ABSTRACT
Preventive maintenance of electric derive systems with induction motors
involves monitoring of their operation for detection of abnormal electrical and
mechanical conditions that indicate, or may lead to, a failure of the system.
The monitoring of the electrical machines can significantly reduce the costs
of maintenance by allowing the early detection of faults, which would be
expensive to repair. This paper study the effects of induction motors rotor
fault on the motor terminal quantities (Current, Voltage) using Fast Fourier
Transform (FFT) based Power spectrum. This technique utilizes the results of
spectral analysis of the stator current. Reliable interpretation of the spectra is
difficult, since distortions of the current waveform caused by the
abnormalities in the derive system are usually minute. This paper presents an
experimental study to diagnose the rotor fault by monitoring of stator current.
In the present investigation, the frequency signature of rotor fault is well

identified using Power Spectrum leading to better interpretation of the motor

current spectra. Power spectrum is obtained from Virtual Instrument. The
Virtual Instrument was build up by programming in LabVIEW 8.2. The
experiments were conducted on three phase 0.5 hp, 415V induction motor.
The rotor faults are replicated in the laboratory. The results obtained from
laboratory experiments signify that the proposed technique is a reliable tool
for diagnosis of rotor fault of induction motor.
