(a) an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering: The content of the subjects,
in-class exercises, and exams require knowledge of complex numbers, algebra, geometrics,
differential equations, statistics, physics, and communications to successfully complete the course.
(b) an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data: The class will
be implemented with three main approaches for efficient knowledge transfer: developing solid
understanding of fundamentals, analyzing main components of optical fiber communications, and
integrating each functionality to and design and develop an optical communication link.
(c) an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints
such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and
sustainability: The class will discuss how an efficient communication system has huge economic
impact on society and how it is manufactured.
(d) an ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams: The class itself is pretty much multidisciplinary. It
requires knowledge of various disciplines such as mathematics, physics, device physics,
communication, manufacturing, and engineering.
(e) an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems: Students will be trained to identify and
analyze problems, convert the problem into mathematical representations or certain format, and solve
the problem using diverse resources including mathematical softwares and computers.
(f) an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility:
(g) an ability to communicate effectively: To develop students communication skill, students will be
encouraged to participate in both in-class and outside class discussion with the instructor and
classmates.
(h) the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global,
economic, environmental, and societal context:
(i) a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning: To follow up the endless
advance in technology, the importance of life-long education will be emphasized.
(j) a knowledge of contemporary issues: Students will be trained in contemporary issues in optical fiber
communications. They will be asked to search the advance of the technology based recent products in
market, journals, worldwide websites, and private communications.
Cheating Policy and Penalty for Cheating: The students should not copy each others reports. During
examination times no talking and passing papers or other items among the students will be allowed. The
instructor will give an overall grade of F (Fail) to a student if that student is caught with any kind of
cheating activity. The University defines cheating as intentionally using or attempting to use, or
intentionally providing or attempting to provide, unauthorized materials, information, or assistance in any
academic exercise. This includes any group efforts on assignments or exams unless specifically
approved by the professor for that assignment/exam. Evidence of fabrication or plagiarism, as defined by
the University in its brochure Academic Integrity, will also result in downgrading for the course.
STUDENTS WHO CHEAT ON ANY ASSIGNMENT OR DURING ANY EXAMINATION WILL BE
ASSIGNED A FAILING GRADE FOR THE COURSE.
Therefore avoid all appearance of improper behavior! Students who witness cheating should report the
incident to the instructor as soon as possible.
Academic dishonesty ... tends to compromise the academic integrity of the institution or subvert the
education process. All forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited at Wayne State University, as
outlined in the Student Due Process Policy. -- from Academic Integrity: Important Information for Faculty
and Students
