more than anything it has been the one on one talks and feedback that has led to this. Her ability with measurement has been improving very rapidly, which is clear to see in her day to day class work. Her pre-test Easttle scores were overall 2A, surface 2B, deep 3P, measurement 2A. In her post-test she got overall 3A, surface 3P, deep 4B, and measurement 3A. This is good and shows an improvement of 1 level. I think her engagement and effort so far in this unit is by far the main factor leading to this result. It is interesting that in both tests her deep score is higher than her surface level score. For me to remain effective with Christina I need to maintain regular feedback/feedforward and relate this to her progress in relation to her goals. Hayden has been a bit tricky. He seems to enjoy pretending to work while doing something else and treats it like a game. His pre-test results where overall 2A, surface 3B, no deep score, and measurement 2A. His post-test results where overall 3P, surface 3A, deep 3B, and measurement 3P. So overall this is an improvement of two sub-levels. It is good that he is showing progress but from observations of his effort I know he could be doing better. Also it is good that he got a deep score in this test as he didnt in the first test. I tried a lesson with this class where I had the desks facing the walls so I could stand in the middle and see what each student was doing. It was effective for class management and keeping students on task but they didnt like it very much so I didnt do it again. I think Hayden needs something like this as he is a bit immature and takes the opportunity to muck around whenever he can. I think I will try seating him where I can see his screen easily and see how this goes. Confidence scores where Christina 2.8 3.0, Judd 3.2 2.8, Hayden 2.3 2.3. So not much change, Christina is slightly more confident with measurement, Judd is slightly less confident maybe he is comparing himself to other students in the class, and Hayden remained the same. The dates of the tests where 8 or 9/8/16 for the pretest and 2 or 5/9/16 for the post-test (depending which students where present for each day). So its a fairly short period of roughly a month but in general these students and the class are showing progress. I will compare these results with the end of unit paper test and hopefully see further progress. I will also do and end of unit evaluation form to get some student voice on what worked well, what not so well. What they did or didnt enjoy and how this could be improved to benefit their learning in the future. Students learn most effectively when they develop the ability to stand back from the information or ideas that they have engaged with and think about these objectively. Reflective learners assimilate new learning, relate it to what they already know, adapt it for their own purposes, and translate thought into action.
