Rhetorical Knowledge
Rhetorical Knowledge is a culmination of the choices writers make in response to the
needs of different audiences and rhetorical situations. It is an understanding of an
audience of a text. Through expanding on personal writing styles, students learn to
adapt to a variety of subjects, purposes, and backgrounds.
Through engaging with a range of materials, students should be able to write in
several genres, catering towards the needs of intended readers.
Students should gain experience reading and writing in several genres, and
understand how they are shaped.
Students should be adaptable and open-minded towards exploring new ideas.
Critical Reading
Critical Reading is the ability to analyze and comprehend writing. Writers think critically
about the sources/materials they use, and use foundations to advance ones writing.
Students should be able to:
Use reading for curiosity
Students should be able to recognize bias and credibility in different sources.
Students should be mindful of arguments versus evidence.
Composing Process
Students should learn how to create, develop, and finish projects in a manner that is
helpful and unique to them.
Students should be able to understand and utilize the revision process.
Students should learn how to use criticism and praise to better their writing.
Students should learn how to engage with and summarize source material.
Knowledge of Conventions

Rules that define genre, such as on spelling, citation, etc., and shape views on what is
right with genre. These rules Influence content, style, organization, graphics and
document design. Students should be able to
Differentiate between variations in conventions by genre
Discover why genre conventions vary
Use the values of intellectual property (doing your own work), motivates
documentation conventions to use citation conventions in their own work
Learn about linguistic structures through practice of writing and editing

Critical Reflection
Critical reflection is a writers ability to understand what he or she is thinking, and the
reason for those thoughts. A writer who can critically reflect will take a readers feedback
as constructive criticism and be able to explain the choices they made within that text in
terms of composition.
