(4) The power return and signal ground are strapped together with a jumper located on
motherboard CCA A3.
(5) The input power filter, the DC/DC converter, and the power valid monitor are
described in the following paragraphs.
(a) Input Power Filter
1

The input filter circuitry is shown on Figure 2002, sheet 1, on the input side
of the DC/DC converter. This circuitry decreases the electromagnetic
interference (EMI) that comes from the unit and filters out any ac noise that
is on the incoming power lines.

The components and their functions in the circuitry are as follows:

Diode CR1 prevents the energy stored in capacitors C2 and C4 from
being dumped back onto the power line during a power interruption.
Power switch S1, a double--pole double throw (DPDT) switch,
disconnects power when the unit is not in use, thus increasing the mean
time between failure (MTBF).
Capacitors C1, C3, and C24 are high-voltage capacitors (1 kilovolt) that
protect the switch from arcing due to the inductive kick from inductor L1
when switch S1 disconnects power.
The inductance of L1 and L2 and the capacitance of C2 supply a cut--off
frequency of approximately 1200 Hz.
Diode CR2 supplies reverse voltage protection to electrolytic capacitors
C2 and C4 if the power inputs have been reversed.
Capacitors C7 and C8 supply high--frequency filtering from the +28 V dc
input to chassis ground.
Capacitors C5, C6, C9, and C10 supply high--frequency filtering from the
+28 V dc input to the power return.
Damping resistor R1 lowers the output impedance of L2 and protects the
performance of the DC/DC converter.
Capacitors C12, C14, C16, and C20 supply high--frequency filtering from
the power return and the chassis ground.
Capacitors C21 and C22 supply filtering from the signal to the chassis
ground.
Capacitor C4 filters the 600--mA ripple current necessary for the DC/DC
converter.

(b) DC/DC Converter

1

The DC/DC converter changes the dc input voltage (+28 volts nominal) to a
regulated +5 volt output. The integrated test (IT) includes a test of the
converter for an output voltage of 5.00 0.250 volts with an input voltage of
17 volts. The IT procedure is given in Table 1001.

COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL

DL--900 Data Loader / Part No. 7016600

The operating output specifications of the converter are:

5 V dc 3 percent
5 V dc ripple not to exceed 75 mV, peak--to--peak.

Trim resistor R4 can be added, if necessary, to adjust the output of the

DC/DC converter 10 percent from nominal. Because converters are
calibrated to 5.0 1 percent from the manufacturer, R4 is not installed on
new units. Load resistors R2 and R3 are not installed. Provisions for these
resistors are included on the printed wiring board (PWB) in case the DC/DC
converter does not regulate under low load.

The DS1 LED is lighted when power is applied to the unit. This LED, visible
only with the cover removed, provides a visual aid when testing the unit.

(c) Power Valid Monitor

1

This circuitry monitors the +5 V dc output of the DC/DC converter (see

Figure 2002, sheet 4). If the voltage is out of specification, the circuit sends
a reset signal to the processor. The hysteresis circuit in the monitor ensures
the signal remains low for a minimum of 10 milliseconds after the output
voltage returns to specification.

The monitor circuit functions as follows:

Reference diode VR1 supplies a precision 2.5 V dc reference voltage to
the window comparator at U2--4 and U2--9.
Resistor U3 biases VR1.
Capacitor C23 supplies filtering to reference diode VR1.
Resistors R5, R6, and R7 form a voltage divider as follows:
-- Resistors R5 and R6 supply a voltage to U2--8 to find the over--voltage
of the DC/DC converter output.
-- Resistors R6 and R7 supply a voltage to U2--5 to find the
under--voltage of the DC/DC converter output.
Capacitors C15 and C19 provide filtering of the voltages to U2--5 and
U2--8.
Capacitor C17 is discharged by the open collector output of microcircuit
U2 if the DC/DC converter output voltage is above or below the
comparator window.
The PWRVAL signal goes low and stays low until:
-- The converter output returns to specification.
-- Capacitor C17 is charged through resistor U3.
The PWRVAL signal returns to high when the voltage on C17 reaches
2.875 volts.

D. Processor CCA A2
(1) Processor CCA A2 (see Figure 2003) gives the following functions to the Data
Loader:
Processor control
Decoding by the PAL (programmable array logic)
Memory:
-- Ultraviolet erasable programmable read--only memory (UVEPROM)
-- Flash erasable programmable read--only memory (FEPROM) that can be
erased and programmed without being removed from the circuit
-- Static random access memory (SRAM).
Discrete inputs and outputs and selection of navigation computers
RS--422 and RS--232 interfaces
Floppy disk drive control.
(2) The address and data bus diagram is shown in Figure 4. Address lines A15 through
A8 are latched for the entire bus cycle by the processor. The lower eight address
lines are created by the following sequence:
(a) The processor drives the valid address states onto the multiplexed bus.
(b) Output signal ALE (address latch enable) goes high.
(c) Latch U16 goes transparent.
(d) Output signal ALE goes low.
(e) U16 latches the multiplexed bus state to form the lower eight address lines
during the rest of the bus cycle.
(3) Address lines A8 through A15 are pulled up through a 100k ohms resistor, U24. The
8--bit multiplexed bus is pulled up through a 100k ohms resistor, U13. These signals
must be pulled up because they are tri--stated when the processor is held at reset.
(4) The following paragraphs describe processor control, interrupts, direct memory
access (DMA) requests, and the clock.
(a) Processor Control
1

The 80C188 microprocessor, U23 (see Figure 2003, sheet 3), has a 16--bit
internal core with an 8--bit multiplexed external data bus. It runs at 6 MHz.

Inputs to the processor are:

Reset
Interrupts
DMA requests
Clock.
a

Reset
(1) This circuit resets the processor. An external test signal, TSTRES,
can be applied through the P2 test connector to make sure the
reset circuit operates correctly.
(2) The reset signal, PWRVAL, which comes from power supply CCA
A2, connects to pin 2 of the P2 test connector. This high impedance
signal is pulled up through U26, input to a Schmitt trigger--inverter
U30, and output as PVTEST. Series resistor U26 also supplies 3.3k
ohms of isolation between PVTEST and a second Schmitt
trigger--inverter. The input of the second inverter connects to the P2
test connector on pin 9, the reference signal TSTRES. The output
from the first Schmitt trigger becomes an internal discrete input
(PVTEST) to the processor, where it can be read.
(3) If the TSTRES signal from the P2 test connector is driven low, the
RESET* processor input signal remains high and the processor is
not reset.

Interrupts
(1) The internal interrupt control of the processor selects from among
the internal interrupts and the following external interrupt inputs:
FDCINTThe INT0 input to the processor is generated
when the floppy disk controller (FDC) requests a READ or a
WRITE operation from the FDC internal registers.
SIOINTThe INT1 input to the processor is generated by
the serial communications controller (SCC) (Figure 2003,
sheet 6).
EXTINTThe INT2 input is not connected in the aircraft.
SELINTThe INT3 input is generated each time the Select
switch is pushed.

DMA Requests
(1) DMA channel 0, DRQ0, is used to transfer data to or from the FDC.
(2) DMA channel 1, DRQ1, is used to transfer data to or from the SCC
channel A, the RS--422 port.

(3) Both DMA channels can be used for unsynchronized

memory--to--memory block transfers such as FLASH to
random--access memory (RAM).
d

Clock
(1) A 12--MHz clock signal (Figure 2003, sheet 7) connects to the X1
oscillator input of the processor. The signal is ac--terminated with
resistor R3 and capacitor C23. The 12--MHz input drives an internal
divide--by--two counter to generate the 6--MHz processor clock.

Outputs from the processor are:

Memory chip selects
Peripheral chip selects
Clock
Reset
ALE
Read
Write.
a

Memory Chip Selects

(1) The three types of memory chip selects are:
Lower memory chip selects (LCS) used for selecting the 32
kB of RAM. This signal, RAM*, at pin 33, selects the SRAM,
U8 (Figure 2003, sheet 4) when it is active or low. There are

Peripheral Chip Selects

(1) FDCCS*, pin 25, goes to the floppy disk controller (FDC)
(Figure 2003, sheet 7). This signal is active during any processor
READ/WRITE access to the memory range of the FDC.
(2) FDCDAK*, pin 27, goes to the FDC (Figure 2003, sheet 7) as a
DMA acknowledge and to the PAL, U32.

(3) PCS3*, pin 29, goes to U32, where it is qualified with processor
READ/WRITE outputs for accessing the discrete inputs and
outputs.
(4) SIOCS*, pin 30 (Figure 2003, sheet 6), enables the SCC, U2, and
U32 to condition signals to access U2.
c

Clock
(1) The 6--MHz clock output from the processor clocks the SCC
(Figure 2003, sheet 6).

RESET
(1) The RESET processor output signal is the inverted state of the
input signal RESET* and is synchronized to the processor clock.
This output signal supplies a reset signal to the FDC and is also an
input to the PAL, U32. The PAL uses this signal to condition the
SIOWR* and SIORD* signals, which are the write and read signals
to the SCC. When RESET is active high, both SIOWR* and SIORD*
are driven low by the PAL. This results in a hardware reset to the
SCC.

ALE
(1) ALE is the latch enable signal for the transparent latch, U16
(Figure 2003, sheet 4).

READ (RD*)
(1) RD* is an active low signal that indicates the processor is
performing a memory or input/output (I/O) READ cycle.

WRITE (WR*)
(1) WR* is an active low signal that indicates the data on the bus is to
be written into a memory or an I/O device.

(b) Decoding by the PAL

1

The PAL, U32, decodes and processes the signals that are used on
CCA A2 as follows:
LFTON, RGTON, and AUXON are decoded from the three enable
Select discrete outputs, ENBLTX, ENBLSEL2, and ENBLSEL1, that
come from the addressable latch, U25. LFTON, RGTON, and
AUXON supply gate drive signals for the MOSFET transistors Q1,
Q2, and Q3 (see Figure 2003, sheet 5).
TST422 is muxed by U22 (see Figure 2003, sheet 5) to allow the
processor to verify the state of the signal. This signal is used to
enable the RS--422 differential driver, U11 (see Figure 2003,
sheet 6).
FDCTC is the terminal count signal to the FDC (see Figure 2003,
sheet 7). This signal is conditioned by the PAL from the FDCAK*,
address A0, and WR* to command the FDC to terminate an
operation.
DISCWR* is active through the PAL during a processor WRITE cycle
to enable the addressable latch, U25 (see Figure 2003, sheet 5).
DISCRD* is active through the PAL during a processor READ cycle
to enable the addressable mux, U22 (see Figure 2003, sheet 5).
SIOWR* and SIORD* go to the SCC (see Figure 2003, sheet 6).
These signals are enabled by the PAL only when PCS4, pin 30 on
the processor, is active. SIOWR* is delayed by conditioning the
WRITE signal with the processor CLKOUT (6 MHz) to agree with
SCC timing requirements.

(c) Memory
1

Figure 2003, sheet 4 shows the transparent latch, U16, and three memory
devices.

The processor drives valid address states, A7 thru A0, onto the multiplexed
bus. When ALE is high, the latch is transparent (refer to Table 4). When ALE
is driven low, the addresses are latched.

The types of memory are described in the following paragraphs.

a

UVEPROM
(1) The nonvolatile ultraviolet erasable programmable read--only
memory (UVEPROM), U17, has 32 kB of memory. It is selected by
the processors upper memory chip select signal, BTEPROM* (see
Figure 2003, sheet 3) and enabled by a processor RD*. The
UVEPROM contains the boot software that boots the processor on
power--up and after every reset. The boot software performs a
series of tests to ensure the hardware functions correctly before
giving processor control to the application software resident in
FLASH memory.
(2) The boot software has power--up tests and all the processor-dependent tests used during an integrated test. After each reset,
the boot software does the following sequence:
Turns on the three LEDs located on the front panel
Does a series of power--up tests
Transmits a status message through the RS--232 interface
before and after each test is completed.
-- If a hardware failure is detected, failure information is
transmitted by the RS--232.
-- The three LEDs are set to the states shown in Table 5.
When the power--up tests are completed, the state of the three
discrete inputsLFTENBLD, RGTENBLD, and AUXENBLDis
read to determine whether software control should be given to
the application software residing in FLASH or the unit should be
placed in test mode.
-- If all three discretes are grounded, this condition is recognized
as a command to place the unit in test mode.
-- Test mode allows commands to be received by the boot
software to do integrated test routines.
-- If any of the discrete inputs are not grounded, processor
control is given to the application software.

FEPROM
(1) The FEPROM, U1, has 64 kB of memory. It is selected by the
processors midrange chip select signal FEPROM* and enabled by
the processor RD* or WR* signals. The U1 memory is
programmable for application software. The IT gives instructions on
how to program U1. The IT in Table 1001.

SRAM
(1) The SRAM, U8, has 32 kB of memory. It is selected by the
processors low--range chip select signal RAM*. The memory area
in U8 is intended for interrupt vectors, processor stack, disk buffers,
and other processor variables.

(d) Discrete Inputs and Outputs and Select Switch

1

Discrete Inputs
a

Processor CCA A2 has eight discrete inputs (Figure 2003, sheet 5) that
can be read by the processor from the 8--to--1 multiplexer, U22. The
multiplexer is selected by the DISCRD* signal from the PAL
(Figure 2003, sheet 3). The desired discrete is selected by generating
the proper address on A0 through A2, which is decoded by the
multiplexer. The inverted discrete input state is read because the
multiplexed bus is connected to the inverted output of the multiplexer,
U22--6.

(1) The first three discrete inputs on the multiplexer, LFTENBLD,

RGTENBLD, and AUXENBLD, are transmit enable discrete inputs
that read the state of the ground/open discrete output signals
ENBLLFT, ENBLRGT, and ENBLAUX. Signal connections on the
motherboard are:
ENBLLFT to LFTENBLD
ENBLRGT to RGTENBLD
ENBLAUX to AUXENBLD.
(a) ENBLLFT, ENBLRGT, and ENBLAUX enable a transmitter in
one of three navigation computers for the RS--422 interface.
Diodes CR1, CR2, and CR3 protect the inputs of the
multiplexer because the discretes are pulled--up to +28 V dc in
the navigation computer. Any voltage greater than +5 V dc on
one of the diodes causes it to be reverse--biased, thus
clamping the voltage on that input to a maximum of +5 V dc.
The LFTENBLD discrete input lets the processor read the
state of the discrete output, ENBLLFT, which enables the
LEFT navigation computers RS--422 transmitter.
The RGTENBLD discrete input lets the processor read the
state of the discrete output, ENBLRGT, which enables the
RIGHT navigation computers RS--422 transmitter.
The AUXENBLD discrete input lets the processor read the
state of the discrete output, ENBLAUX, which enables the
AUXILIARY navigation computers RS--422 transmitter.
(2) The TST422 discrete input is an internally generated signal used
only to do a test. The processor verifies the state of this test signal,
which enables the RS--422 differential driver, U11, for wraparound
test.
(3) The PVTEST discrete input is an internal signal used to do a test. It
does the test on the reset circuitry to the processor and on the
PWRVAL signal generated on power supply CCA A1.
(4) The TESTDIS discrete input connects to pin N on the rear
connector of the Data Loader. This signal currently has no use, but
could be used during testing to identify specific modes, etc. This
input does not have a protection diode and must always be
connected to a valid logic level output.
(5) The BAUDDISC discrete input connects to the output on pin 5 of
RS--422 receiver power, U10, shown in Figure 2003, sheet 6.

(6) The VPP discrete input is a test signal used to determine whether
external +12 V dc power is being applied to pin P on the rear
connector of the Data Loader to allow programming of the FLASH
memory device. Because the state of this input is determined by the
voltage divider created by R1 and U20, the level of the applied
voltage must be large enough to provide a valid logic level. Table 6
lists the logic states that will be read on the discrete input VPP for
various voltage levels.
(a) This discrete input can be used only to determine whether
there is an externally applied voltage, and not whether the
voltage is adequate to program the FLASH. An external digital
multimeter (DMM) should be used to verify that the voltage
agrees with the programming requirements for the FLASH.

Discrete Outputs
a

The U25 addressable latch has eight discrete outputs that can be
decoded from the data input off the multiplexed bus at U25--13.

The outputs supply three functions.

(1) Control the state of the front--panel LEDs: The three front--panel
LEDs can be individually controlled by writing to the addressable
latch. The latched output drives the base of a Darlington pair in U7,
sinking the 25 mA of current necessary to drive the LEDs. After all
resets:
The boot code software writes a 1 to each of the discretes to
turn on all LEDs to indicate the unit is operating.
If a failure occurs during the power--up tests in the boot software,
the state of the LEDs will show the cause of failure.
The application software can use the LEDs to indicate which one
of the three RS--422 transmitters has been enabled. Writing a 1
to the proper discrete turns on the selected LED.
(2) Enable navigation computers: The ENBLSEL1, ENBLSEL2, and
ENBLTX discrete outputs are decoded by the PAL to provide the
gate drive signals for the metal oxide semiconductor field--effect
transistors (MOSFET) Q1, Q2, and Q3, (Figure 2003, sheet 5).

(a) These transistors form the ground/open discrete outputs

ENBLLFT, ENBLRGT and ENBLAUX, which go to the rear
connector pins of the Data Loader. Driving the gate--to--source
voltage of one of the N--channel MOSFETs to a logic level of 1
causes the drain to appear to be grounded. This enables a
transmitter in one of up to three navigation computers for
RS--422 communication. The PAL logic allows only one
MOSFET to be driven at a time.
(b) The logic states that are written to each of the enable select
discretes to select one of the ground/open outputs are shown
in Table 7.

Internal test (TST422)

(3) Test the internal circuitry: Two discrete outputs are used to test the
internal circuitry.
(a) The SELTEST discrete output is used to test the select switch
debounce circuitry. Writing a 1 to this discrete drives the base
of the 2003 Darlington pair and discharges capacitor C35
through resistor SIP U12. As the capacitor discharges, the
output of the Schmitt--trigger inverter, U30, toggles the SELINT
signal to a logic 1, which is an interrupt input to the processor.
(b) The PVSTROBE discrete output is used to test the power
monitor circuitry located on the power supply. Writing a 1 to this
discrete drives the base of the U7 Darlington pair and
discharges the capacitor, C17, located on the output of the
power supply window comparator. A voltage of 2.5 volts on this
capacitor causes the hysteresis comparator to trip the PWRVAL
signal and generate a reset to the processor.
3

Select Switch
a

This momentary switch connects to the processor interrupt input. A

hardware debounce prevents getting multiple interrupts from a
single depression of the switch. The interrupt input is active while
the switch is depressed.

(e) RS--422 and RS--232 Interfaces

1

RS--422 Interface
a

The RS--422 interface (Figure 2003, sheet 6) can be multiplexed with up

to three navigation computers.

The following make up the RS--422 interface:

Channel A of the SCC, U2
Quad driver U11
Quad receiver U10
Resistors and capacitors.

The SCC channel A DMA request allows blocks of data to be either

received or transmitted by the SCC to or from memory without direct
processor control.
(1) The processor polls the SCC transmitter until the transmit buffer is
empty.
(2) The peripheral chip select from the processor, SIOCS*, enables the
SCC channel A.
(3) The SIOWR* or the SIORD* signal (depending on whether the SCC
is reading data from memory or writing to it) is sent by the processor
to the SCC.
(4) The TX--DATA output of the Data Loader at U2--15 connects to the
RX--DATA input of each navigation computer.
(5) The TX--DATA and CLK--OUT outputs from each navigation
computer are connected to the Data Loaders RX--DATA, U2--13,
and RX--CLK/TX--CLK, U2--12, inputs. The U32 PAL (Figure 2003,
sheet 3) functions as a 1:4 decoder, allowing only one navigation
computer to be enabled at any given time.
(6) The SCC channel A continues DMA requests until the defined
number of bytes has been transferred.
(7) The interrupt output of the 85C30, SIOINT*, is sent to the
processor.

Inputs to the quad receiver, U10, are differential pairs of signals for
receiving data and receiving clock signals, a baud select signal for the
RS--232 interface, and a differential pair of signals used for testing. The
receive--data signal and the receive--clock signal go to the SCC. The
test pair goes to the quad driver, U11.

The transmit--data signal from U2--15 and the test pair from the U10
receiver are inputs to the quad driver, U11. Signal TST422 from the PAL
U32 (Figure 2003, sheet 3) is input to U11 to enable the test outputs
from the driver.

Components C15, C16, C50, C51, U6, U14, U15 and U20 supply
transient voltage protection as well as performing wave--shaping of input
and output signals to decrease the level of EMI noise.

RS--232 Interface
a

The Data Loader has an RS--232 interface to communicate with

compatible RS--232 units. The following make up the RS--232 interface:
Channel B of the SCC, U2
Receiver/driver U21
A separate RS--232 ground to give 300 ohms of isolation to limit the
ground differential between the Data Loader and other units in the
system.

(f)

The RS--232 interface can be operated at either 4800 or 9600 baud by

programming the SCC channel B baud rate generator. The frequency of
the baud rate generator depends on the input clock signal, PCLK, and
the programmed values for the clock mode and baud--rate time
constant.

The transmit--data and receive--data signals both come through the U21
transmitter--receiver. Transmitter--receiver U21 has a voltage doubler
function that gives a +10 V dc output and a voltage inverter function that
gives a --10 V dc output.

FDC

The DL--900 Data Loader has a standard 3.5--inch floppy disk drive.
The processor controls the disk drive through U29. The processors
internal DMA controller is connected to the FDC (Figure 2003, sheet 7),
which allows either reading or writing from, or to the disk. No additional
hardware is required for the operation of the disk drive.

The FDC has a separate analog supply source for the

analog--data--separator circuitry and an analog ground, U29--37, for the
return path. Both the analog source and ground consist of extra wide
traces on the PWB, and both have a designated pin on the card
connector.

Separating the analog and digital supplies and grounds decreases noise on
the analog circuitry. Decoupling is supplied by:
Capacitors C25 and C45 between the analog source and ground
Capacitors C32 and C26 between the digital supply and ground.
a

A 24--MHz signal provided by external oscillator, U34:

Operates the FDC
Is divided by the FDC to provide a reference frequency for the PAL
and for other internal circuitry
Has the output series terminated by R7 to help reduce ringing due to
any impedance mismatching.

A hardware RESET signal supplies the systems reset to the FDC. When
this signal is active high, the FDC is placed in the idle state and all output
lines to the disk drive are disabled. After a reset, the processor keeps the
FDC from generating an interrupt until the FDC has been initialized.

Signals used to interface with the processor include the read and write (RD*
and WR*) signals and the peripheral chip select signal, FDCCS*. These
signals enable the processor to write and read the status of the FDC
registers.

The DMA resources are controlled by the FDCs DMA request signal,
FDCDRQ, which is an active high output. The processor responds to the
DMA request with an acknowledge signal, FDCDAK*, and a read or write
strobe. The purpose of the terminal count signal, FDCTC, generated by the
PAL using address A0 and FDCDAK*, is to terminate the current operation
before the last byte has been transferred.

An interrupt request active high output from the FDC, FDCINT, signals that
an operation requires the attention of the processor.

These FDC output signals interface to the disk drive:

HDSEL selects the active disk drive head.

STEP issues step pulses to the disk drive.
DIR determines the direction of the head movement.
WGATE enables the write circuitry of the disk drive.

WDATA writes precompensated serial data to be written onto the

disk (in conjunction with WGATE).
DR0 selects the disk drive.
MTR0 enables the disk drive motor.
MODESEL connects to the disk drive 1M/2M select input (pin 2).
8

Inputs from the floppy disk drive unit are as follows:

RDATA is the raw data read from the disk.
WRTPRT indicates when the disk is write--protected.
TRK0 indicates the head is at track zero of the disk drive.
INDEX signals the beginning of a track.
DSKCHG indicates a removed disk.

All of the outputs from the disk drive are pulled up through the 1k ohms
resistors SIP, U28.

10 Two PAL filters support 250 kB per second and 500 kB per second data
rates. The two filters consist of resistors R4 and R5; and capacitors C42,
C43, and C44. Resistor R6 is the current limiting resistor for the charge
pump that charges and discharges the filter. The filter enabled by the FDC
through the filter ground switches FGND250, U29--40, and FGND500,
U29--39, depends on the value loaded in the data rate register.

E.

Disk Drive
(1) The disk drive is a standard 1M/2M half--height 3.5--inch floppy disk drive. When
formatted, the disks store 720 kB and 1.44 MB of information, respectively. The disk
drive attaches to the motherboard with a ribbon cable. A lead set from the
motherboard supplies power and ground.
(2) The drive can detect a high density identification (ID) hole on a high--density disk and
automatically set the recording mode.

F.

Motherboard CCA A3
(1) The motherboard (see Figure 2004) provides all of the interconnections between the
power supply card, the processor card, the disk drive interface cables, and the rear
connector. Capacitors C1, C2, C3, and C4, and a ferrite bead, Z1, make up the
power return filter. The capacitors are connected across the return signal, +28VRTN,
and chassis ground, CGND. The filter reduces high--frequency EMI noise on the
return ground.
(2) Resistor R1 connects the signal ground to the filtered return, FILRTN. Resistor R2,
not presently installed on the Data Loader, would connect the signal ground to the
power return, +28VRTN.
(3) Resistor R3 ensures the voltage differences between the signal grounds in the Data
Loader and other line replaceable units (LRU) allow operation of the RS--232
interface.

Integrated Test Procedure (cont)

GENERAL INFORMATION
This DL--900 Integrated Test Specification is required to test and program the DL--900 Data
Loader Computer. It consists of automated tests which are executed on the STZ--100
Automatic Test System using the DL--900 Integrated Test Cable. The test program is released
on a floppy diskette which is compatible with the STZ--100.

3.1

Test Program Description

The DL--900 Integrated Test is a menu driven program used to troubleshoot, test and program
the DL--900 data loader. It is written in the MATEL programming language and resides on one
5.25 floppy disk. The test programs on the disk are structured so that each file corresponds to
a subassembly, reference section 8.1 for filenames and description. Each file is further divided
into groups, where each group corresponds to a specific circuit located on the subassembly. A
68000 assembly language module which is used as the RS--232 driver routine to send/receive
parameters to/from the unit also resides on the disk. This module is loaded and invoked using
the MATEL commands LASM and XASM, respectively.
The code resident in the DL--900s boot EPROM, located on the digital CCA, contains all the test
routines which are executable by the processor. To access the test routines the processor must
first be placed in test mode. This is accomplished by initiating a reset to the processor while
grounding all three transmitter discrete outputs. This special condition causes the UUT to enter
test mode where the processor will wait for a valid command to be received across the RS--232
interface. When a command is received, the requested test is executed and the results are
returned by RS--232. The results are stored in STZ--100 RAM locations by the 68000 assembly
module. When all results have been received, control is returned to the MATEL software which
then verifies the test results using the VERIFY command. Each VERIFY statement is identified
with a test number. Not all tests require the RS--232 interface. Some tests can be
accomplished using only the STZ--100 hardware resources, e.g., voltage measurements using
the DMM.
The MATEL files on the floppy disk are in a condensed format which has all comments and
spaces removed along with all the STZ--100 Interpreter commands abbreviated. The
condensed files provide faster execution of tests and less time to read in files from the disk.

execution will begin automatically.

5.3

DL--900 Integrated Test Cable Setup

The DL--900 Integrated Test cable provides all necessary resources and interface between the
STZ--100 and the UUT; no test adapter is required. The DL--900 Integrated Test cable consists
of seven connectors: four ZIF connectors which attach directly to the STZ--100, one DB--25
connector which provides the RS--232 interface, one connector to mate to the rear connector of
the UUT, and one test connector which can only be installed when the UUTs cover is removed.
Each connector is marked with a connector identifier. Reference figure 1 for cable connections
to UUT.
The program prompts the operator to make the cable connections. Once all cable connections
have been completed, the program displays a Menu listing the options which can be selected.

Integrated Test Procedure (cont)

DL--900 INTEGRATED TEST OPTIONS

There are several options listed in the Main Menu of the Integrated Test. These options allow
the operator to choose Final Test, Pre--test or CCA level testing.

6.1

DL--900 Final Test

The DL--900 Final test option can only be selected after a Pre--test with no failures has been
completed, reference section 6.2 for a description of the Pre--test. This option verifies the
hardware is functioning correctly and the FLASH memory has been programmed with the
correct version of application software. Prior to selecting a Final test, the unit must be
inspected, and the cover and inspection seals must be installed. When the unit has completed a
Final test and no failures have occurred, the unit has fulfilled the requirements of this
specification.

6.2

DL--900 Pre--test
The DL--900 Pre--test option requires the cover to be removed to allow access to the P2
connector located on the Digital CCA. The J2 mating connector which is an integral part of the
DL--900 Test cable must be installed in this connector during the Pre--test. The program will
check to verify the connector has been installed correctly. The Pre--test option is unique in that
it is the only option which tests the FLASH memory located on the Digital card. At the end of the
Pre--test, with no failures occurring, the program will prompt the operator to install the
Application software disk, part number PS7016588--003, into the DL--900 disk drive. This disk
contains the Application file which is used to program the FLASH memory. If the programming
is successful, a Pre--test valid flag is also programmed into the FLASH. This flag is checked
when the Final Test option is selected, therefore, a Pre--test must always be completed prior to
performing a Final test. In the event a failure occurs during the Pre--test, the FLASH memory
will not be programmed.

6.3

DL--900 Quick Pre--test

The DL--900 Quick Pre--test option performs a test similar to the Pre--test option but does not
require any operator interaction during test. At the beginning of the test, the operator is required
to install a 2 Meg disk into the disk drive of the UUT. Note, this option does not test or program
FLASH, hence FLASH memory is unaltered. Thus, this option can not be used in place of the
Pre--test option.

Other DL--900 Test Options

There are several other options listed in the Main Menu which range from cycling UUT power to
performing CCA level tests. The CCA level tests include the Power Supply CCA, Digital CCA,
and the Floppy Disk Controller (FDC)/Disk drive. Selecting one of these options will display a
CCA level Menu listing options to test specific circuits. This gives the operator greater flexibility
for testing in the event trouble--shooting a failures is required.

DL--900 FINAL TEST REQUIREMENTS

This section specifies the tests that a DL--900 Data Loader must complete and pass to have met
the requirements of this specification.

7.1

Test Environment
All tests shall be performed at normal room temperature (between 15 and 35 Centigrade) and
normal ambient pressure (between 22 and 32 inches of Hg) with less than 90 percent relative
humidity.

7.2

Power, Signal, and Sensor Requirements

All power requirements for the DL--900 Data Loader are provided by the STZ--100.

7.3

Initial Test Conditions

Prior to performing a Final Test, the DL--900 must be completely assembled, completed a
Pre--test with no failures, and be inspected and sealed. The Final Test option can be selected
from the Main Menu of the test program.

7.4

Final Test
A Final Test must be performed on every DL--900 Data Loader after the unit has passed a
Pre--test, been inspected and sealed. This option can be selected from the Main Menu of the
test program. It automatically executes a set of tests that verify the unit is functioning correctly
and verifies FLASH memory has been programmed with the correct version of Application code.
A printed test report is also automatically generated. A DL--900 shall have passed the Final Test
when the following message is displayed at the end of the Final test report:

CHECK
1. Overview
A. General
(1) Use these procedures to find damaged or worn parts and parts that show signs of
near failure. Do these checks during testing and fault isolation, disassembly, and
assembly.
(2) Replace all damaged or worn parts. This prevents future failures of the equipment.
B. Equipment and Materials
(1) No equipment is necessary.
(2) No materials are necessary.

2. Procedure
A. Precautions
CAUTION: THE DATA LOADER CONTAINS ESDS ITEMS. USE PROTECTIVE
PROCEDURES.
CAUTION: DO NOT TOUCH THE CONNECTOR OR COMPONENT PINS UNLESS
PROPERLY GROUNDED. THE ESDS COMPONENT COULD BE DAMAGED
OR ESTABLISHED PERFORMANCE LEVELS COULD BE DEGRADED.
B. Visual Checks
(1) Examine all surfaces (covers included) for twisted, bent, or dented areas. The pieces
must fit together correctly. Installation of the cover must not compress the wires or
cause a blockage in the movement of a part.
(2) Examine the exterior and interior of the Data Loader. The Data Loader must be clean
and have no dirt, loose particles, solder splashes, and other unwanted materials.
Painted surfaces should not look worn or have bad scratches.
(3) Examine the solder connections. Make sure the solder is applied correctly and that
the connections are correctly attached. Make sure solder joints are tight and free of
scratches, roughness, sharp edges, dullness, bridging, or blistering. Solder joints
must show signs of wetting (molten solder adhering and flowing on a metallic surface
to a smooth, even coating) and bonding where the solder blends to the soldered
surface to form a small contact angle.
(4) Examine electrical components. Items that have cracks, have changed in color, and
show signs they became too hot can be defective. Replace them or do electrical
checks to make sure of their condition.

COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL

DL--900 Data Loader / Part No. 7016600

(5) Examine electrical insulation. The insulation must be flexible, not rigid or broken, and
have no surfaces that are burned. Make sure the wires do not touch sharp edges and
surfaces that could cause damage to the insulation.
(6) Examine connector pins. The pins must not be bent or damaged. Make sure the
connectors are tightly engaged.
(7) Examine installed parts. Make sure that all parts are installed correctly and the
attaching hardware is in position and is tight. Make sure the orientation and polarity is
correct.
(8) Examine metal parts. Make sure there is no corrosion, rust, or other structural
damage.
(9) Examine the threaded parts. There must be no cross--threads and burrs.
(10) Examine the identification plate. Make sure the identification plate is tightly attached
and you can read it.
C. CCA Checks
(1) Examine each CCA for:
A cracked or broken printed wiring board (PWB)
Obvious openings in the printed circuit tracks
Loose terminals
Damaged solder connections.
D. PWB Checks
(1) Check the PWB for general damage (solder balls, damaged pads, open or broken
runs, loose terminals, or shorted component leads).
(2) Check the PWB for any signs of delamination.
(3) Check the PWB for any signs of haloing. Haloing shows in the base laminate in the
form of a light area around holes or other machined areas on or below the surface of
the base laminate.
(4) Check the PWB for crazing. Crazing causes white spots or crosses to form on or
below the surface of the base laminate, reflecting the separation of fibers in the glass
cloth and connecting weave intersections.
(5) Check the PWB for blistering. Blistering is observed as a localized swelling and
separation between any layers of the base laminate. Blistering can also occur
between the laminate and the metal cladding.
(6) Check the PWB for any lifted lands. This condition is identified by a surface layer
conductor that has become detached from the base laminate material. Lifted lands
must be replaced.

ILLUSTRATED PARTS LIST

IPL Figure 1IPL Figure 2 IPL Table 1IPL Table 2

1. Overview
A. Introduction
(1) The Illustrated Parts List (IPL) gives the parts that are used to make the Data Loader.
It also supplies the necessary data to get replacement parts for repair and fault
isolation.
(2) The list of parts is given in general disassembly sequence. The illustrations show
where you can find each part and are an important aid in disassembly and assembly
procedures.
B. How to Find a Part
(1) If the Part Number is known, refer to the Numerical Index to find the figure and item
numbers in the Parts List.
(2) If the equipment designator is known, refer to the Equipment Designator Index to find
the figure and item numbers in the Parts List.
(3) After you get the figure and item number, refer to the Parts List for more identification
data.

2. Contents of the IPL

A. List of Suppliers
(1) The names and addresses of companies that supply the items included in the Parts
List are shown in the List of Suppliers. Refer to List of Suppliers, paragraph 3.
(2) The supplier CAGE code is given in the Nomenclature column of the Parts List to
identify the supplier.
B. Equipment Designator Index
(1) The Equipment Designator Index is an alphanumeric list of the equipment
designators given to the subassemblies and electrical/electronic parts. The
designators are an aid to identify parts on the schematics and wiring diagrams. Refer
to Equipment Designator Index, paragraph 4.
(2) Each entry in the Equipment Designator Index identifies the figure and item numbers
where the part is found in the Parts List. The Equipment Designator Index may also
identify a geographical location of the equipment designator found on the graphic
illustration. A hyphen between two designators shows a continuous sequence of
designators (example: A1A5 is the same as A1 thru A5).

C. Numerical Index
(1) The Numerical Index is an alphanumeric list of all the Part Numbers shown in the
Part Number column of the Parts List. Refer to Numerical Index, paragraph 5.
(2) Also included in the index are the Honeywell Part Numbers that are equivalent to the
manufacturer Part Number. Optional manufacturer Part Numbers are not included in
the index.
(3) The Fig. Item column gives all of the locations of a part. If a Part Number is in more
than one Fig. Item location, the Part Number is shown only one time in the Part
Number column.
(4) The Total Req column shows the total number of parts that are used at each Fig.
Item location.
(5) The Airline Stock No. column has space for customers to use.
D. Parts List
(1) An item number is given to each part in the Parts List and on the related figure. The
item numbers show the general disassembly sequence. Refer to Parts List,
paragraph 6.
(2) Some of the parts are not shown on a figure, such as a fully assembled item, an
unprogrammed microcircuit, and a selection of resistors. Items that are not illustrated
have a dash before the item number in the Parts List.
(3) An item number with a letter suffix (A thru Z except I and O) shows any one of these
conditions has occurred:
A modification (by a service bulletin)
A change in configuration from the initial item
A change to a better part (no service bulletin)
Accommodation was made for a disassembly sequence.
(4) The Part Number column shows the Part Number given by the primary source of the
part, either Honeywell or a commercial supplier, or the Part Number of a U.S.
standard part. When this column shows the Part Number of a commercial supplier or
a U.S. standard part, the Nomenclature column may show the Honeywell Part
Number. When this column shows the Honeywell Part Number for ordinary
commercial hardware, the Nomenclature column gives a description of the part.
