SHUNT COMPENSATION

Reactive Power
Required at the
mid point

2 V2

11/1/2016

The mid-point shunt compensation

can significantly increase the
transmittable power at the expense
of a rapidly increasing reactive
power demand on the mid-point
compensator.

COMPENSATION SCHEMES
SERIES COMPENSATION

The transmittable power rapidly

increases with the degree of
series compensation k.
Similarly, the reactive power
supplied by the series capacitor
also increases sharply with k

PHASE ANGLE CONTROL

Theoretically it makes it possible to

keep the power at its maximum value
at any angle in the range < <
/2+ by, in effect, shifting the P
versus curve to the right.

TRADITIONAL COMPENSATING DEVICES

Shunt Capacitors
Series Capacitors
Mechanically operated Phase
shifters
A shunt connected excitation transformer
with a mechanical tap-changer and a
series connected insertion transformer are
often employed in transmission systems to
control steady- state power flow.

APPLICATION OF FACTS IN
POWER SYSTEM OPERATION

To increase power transfer capacity of transmission line.

To decrease the power generation capacity and fuel cost.
To control the power flow as ordered by increasing the
loading capability of lines to their thermal capabilities,
including short term and seasonal time periods.
To increase the system security through raising the
transient stability limit.

11/1/2016

Dr.M.P.Selvan,NITTiruchirappalli

23

APPLICATION OF FACTS IN
POWER SYSTEM OPERATION
To provide greater flexibility in siting new generation.
To reduce reactive power flows, thus allowing the lines to
carry more active power.
To increase utilization of lowest cost generation.
To provide secure tie line connections to neighboring
utilities and regions thereby decreasing overall
generation reserve requirements on both sides.
