manmade.ThelegendsaswellasArcheologicalstudiesrevealthatthefirst
signsofhumaninhabitantsinSriLankadatebacktotheaprimitiveage,about
1,750,000yearsagoandthebridge&laqnosageisalsoalmostequivalent.

Thisinformationisacrucialaspectforaninsightintothemysteriouslegend
calledRamayana,whichwassupposedtohavetakenplaceintredhayuga
(morethan1,700,000yearsago).

Inthisepic,thereisamentioningaboutabridge,whichwasbuiltbetween
Rameshwaram(India)andSrilankancoastunderthesupervisionofadynamic
andinvinciblefigurecalledRamawhoissupposedtobetheincarnationofthe
supreme.

Thisinformationmaynotbeofmuchimportancetothearcheologistswhoare
interestedinexploringtheoriginsofman,butitissuretoopenthespiritual
gatesofthepeopleoftheworldtohavecometoknowanancienthistorylinked
totheIndianmythology.

ThePersonalityofGodheadSriRamaassumedtheformofahumanbeingand
appearedontheearthforthepurposeofdoingsomepleasingworkforthe
demigods,ortheadministrativepersonalities,tomaintaintheorderofthe
universe.SometimesgreatdemonsandatheistslikeRavanaandHiranyakasipu
andmanyothersbecomeveryfamousduetoadvancingmaterialcivilizationby
thehelpofmaterialscienceandotheractivities,withaspiritofchallengingthe
establishedorderoftheLord.Forexample,theattempttoflytootherplanets
bymaterialmeansisachallengetotheestablishedorder.Theconditionsof
eachandeveryplanetaredifferent,anddifferentclassesofhumanbeingsare
accommodatedthereforparticularpurposesmentionedinthecodesofthe
Lord.But,puffedupbytinysuccessinmaterialadvancement,sometimesthe
godlessmaterialistschallengetheexistenceofGod.Ravanawasoneofthem,
andhewantedtodeportordinarymentotheplanetofIndra(heaven)by
materialmeanswithoutconsiderationofthenecessaryqualifications.He
wantedastaircasetobebuiltupdirectlyreachingtheheavenlyplanetsothat
peoplemightnotberequiredtoundergotheroutineofpiousworknecessaryto
enterthatplanet.Healsowantedtoperformotheractsagainsttheestablished
ruleoftheLord.HeevenchallengedtheauthorityofSriRama,thePersonality
ofGodhead,andkidnappedHiswife,Sita.OfcourseLordRamacameto
chastisethisatheist,answeringtheprayeranddesireofthedemigods.He
thereforetookupthechallengeofRavana,andthecompleteactivityisthe
subjectmatterofthe"Ramayana".BecauseLordRamachandrawasthe
PersonalityofGodhead,Heexhibitedsuperhumanactivitieswhichnohuman
being,includingthemateriallyadvancedRavana,couldperform.Lord
RamacandrapreparedaroyalroadontheIndianOceanwithstonesthatfloated
onthewater.Themodernscientistshavedoneresearchintheareaof
weightlessness,butitisnotpossibletobringinweightlessnessanywhereand
everywhere.ButbecauseweightlessnessisthecreationoftheLordbywhich
Hecanmakethegiganticplanetsflyandfloatintheair,Hemadethestones
evenwithinthisearthtobeweightlessandpreparedastonebridgeonthesea
withoutanysupportingpillar.ThatisthedisplayofthepowerofGod.

Here'stheaccountfromthe"Ramayana"ofSageValmiki:

"AtRama'scommand,thoselionsamongthemonkeysenteredthemighty
forestwithalacrityinhundredsandthousandsoneverysideandthoseleaders
onthesimiantribes,tearinguptherocks,whichinsizetheyresembled,andthe
treesalsodraggedthemtotheseaandtheycoveredtheoceanwithSala,
Ashvararna,(listoftreenames).Thoseforemostmonkeystransportedthose
trees,withorwithoutroots,bearingthemlikesomanystandardsofIndra(the
kingofheaven)andtheyheaped(listoftreenames)hereandthere.Withthe
aidofmechanicaldevices,thosepowerfulcolossidugupstonesasbigas
elephantsandrocks,andthewatersuddenlyspoutedintotheaironlytofall
instantly.Thereafterthosemonkeyschurneduptheseabyrushingintoitonall
sidespullingonthechains.

"ThatimmensecausewayconstructedbyNalainthebosomoftheseawasbuilt
bythearmsofthosemonkeysofformidableexploitsanditextendedovera
hundredleagues.

"Somebroughttrunksoftreesandotherssetthemupitwasbyhundredsand
thousandsthatthosemonkeys,likeuntogiants,madeuseofreeds,logsand
blossomingtreestoconstructthatbridge,rushinghitherandthitherwithblocks
ofstoneresemblingmountainsorthepeaksofcrags,which,flungintothesea,
fellwitharesoundingcrash.

"Thefirstdaythosemonkeysresemblingelephants,orimmenseenergy,fullof
highspiritsandexceedinglymerry,erectedfourteenleaguesofmasonry.The
secondday,thosehighlyactivemonkeysofformidablestaturesetuptwenty
leagues.Bestirringthemselves,thosegiantsthrewtwentyoneleaguesof
structureovertheoceanonthethirddayandonthefourth,workingfeverishly,
theybuiltuptwentytwoleaguesinextent.Thefifthday,thosemonkeys,

"ThatfortunateandvaliantsonofVishvakarma(architectofthedemigods),
leaderofthemonkeys,constructedacausewayworthyofhissireoverthe
oceanandthatbridgeerectedbyNalaoverthesea,thehauntofwhales,
dazzlinginitsperfectionandsplendor,wasliketheconstellationofSvatiin
space.

"Thenthegods,Gandharvas,Siddhas(livingbeingssuperiortohumans)and
supremeRishis(greatsages)assembledinthesky,eagertoseethat
masterpiece,andthegodsandGandharvasgazedonthatcauseway,sodifficult
ofconstruction,thatwastenleaguesinwidthandahundredinlengthbuiltby
Nala.

"Thosemonkeysthereafterdived,swamandshoutedatthesightofthat
unimaginablemarvelthatwasalmostinconceivableandcausedonetotremble!
Andallbeingsbeheldthatcausewaythrownovertheoceanandbyhundreds
andthousandsofkotis(millions),thosemonkeys,fullofvalor,havingbuiltthat
bridgeovertheimmenserepositoryofwaters,reachedtheoppositeshore.

"Vast,wellconstructed,magnificentwithitswonderfulpavedfloor,solidly
cemented,thatgreatcausewaylikeuntoalinetracedonthewaves,resembled
thepartingofawoman'shair.

"MeanwhileBibishana(brotherofRavanawhojoinedRama),mace(club)in
hand,heldhimselfreadyathispostwithhiscompanionsincaseofanenemy
attack.ThereafterSugrivaaddressedRama,whowasvaliantbynature,saying
"MountontheshouldersofHanumanandLaxmana(brotherofRama)onthose
ofAngada.OHero,vastisthisocean,theabodeofwhalesthosetwomonkeys
whofreelyrangetheskywilltransportyouboth."

center,somethrewthemselvesintothewaves,somesprangintothesky,others
marchedonthebridge,somerangedthroughspacelikebirds,andtheterrific
tumultofthetramplingofthatformidablearmyofmonkeysdrownedtheroar
oftheocean.

"WhenthosesimiantroopshadpassedovertheseabythegraceofNala's
causeway,thekingorderedthemtocampontheshorewhichaboundedin
roots,fruitsandwater.

Atthesightofthatmasterpiecethathadmaterializedunderthecommandof
Raghava(anothernameofLordRama),despitethedifficulties,thegods,who
haddrawnnearwiththeSiddhasandCharanasasalsothegreatRishis,
anointedRamainsecretthere,withwaterformthesea,andsaid:"Mayestthou
bevictoriousoverthyfoes,OThou,whoareaGodamongmen!DoThourule
overtheearthandtheseaeternally!"

Thusinvariousauspiciouswords,didtheyacclaimRamainthemidstofthe
homageofferedtohimbytheBrahmins."

ahumanbeingcouldkillRavana,duetocertainbenedictionsthathehadbeen
given.

ordinarymonkeys.Theywereinfactgreatlypowerfuldemigodswhoappeared
onthisearthtoassisttheLordinhispastimeofsubduingthisatheisticdemon,
Ravana.
