2.3.4 SF6 Gas
SF6 gas weights approximately 5.5 times as much as air.
Being colorless, odorless, and inert in its ordinary condition, this gas is highly stable.
This gas is liquefied at -62C under atmospheric and at 0C under pressure of 11.7bar
respectively
Since puffer type CB uses gas at a pressure of 6.0bar, liquefaction temperature of the
gas is as low as about -30C, requiring no heater. Further since the coefficient of heat
transfer of SF6 gas exceeds that of air under the same condition approximately by a
factor of 2.5, any temperature rise is case of energizing is low compared with the case
of using air.
Also, although it varies depending upon the shape of eletrode, the dieletric strength of
SF6 gas in a uniform electric field is 2.5 to 3 times as great as that of the atmosphere,
becoming equal to that of insulating oil at an approximate pressure of 2 bar(at20C).
Being considerably great in electron adhering capability, SF6 gas displays excellent are
extinguishing performance.

55

2.3 Others
Others CT / VT / Insulator and etc.
2.3.4 SF6 Gas
Regarding the poisonous characteristic of SF6, the result of various experiments
conducted on white rabbits and mice revealed that SF6 gas itself is inert and produces
no poisonous effect on the human body.
Concerning tests on its poisonous character, it is stipulated that mice shall be able to
withstand without hindrance the atmosphere of gaseous mixture consisting of 75% SF6
and 25% oxygen for a period of 14 to 16 hours.
Decomposition products produced by arc discharge(HF, SF, SF, S2Fetc) are harmful.
Therefore, necessary steps have been taken by HYOSUNG CORPORATION to minimize
these products, such as controlling moisture in the interrupter to 150 ppm by volume or
less (moisture in the atmosphere is approximately 20,000 ppm by volume) and the
absorption of decomposition products by absorbent (synthetic zeolite).
Although a small amount of powdery sulfide and fluoride is found in the container inside
the tank after breaking a large current, the above powder has produced no harmful effect
on the human body so far. It is advisable, however, to always wear a mask and gloves for
a detailed inspection or contact replacement.

Descriptions items

Inspection procedure

Gas pressure

Read pressure on gas pressure gauge Record the gas pressure, ambient
temperature. If any SF6 gas leakage is detected, supply the SF6 gas
according to the procedure described in before the gas pressure drops
to the alarm pressure.

Operation counter

Check and record the number of operation.

Space heater

When the check the operations of heaters as bellows humidity is high, the
temperature drops sharply or the ambient temperature is low, the heater
in the control cubicle is operated to turn on automatically.

Closing spring

Check that charged / discharged indicator shows charged.

Others

Check if abnormal noise occurring.
