Revision F

The most important thing we build is trust

Introduction
This accredited solution describes the Gilat SkyEdge II modem and how to configure it together with a SAILOR
VSAT system. The setup, configuration and tests were done using airtime from a European VSAT service
provider.

SkyEdge II configuration
Connection of PC
Connect a PC with an Ethernet cable to LAN port 1 of the modem.
Set the PC to static IP address: 192.168.1.2
Start an Internet browser (e.g. Internet Explorer) and go to URL://192.168.1.1 in order to get access to the
webserver of the modem.
Login with:
Username: inst
Password: $Sat2598$

RF Downlink frequency
In the section General the RF Downlink frequency is shown. Write it down as it is going to be used for the
selection of LNB LO. (RF Downlink frequency = 12705300 KHz in above example in figure 1)
Go further down on the page to find the BUC and LNB LO frequencies. See figure 2:

Figure 2: BUC and LNB LOs

LNB LO
Depending on the RF Downlink frequency select an appropriate LNB LO of 9.75, 10.25, 10.75 or 11.25 GHz
which will result in an L-band frequency between 950 and 1650 MHz which is the operating frequency band of the
SkyEdge II modem.
In the above example in figure 2: LNB Custom L.O = 11250000, because 12705300 11250000 = 1455.300
MHz.
This is within the operating frequency band of the SkyEdge II modem.

BUC LO
Select the BUC to be 12.8 GHz as this is the BUC LO of the SAILOR VSAT. Remember to inform this to the hub
operator when doing line-up and commissioning. If the service provider already uses extended frequency the
BUC is probably already configured to 12.8 GHz at the hub.

BUC 10 MHz Reference Signal

The BUC 10MHz Reference Signal must be configured to ON, otherwise the SAILOR VSAT will not allow TX.

GPS
Go further down on the page to find the Location Coordinates and enable GPS. See figure 3:

Figure 3: Location Coordinates

This will enable the serial protocol of the modem so it can communicate with the ACU.
Go to the top of the page and press the Submit button and OK to save the new settings.
The modem is now configured to be used with the SAILOR VSAT.

SAILOR VSAT configuration

Introduction
In this section we will connect a PC to the ACU and configure the modem and satellite profile to be used with the
SkyEdge II modem.

Connection of PC
Connect the PC to the service port of the ACU (LAN 3).
Set the PC to static IP address: 192.168.0.2
Start an Internet browser (e.g. Internet Explorer) and go to URL://192.168.0.1 in order to get access to the
webserver of SAILOR VSAT.

Modem profile
Go to <SETTINGS>, <Satellite profiles>, <VSAT modem profiles>, add a new entry and enter the information
shown on figure 4:

Figure 4: Gilat SkyEdge II Modem Profile

Satellite profile
Go to <SETTINGS>, <Satellite profiles>, add a new entry and select the modem profile made in the previous
section. Enter the satellite settings received from your service provider. E.g.

Satellite position
Polarization skew (normally 0)
Maximum inclination (default 0, but some older satellites are in inclined orbit and has wider search area)
Rx Polarisation
Tx Polarisation
LNB LO frequency (9.75, 10.25, 10.75 or 11.25 GHz)
Select Tracking type: Narrow band
Select Tracking RX frequency: VSAT modem

See example of a satellite profile using the SkyEdge II modem profile in figure 5:

Cable connections
Introduction
This section shows how to connect the modem to the ACU.

Modem communication cable

Connect the modem SERIAL port to the RS-232 port of the ACU. This interface is used to read the rx frequency
from the modem and to update the GPS position in the modem. See figure 6.

Rx signal
Connect the modem RF IN to the Rx Out of the ACU using a F-F 75 Ohm cable. See figure 6.

Tx signal
Connect the modem RF OUT to the Tx In of the ACU using a F-F 75 Ohm cable. See figure 6.

Connect to the satellite

Introduction
This section describes how to activate the satellite profile and to see the modem received signal strength.

Activate satellite profile

Enter the webserver of the ACU and go to <SETTINGS>, <Satellite profiles> and activate the Gilat VSAT
Service satellite profile. The ACU will now setup all the satellite parameters, read the rx frequency from the
modem and update the modem with GPS information.

Modem RSSI
Wait until the modem get RX lock and check the signal level on the DASHBOARD of the SAILOR VSAT
webserver. See VSAT Modem signal level in figure 7.

Figure 7: SAILOR VSAT DASHBOARD

The system is now ready for line-up and commissioning.
