Alexander the Second sought to modernize Russias social, economic and
military system in order to preserve the strength of his autocratic rule. The
economic and military backwardness of the Russian empire threatened its
position as a world power, and therefore demonstrated the need to liberalise
certain aspects of Russian society in order for it to survive. Furthermore, liberal
reforms did not extend to that of Russias existing political structure and in so,
indicate Alexanders unwillingness to abandon his power.
