HirShabelle state announces commencement of Lower House
elections
Voting to elect HirShabelle state representatives to Somalias Lower
House of the federal parliament will commence Wednesday, the
State-level Indirect Electoral Implementation Team (SIEIT) said
today.
Thirteen seats will be filled in the first round of elections, SIEIT
Spokesperson Osman Baarey said.
We are on our third day of preparation for the electoral process. We
are prepping the delegates; we are working on their accreditation
now. We want to accelerate the process, Baarey said.
HirShabelle was the last regional administration to be formed under
Somalias federalism process. The state concluded Upper House
elections last week and has been registering delegates for its Lower
House vote.
Mohamed Ahmed Hussein, an elder said: This is a win for us.
HirShabelle was the last region to be formed and many people
thought this was not possible in such short time.
At least one womens rights group also welcomed the
announcement.
As the National Womens Organization we are happy that the quota
for women is being achieved here, Billan Bille Mohamud, a resident
of Jowhar and a member of the womens caucus said.
