Trump Presidency
Vol 11; No. 20

everal members of the African

American communities are
expressing mixed reactions and
surprise to the elections of controversial New York-based
businessman Donald J Trump
as the 45th president of the
United States.

Trump defeated Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton by securing 270 Electoral College votes and
currently leads Clinton 290-228 during the
Tuesday (Nov 8) national elections.
Entering Tuesday elections with most
polls showing Clinton with marginal but
steady leads, Trump's chances of victory
were seen as remote.
The Electoral College map was
considered favorable to Clinton, who
was said to have several paths to the
winning threshold of 270 electoral
votes.
However, Trump obliterated Clinton's firewall, picking off unexpected wins
in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, as well as
sweeping swing states like North Carolina,
Florida and Ohio.

With some 70% of the African American

registered as Democrat there were expression of disappointment including strong
emotional expression that Clinton was
defeated by Trump.
Democrat Mayor of Mount Vernon
Richard Thomas says, President-elect
Donald Trump has promised to make
American great again. It is my sincere
hope that he remains true to that promise
for all of America, particularly for communities of color that have experienced
significant challenges gaining equal access to the American Dream.
Empowerment coach Carol Cameron
says Trump may not be her first choice but
it may be Gods plan and we hope he will
deliver on his promises by making America
great again. I expect him to do his job in the
interest of the people of America.
Real estate broker Henry Lindo says its a
shocker, but it is also send a message to his naysayers
and his political opponents not to be complacent.
However, I expect him to success and overall
the countrys infrastructures.
We want Mr. Trump to do good, but he
should focus on building a sustainable economy, much better than how he operates his
own business, Master stylist Pauline Fairclough explains.

We should support president-elect Trump

A
mericans are known to be
a major advocate of
democracy, freedom of expression and tolerance. However,
the ongoing protest against
duly elected president Donald
J. Trump is a contradiction of
our values and political liberty.
Trump scored an astonishing upset presidential victory
by securing 290 of the Electoral College votes, while
Hillary Clinton receive a narrow lead in the popular vote.
This is one of the weaknesses
of American voting system that
has been dogging us for years.
Readers may recall that
prior to Al Gore's defeat to
George W. Bush in 2000, three
other candidates -- Andrew
Jackson, Samuel Tilden and
Grover Cleveland, all in the
19th century -- had won the

popular vote and lost the election. Trump also four years ago
tweeted, "The electoral college
is a disaster for a democracy,"
following Mitt Romney's loss
in 2012.
Nevertheless, the Electoral
College will be with us for a
long-time
and
therefore
demonstrators against Trump
should respect the election results, as the system was not
created by the president-elect.
However, we understand
Trump is perhaps one of the
most misunderstood and controversial candidates to seek
the post of president of the
most powerful and influential
country on the planet.
His comments upset people as he came across sometimes as unsophisticated,
disrespectful and insensitive.

patrick@streethype.net

During the elections campaign,

he trashed his opponents with
outrageous comments. It
would appear that people are
just afraid of Trump as he is
very unpredictable.

Nonetheless, as noted in
his victory speech, Trump said
he will be fixing inner cities
and rebuild our highways,
bridges, tunnels, airports,
schools and hospitals.
Trump also promised to
enforce the immigration laws
of the United States and restore
the Constitutional rule of law
upon which Americas prosperity and security depend.
He also promised to reduce taxes across-the-board,
especially for working and
middle-income
Americans
who will receive a massive tax
reduction.
However,
president
Obama said Trump will be the
president and should be giving
support for him to be successful.

Battle for Diversity at the Workplace

People Are Talking...!

rganizations day in day out

are faced with both internal and external pressure to embrace diversity.
The bottom-line of an organization hugely depends on
how diverse its workforce is. To
compete in this global world,
diversity and inclusion is not an
option.
With that being said, many
organizations far and wide
spend huge amounts of money
for diversity training but this
still has not shown too much
growth and it is frustrating to
spend huge amounts of money
but still don't get positive returns.

Dr Neva
Alexander

For example there is still a

low representation of women
and minorities in leadership po-

sitions. There is still a big problem in workforce equity.

Some organizations have
taken an initiative in changing
how they hire new employees.
They have done this by editing
the hiring database to remove
gender identifying requirements. This is more like blind
hiring which assists organizations to hire solely based on
qualifications. This process,
though better than the traditional way of hiring has its challenges and it has proved not to
be quite efficient.
There are still some gender
factors that shows an applicant
is male or female which still
leads to unequal employment.

This has been controlled by putting measures or rather creating

rules that a percentage of
women should be hired or not
more than a certain number of
men should be hired.
My opinion is that there are
deep routed cultures in all aspects in the world that makes
people inclined to subconsciously make such biased decisions. A system needs to be
put in place on how to tackle
this issues because, it is the society that gets hurt in the long
run.

It is Not Sexism Why Americans Rejected Hillary

hile many people of the

world are in uproar and are
bewildered how Donald Trump
defeated some formidable,
shrewd, and devious candidates
to become the President-Elect of
the United States, some of my articles in your papers will explain
how he did it.
Donald Trump not only vanquished the opponents, he made
the major press corps look like
fools, and he dumfounded world
scholars and polling organizations. He also made with some
talking heads (reporters) cry on
TV, while some were fired for
fraudulent conduct, and others
mouths quivered as they tried to

find words and could not. In addition, he made President
Obama, governors, mayors, a
Supreme Court Justice, along
with major artists appear as fools.
All Trump did was tapped the
pulse of various angry groups of
Americans.

Why Americans
Rejected Hillary?

NEWS

Continued from page 1

To some Americans, they placed
Obama in power to make a difference and
they got a law that made the US a homosexual nation. Additionally, he angered other
groups by trying to get schools and other
public institutions to have bathrooms that a
person could enter depending on the gender
he chosen at a given time. Thus, your
daughter could be in the girls bathroom and
a pervert decided he is a woman and go molest her.

Some states stood up against Obama

and a federal judge supported them. People
of the offended religious groups remained
silent as he lit up the White House in queer
colors. However, they vented their anger at
the poll and voted for Trump. The pollsters
and the press were dumbfounded because
no one would come out and state those reasons they voted for Trump.
Some groups vented because they saw
the illegal immigrants crossing the border
with impunity to deal drugs. Other groups
saw their towns become ghost towns because of trade deals and the exporting of
jobs to other nations. Trump spoke directly
to those concerns.
Hillary, like Trump, was a horrible candidate. However, Americans had a severe
distrust for her and had twice rejected her.
The Benghazi and the email scandals intensified the Americans distrust. Additionally,
the leaked emails revealed her pay for play
use of the State Department, and the devious and underhanded slash and burn political tactics she used to defeat Bernie Sanders
and discourage Elizabeth Warren, and other
better candidates.
Perhaps out of fear, the Democrats
made her the standard bearer, despite knowing she had major negative ratings. The
mere fact Americans choose Trump, with
his idiotic and seemingly racist and sexist
behavior, over her and her 30 years of experience speaks volume. Her experience
was another factor Trump harped upon to
win. He revealed her 30 year of experience
was that of a Washington insider.
Finally, her callous behavior in sending
her advisor to send home the hundreds who
were gathered to celebrate her victory
speaks to her character. But more telling
was her earlier tweet with a little girl when
she sensed she was losing. That tweet and
her subsequent concession speech tried to
lay a guilt trip upon the American people
that sexism was the cause of her defeat.
Clearly, there are more women than
men in America, and if women all voted for
her she would have won. The fact is,
women also rejected her. Indeed, it was
time for a women president but Hilary was
not the woman. Perhaps now she can devote
her time to getting Haitians the money that
nations of the world gave her foundation to
help the Haitians.

Mayor de Blasio signs Executive Order to protect workers:

In a major effort to ensure fair employment practices and close the pay gap for women and people of color, Mayor Bill de Blasio today signed
Executive Order 21 prohibiting City agencies from inquiring about the salary history of job applicants. Executive Order 21 is the most recent
effort by the de Blasio Administration to ensure the families of NYCs diverse workforce are supported and enabled to thrive. The Mayor
also announced his intent to support Intro. 1253, sponsored by Public Advocate Letitia James, which seeks to prevent both public and private
employers from inquiring about potential employees salary histories. The Mayor and First Lady were joined by senior Administration officials, elected officials, City employees and advocates.

Murder charges against Richard Rosario dismissed

BRONX:
urder charges against Richard Rosario
have been dismissed and will not retry
in the 1996 fatal shooting for which he served
20 years in prison.
The investigation into the killing of Jorge
L. Collazo II will continue, according to
Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark.
District Attorney Clark said, We moved
to vacate Mr. Rosarios conviction on March
23, 2016freeing him from prisonand our
Conviction Integrity Unit reviewed his case
and we have determined that, in the interest
of justice, the charges should be dismissed.
We have concluded that since we would be
unable to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable
doubt, the case should not be retried.
The CIU has reviewed thousands of
documents and interviewed Rosarios alibi
witnesses, eyewitnesses who testified at the
trial, and numerous other people who were
part of the narrative of the case. Investigators
pursued new avenues of inquiry.
The family of Jorge L. Collazo II, who
was 17 years old when he was shot and killed,
deserves certainty and justice, and we will
keep investigating. His murder remains an
open case.

Assemblywoman arrested
on child abuse charges

BROOKLYN:
state assemblywoman from Brooklyn
was arrested and charged with assault
Saturday after her 12-year-old son walked
into an NYPD station house with an injured
arm and accused her of hitting him with a
broomstick, police sources said.
Diana Richardson, 33, was arrested at
her Crown Heights home at about 1 a.m.
after her son walked into the 71st Precinct
late Friday night and showed cops a contusion on his left arm, the sources said.
The distraught boy told police at about
11:20 p.m. that he had gotten into an argument with his mother about his report card.
Richardson who on social media
calls her son her greatest accomplishment
was taken to the station house the next
day and admitted to beating the boy because
he had pushed her during the argument, the
sources said.
She admitted that they had fought after
he refused to complete an essay on how to

improve his grades, the sources said.

The boy grew enraged and pushed her,
she reportedly claimed. The boy, whose
name is being withheld was treated at Kings
County Hospital.
Richarson faces charges of assault, endangering the welfare of a child, criminal
possession of a weapon and menacing. Shes

Richardson in a Facebook post had previously admitted to her son being difficult.
He is a pain in my side but I love him anyway! she wrote in January 2015.
Richardson is finishing up her first term
as an assemblywoman in Brooklyns 43rd
District which includes Crown Heights,
Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, Wingate and East
Flatbush.
Shes running unopposed for a second

Owes $20M in Payroll Taxes

By Michael Woyton (Patch Staff):

NEW ROCHELLE:
reliminary inquiries into the financial stability of the College of New Rochelle
found that about $20 million in payroll taxes
were not paid for eight quarters, beginning in
2014.
A report posted on the colleges website
said that information resulted in an immediate investigation by a Special Committee of
Trustees.
Not only was a chief restructuring officer engaged to manage the colleges finances,
but a forensic accounting firm was hired to
review the schools financial records and
practices.

The board of trustees said the review is

still in progress, but preliminary findings indicate that there is a path forward for the college to remain a stand-alone institution. It
will require significant cost-cutting and a a
significant amount of outside funding; however, it is the primary goal of the board.
President Judith Huntington stepped
down in October when the financial crisis
was discovered.
Provost and Senior Vice President for
Academic Affairs Dorothy Escribano was
named interim president.
Kevin Cavanagh, the colleges vice president of enrollment management, was appointed to serve as executive vice president
of strategy and planning.

KINGSTON, Jamaica -rofessor Sir Hilary Beckles, vice-chancellor of The University of the West Indies
(UWI) has called on US President Barack
Obama to grant a posthumous pardon to Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jr., for his 1923 mail
fraud conviction in the United States.
Beckles call comes in the wake of Jamaicas National Heroes Week, the annual
celebration of the countrys heroes and martyrs. It also comes at a time when countries
and communities in the Caribbean and across
the world are observing the United Nations
declared Decade for People of African Descent.
Marcus Garvey was the victim of
trumped up charges orchestrated by the late J.
Edgar Hoover, the famously anti-black director of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, Beckles said. We are today calling on
President Obama, himself the victim of racist
campaigns to de-legitimize his presidency, to
exonerate Garvey before he leaves office. It
is the right and proper thing to do.
A global petition campaign demanding
that Garveys federal record be expunged has
generated tens of thousands of signatures. The
campaign is supported by the Jamaican government, the Caribbean Reparations Commission, the Institute of the Black World 21st
Century and members of the Congressional
Black Caucus in the US House of Representatives.
Garveys call for the upliftment of all
Caribbean citizens through education and po-

litical engagement constitutes a critical part

of the ideological and philosophical currents
that gave birth to The University of the West
Indies almost 70 years ago, Beckles said.
The UWIs mission and mandate is a manifestation of Garveys struggles for quality education for the masses of Caribbean peoples,
for self-respect, self-determination and cultural awareness in our region.
Born on August 17, 1887, in St Anns
Bay, Jamaica, Garvey was a civil and human
rights activist, organizer and eloquent orator
who led the largest mass movement of black
people in the 20th century.
The founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), Garvey was
a strong proponent of black nationalism, panAfricanism and self-reliance. He is Jamaicas

The late Dr Martin Luther King Jr., in
paying tribute to Garvey in the 1960s, said he
was the first man on a mass scale and level
to give millions of Negroes a sense of dignity
and destiny.
Answering questions on April 9, 2015,
following a speech at The University of the
West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, President
Obama said: I think that all people want
basic dignity and want basic freedom, and
want to be able to worship as they please
without being discriminated against, or they
should be able to speak their mind about an
important issue pertaining to their community
without being arrested.
Thats true today, but it was also true of
Marcus Garvey in 1923, Beckles said. The
principles of reparatory justice on which the
Caribbean Reparations Commission are
founded, are the same principles that should
be applied to repair and restore Garveys good
name in the annals of US and world history.
The philosophy and teachings of Marcus
Mosiah Garvey have long been internationally recognized for its strong and enduring influence on the independence movements in
the Caribbean and Africa, on Rastafarianism
and on the black liberation and Black Lives

IMF approves
US$1.64 billion
stand-by arrangement for Jamaica

WASHINGTON:
he executive board of the International
Monetary Fund (IMF) on Friday approved a three-year stand-by arrangement
(SBA) for Jamaica to support the authorities continued economic reform agenda.
Access under the SBA arrangement amounts
to about US$1.64 billion (SDR 1,195.3 million), the equivalent of 312 percent of Jamaicas quota in the IMF.
The Jamaican authorities have indicated that they will treat the arrangement as
precautionary, and do not intend to draw on
the new SBA unless exogenous shocks generate an actual balance of payments need.
The executive board approval will make
about US$411.9 million (SDR 300.1 million) available, and the remainder in six
tranches upon completion of semi-annual
program reviews.
Following the executive board discussion on Jamaica, Tao Zhang, deputy managing director and acting chair, said: Jamaica
has established a commendable track record
of program ownership and implementation
under the extended fund facility (EFF).
Macroeconomic stability has been entrenched, evidenced by low inflation, the
build-up of foreign currency reserves, and a
decline in the current account deficit. Fiscal
discipline and proactive debt management
have helped place public debt on a downward trajectory. Still, growth is low, poverty
and unemployment are high, and crime and
security challenges impose a serious drag on
growth.

on their return to Haiti, confirmed the resumption of such flights. The first flight arrived last Thursday in Port-au-Prince with
30 Haitians on board and another flight arrived on Tuesday of this week with 40 other
deportees.
Desrosiers said the Haitians were subject to removal proceedings after illegally
entering the US and subsequently jailed,
HaitiLibre reported.
Pierre Esprance, the executive director
of the National Network for the Defence of
Human Rights (RNDDH), noted, "These are
not deported criminals, but people who went
to Brazil and crossed from Mexico to San
Diego, California."
Describing the resumption of these deportations as unacceptable, he added, "the
US Government did not show solidarity

Scholarship for Students Aging Out of Foster Care

Albany, NY:
The New York Bar Foundation is pleased to
announce the establishment of the 2017
Honorable Judith S. Kaye and Children and
the Law Committee Scholarship, which has
been created through a special project of the
Committee on Children and the Law of the
New York State Bar Association.
The scholarship partnership aligns the
missions of The Foundation, the Children
and the Law Committee, and the passion of
Judge Kaye.
The scholarship, valued up to $2,500,
will be awarded to three students enrolled
on a full-time or part-time basis during the
2016-2017 academic year in an accredited
undergraduate or post high school certificate program. The scholarship is open to
students who will age out or have aged out
of foster care in New York state with a permanency goal of Another Planned Permanent Living Arrangement and are enrolled
in an accredited undergraduate or post high
school certificate program during the 20162017 academic year.
Students must be under the age of 26
years. The application deadline is December 5, 2016. Students must demonstrate a
school-related financial need beyond tuition
that is not being met by other sources.
The Judith S. Kaye Scholarship originally was established by the New York
State Permanent Judicial Commission on
Justice for Children at the request of the
Kaye family to honor her commitment to
improving the lives and life chances of the
children who come before the New York
courts. Judge Kaye chaired the commission
for more 25 years, first while she served as
an associate judge and later as chief judge

of the state Court of Appeals and continuing

while of counsel at Skadden, Arps, Slate,
Meagher & Flom.
The reality today is that far too many
young people leave foster care without the
permanency and support of a stable family
or the benefit of an education, Judge Kaye
wrote in a Newsday op-ed (How New
York can help its foster children succeed,
February 4, 2015). A quarter experience
homelessness within the first few years of
leaving foster care, half are unemployed at
the age of 24, and one in four will be caught
up in the criminal justice system within two
years.
The scholarship puts Judge Kayes
words into action. Every child in our country is entitled to an education sufficient to
permit her to lead our great nation through
this new century, she said. We must continue to strive to provide better supports for
our children to allow them to succeed to
nurture and help them achieve their dreams
and aspirations. Only then will we have met
our responsibility of not only keeping our
children safe but also encouraging them to
thrive and be successful.
In January 2014, Research Highlights
on Education and Foster Care reported that
When supported by strong practices and
policies, positive school experiences can
counteract the negative effects of abuse,
neglect, separation, and lack of permanency
experienced by the nearly 400,000 U.S.
children and youth in foster care. Education
not only supports economic success in adult
life, it also provides opportunities for improved well-being in physical, intellectual,
and social domains during critical developmental periods.

The National Working Group further

reported that while the majority of youth in
foster care want to go to college (84%), a
small percentage of foster youth who graduate from high school attend college (20%)
and very few attain a bachelors degree (2
to 9%).

Mo Farah won
the 5,000m and
10,000m titles
at the past two
Olympic Games

Farah, Bolt and Semenya up

for athlete of the year awards

reat Britain's Mo Farah has been nominated for the IAAF's male athlete of the
year award.
Farah, 33, secured a historic 'double double' by retaining both his 5,000m and 10,000m
Olympic titles at Rio 2016. Paula Radcliffe, in
2002, was the last British athlete to win one of
the IAAF's end-of-year awards.
Farah faces competition from the likes of
Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt - a nine-time
Olympic gold medallist - and South Africa's
Wayde van Niekerk.
Who are the nominees?
Men
Usain Bolt (Jamaica): Sealed the 'triple
triple' in Rio, winning his third Olympic title in
the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay.
Thiago Braz (Brazil): Set a new Olympic
record of 6.03m to beat defending champion
Renaud Lavillenie and claim a surprise Olympic
gold.
Ashton Eaton (USA): Became third man to
retain the Olympic decathlon title, following
Britain's Daley Thompson and USA's Bob
Mathias.
Mo Farah (GB): Only the second man to
retain both the 5,000m and 10,000m Olympic
titles.
Eliud Kipchoge (Kenya): Claimed
Olympic gold in Rio, four months after winning
the London Marathon.

Conseslus Kipruto (Kenya): Broke the

Olympic record on his way to 3,000m steeplechase gold this summer.
Omar McLeod (Jamaica): Claimed Jamaica's first Olympic 110m hurdles gold, to add
to his world indoor title from earlier this year.
David Rudisha (Kenya): Became the first
athlete since New Zealand's Peter Snell in 1964
to retain the men's Olympic 800m title.
Women
Almaz Ayana (Ethiopia): Added 10,000m
Olympic gold to the 5,000m world title she won
last year, breaking the 23-year-old world record
in the process.
Ruth Beitia (Spain): Won Olympic gold in
the high jump to add to the world indoor silver
medal she claimed earlier this year.
Vivian Cheruiyot (Kenya): Claimed
5,000m gold in an Olympic record at her fourth
Games.
Kendra Harrison (USA): Broke the 28year-old 100m hurdles world record, having
missed out on selection for the Rio Olympics.
Elaine Thompson (Jamaica): Claimed gold
in both the 100m and 200m in Rio.
Anita Wlodarczyk (Poland): Broke her
own world record to become Olympic champion in Rio - then broke it again two weeks later.
Sandra Perkovic (Croatia): Successfully
defended her Olympic discus title in Rio to extend her unbeaten run this season.

Reggae Boyz advance to

Gold Cup, Carib Cup semis

Kingston, Jamaica WI:

amaicas Reggae Boyz have qualified to
defend their Caribbean Cup title after
beating Suriname one 1-0 in their final qualifying match at the national stadium last
evening.
The Jamaicans ended the game with ten
players after defender Damion Lowe was
shown a straight red for stomping on an opponent in the 34th minute.
But they had already gotten the vital
goal within the first quarter of an hour,
thanks to Cory Burke's second international
goal.
The result means Jamaica tops Group 1
qualifiers ahead of Suriname and Guyana
and coach Theodore Whitmore was left
pleased. I must laud the players on their
performance this afternoon. We have seen it
during the week of training, they really
worked and it paid off, said Whitmore. The
victory also secured Jamaica's spot to the
next CONCACAF Gold Cup.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa:

ailed Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius
has been transferred to a prison adapted
for disabled inmates to serve the rest of his
sentence for murdering his girlfriend, a
South African official said Monday.
The Department of Correctional Services said the double amputee was moved
from Kgosi Mampuru II prison in the capital
Pretoria to Attridgeville Correctional Centre, just outside the city.

Luciano saga continues

Promoters demand
money back

by K'Shema Francis, iriefm.net

romoters in Europe are demanding

their money back after Luciano pulled
the plug citing that the tour organized by
his booking agent and longtime confidante,
Sonia Sterling and T-Boy from Germany
was dismal.
Luciano has since promised the promoters a new date but they are requesting
their money back. On Saturday, T-Boy
gave WTS the Scoop in an exclusive interview.
In a Facebook message, Luciano cancelled his 2016 Zion Awake Tour citing
haphazard organization as the reason behind his decision.
The European tour would see Luciano
making stops in Germany, Austria,
Switzerland, France, Holland and Italy.
The Zion Awake tour would have
been Lucianos first, since getting his US
visa cancelled in summer, when he tried to
cross the Canada-US border, with a concoction which contained a cannabis extract.

Lawyer and author feels heat on

book embracing Gay lifestyle

By Howard Campbell
Observer senior writer
Jamaican lawyer and author who
wrote a book to build bridges with the
gay community, says she has experienced
backlash since its release in August.
Audrey Thomas, a New York-based attorney, launched Does God Hate Homosexuals? No, God Cannot Hate, on August 20
at York College in Queens, New York.
The book was inspired by her evolving
views on same-sex relations after years of
scorning homosexual behaviour.
That change of heart has not gone
down well with the Jamaican community.
They have been surprisingly hostile. Many
questioned my own straightness, said 45year-old Thomas.
The third staging of her York College
event was severely affected. Most of the
usual supporters did not show up. We generally have an audience of 400-500 people;
this year we were lucky to get 70. I was

truly shocked at the level of hate I experienced, said Thomas, who noted that 90 per
cent of sponsors withdrew their support because the Jamaica Forum of Lesbians, AllSexuals and Gays (J-FLAG)s logo was on
her flyer. In an interview with the Jamaica
Observer in August, Thomas admitted to
once being violently homophobic.
But after successfully representing an
American lesbian couple in a civil case, her
thoughts on same-sex partnerships
changed.
Born in Kingston, Thomas migrated to
Brooklyn, New York in 1981. She has practised criminal and civil litigation in New

7 Ways to Include Everyone In the Holiday Cheer

Enunciate as you talk, but avoid the temptation to speak

overly slowly. Instead, speak at a moderate but steady rate.
Be patient and be prepared to repeat or rephrase your comments.
Remember that if you are feeling frustrated, your partner in
conversation may be, too. Keep your sense of humor so you
can enjoy the holiday together.

(Family Features)
olidays bring get-togethers filled with music, food and
conversation. However, for those who experience hearing loss, the season often takes on a whole different sound.
Those with hearing loss often end up feeling isolated from
the festivities, but there are ways you can make sure they feel
comfortable joining the fun.
A survey* by Rayovac, which was conducted online by
Harris Poll, found that 56 percent of Americans say talking
and catching up with family members is their favorite part of
family gatherings, but nearly one out of every five (19 percent) say they have experienced difficulty communicating
with someone who is hard of hearing.
If youll be escorting a family member with hearing loss
to a holiday event, be sure their hearing devices are in good
operating condition with batteries that are able to power all
of the devices features, like Rayovac. The hearing aid battery
company has also introduced the Gift of Hearing this holiday
season, a campaign in which a portion of proceeds from its
battery sales benefit the Starkey Hearing Foundation.
This holiday season, make the most of the opportunity
to share quality conversations with loved ones who have trouble hearing by following these simple tips from Shari Eberts
of livingwithhearingloss.com:
Get their attention before speaking by saying their name or
tapping them on the shoulder.
Give some context as to the topic of the conversation to help
them infer.
Make sure they can see your lips. Stand in a well-lit area and
be sure you are facing them directly, with your hand away
from your face while talking.
Know that background noise can provide difficult distractions. If youre hoping for more than a passing greeting, find
a quiet place where you can visit comfortably.

The History of Thanksgiving

raditionally, and in the public mind, the first Thanksgiving Day occurred in 1621 when the Plymouth Pilgrim
community joined in a feast with local Indians to celebrate
the first harvest that the colonists had reaped on American
soil. Indeed, 90 Indians and 53 Pilgrims feasted for three days
at that event, and it was an official day of giving thanks to
God for his blessings.
However, the colonists were only carrying on the Calvinist Protestant tradition of designating special public days of
thanksgiving for the blessings of the Almighty. It was not really something new in kind.
The feast probably did include turkey since William
Bradford informs us in his Of Plymouth Plantation that the
land had a "great store of wild turkeys, of which they took
many." Incidentally, there is indication that the colonists were
familiar with turkey from back in England, even though it
was a native American bird.
That is because the Spanish had brought back and popularized turkey in Europe in the 1600's, and in England, it had
become a major competitor to goose for Christmas dinners.
The exact date of this thanksgiving feast is uncertain, but it
seems to have happened in late September or early November.

Thanksgiving Traditions

Some of the main traditions of the season include: Providing free Thanksgiving dinners for the needy, holding food
drives, and giving charitable contributions in general.
The Salvation Army is especially famous for enlisting
volunteers to serve Thanksgiving dinner to the poor. Attending church services where congregants give thanks to God for
the year's blessings.
These are typically held the weekend before, the day of,
or the weekend after Thanksgiving Day. The saying of grace

moment of the holiday.
Feasting on large Thanksgiving dinners and on leftovers
for the week to come. Turkey is the centerpiece of the meal,
and it is usually baked or roasted. Some, however, now opt
to smoke or deep-fat-fry instead.
In-bird stuffing, homemade mashed potatoes with turkey
gravy, corn on the cob, butternut squash, candied yams, green
been casserole, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie are some
of the most traditionally eaten foods.

The Five Traits Of A Great Hair Stylist

1. Youre a good listener.

Finding success as a hair stylist means listening to your clients in more ways than one. We
all know the old saying: that hair stylists make
better therapists than the real deal. Its true that
many of your guests will love rehashing the
ups, downs, and dramas of their lives with you
(and chances are, youll have fun listening).
But the most significant act of listening youll
undertake as a stylist is during the initial consultation with your guest, before their service.

term, and can identify whether its a good fit

for the guest. And speaking of honesty: one
of the number one complaints salons receive
by guests is sticker shock because they didnt
know how much something would cost.

4. You possess technical skill

and manual dexterity.
All the honesty, creativity, and listening skills
in the world cant make up for a bad haircut.
Being a good stylist means committedly learning the ins and outs of several techniques
and staying hungry for more education and
training once you leave school. Weve all
heard practice makes perfect throughout our
lives, but it bears repeating because its true.
You have to make sure youre familiar with a
number of techniques and tools, that you work
on building stamina in your hands, and hone
your ability to keep your energy up while
working on your feet all day.

2. You are creative and visual, and you

know how to make your visions a reality.
Part of being a successful hair stylist means
staying on top of the latest trends, and the truly
great stylists have the skill to integrate those
trends into their clients personal style. At the
same time, being a slave to fashion can be so
clich. Your elevated taste and killer eye for
design should let you set a few trends of your
own. At the end of the day, what is most important is you can not only generate a vision,
but can execute it.
3. You are honest.
If a guest wants a look that you think wont
work for them whether due to the cut, the
color, or the fact that their lifestyle simply
doesnt allow for the necessary styling or

Adaptability is the crucible in which the first
four requisites come into play. An excellent

that somehow fill everyones lives. You never

NEW JERSEY
Prospect Park man robbed of
his car and sneakers in Paterson

PATERSON A 28-year-old resident from

Prospect Park was robbed at gunpoint on
crime-ridden North Main Street on Saturday,
police said.
The victim was standing outside his car
waiting for someone at about 4:15 a.m. when
a man with a gun confronted him, taking his
cash, phone, sneakers and keys, police said.

ohn Leadbeater, 59, Kearny, New Jersey,

was sentenced to 60 months in prison for
his role in a $13 million mortgage fraud scam
that used phony documents and straw buyers to make illegal profits on overbuilt condos in Wildwood and Wildwood Crest, New
Jersey.
Leadbeater previously pleaded guilty
before U.S. District Judge Jerome B. Simandle to a superseding indictment charging him
with conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
According to documents filed in the case
and statements made in court: Leadbeater and
his conspirators located condominiums over-

49

built by financially distressed developers in

Wildwood and Wildwood Crest, New Jersey.
They then recruited straw buyers from
New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Arkansas, and
California, to purchase those properties. The
straw buyers had good credit scores, but
lacked the financial resources to qualify for
the mortgage loans.
The conspirators created false documents, including loan applications that contained fraudulent financial and employment
information, to make the straw buyers appear
more credit-worthy and induce the lenders to
make the loans.

The suspect then fled, while the victim

went home to get another set of keys for his
car, a 2009 Dodge, police said. But when the
victim returned to the scene of the crime to
get his car, the vehicle was missing, police

Dating Scene is Frustrating

for Strong Young Woman

18 STREET HYPE NEWSPAPER NOV 1-18/NOV 19-30, 2016

Dear Divine Diva:

am a young woman hoping to find
"The One." But I have come to realize that I'm not the normal female. I
don't get manicures or go shopping. (I
hate shopping!) When I meet a guy, he
likes that I'm "me," but if we get serious, then I'm either "too independent,"
"too outspoken" or "not girly enough."
I don't want to change myself or
pretend to be someone I'm not. One
minute they like that I'm independent
and can fend for myself; the next they
don't like that I don't depend on them
to pay bills, etc.
Why is it always a double standard? Men like strong women until
they are with one. Then they can't handle it. Maybe I'm too much for the men
where I live. Is it possible for me to
find someone?
-Independent Female, Charleston, SC

Dear Independent Female:

Welcome to the wonderful world of
dating. While some may think of dating as a popularity contest, it's really
more like sifting for a gold nugget. It
takes a lot of people years to strike gold
-- and it's the same with dating. Is it
possible to find someone? Absolutely!
But it takes time, stamina and a sense
of humor to survive the process.

Dear Lonely Spouse:

It appears your wife is having an unusually hard time severing the umbilical cord with her mother, who
may not even be aware that her

you and Sandra are so far apart on

7 Tips for Healthy Dining Out

E
Reviewed by Taylor Wolfram, MS, RDN, LDN
ating at a restaurant doesn't have to sabotage your healthy diet. Tweet this Use
smart-eating strategies: Plan ahead, consider
the menu and choose foods carefully.

Preparation
Have a plan. Eat a light dinner if you ate a big
lunch that day. Or, if you know ahead of time
that you're going to a restaurant, plan to have
lighter meals during the day. Knowing menu
terms and cooking basics makes ordering easier, especially if you have special dietary
needs.
Choosing a Restaurant
Think ahead. Consider meal options at
different restaurants and look for places with
a wide range of menu items. Check online
menus, if available, for nutrition information
ahead of time.

Ordering
Be deliberate when ordering. Balance
your meal by including healthier selections
from all the different food groups such as lean
protein foods, low-fat dairy, fruits, vegetables
and whole grains. Look for freshly made entre salads that give you "balance in a bowl."
For example, entre salads with baked or
grilled chicken, beans or seafood provide protein along with fiber and other nutrients. Ask
for dressing on the side so you can control the
portion size.
For sandwich toppings, go with veggie
options including lettuce, tomato, avocado
and onion; if using condiments, choose
ketchup, mustard, relish or salsa.
Round out your meal by ordering
healthy side dishes, such as a side salad,
baked potato or fruit. Boost the nutritional
value of your baked potato by topping it with
vegetables, salsa or chili.

Substitute. Ask for a side salad with

dressing on the side to replace fries in a combination meal. Many restaurants honor requests, so don't be afraid to be assertive, ask
menu questions and make special requests to
meet your nutritional needs.
Control portions. Many restaurants
serve huge portions, sometimes enough for
two or three people. Eat a smaller portion and
bring leftovers home for another meal. Or,
order an appetizer in place of an entre and
add a small soup or salad.
Eating
Eat slowly. It takes about 20 minutes for
your brain to get the message from your
stomach that you are no longer hungry. Fast
eaters often are overeaters, while slow eaters
tend to eat less and are still satisfied.

Eating Out with Kids

Choose a restaurant that caters to children. This will increase the likelihood that a
restaurant has a healthy children's menu that
includes smaller portion sizes and meals designed to provide ample nourishment for
smaller bodies.
For new foods, offer a bite or two from
your order. Otherwise, let kids order their familiar favorites when they eat out. Pick two
or three suitable menu items and then let your
child pick one. Substitute healthier sides in
place of fries, such as carrots or apple slices,
or share an order of fries, and order plain
foods with sauce on the side.
Calcium is important at all ages, but especially for growing bones. To get more calcium, opt for plain or chocolate milk for a
beverage, or add a slice of cheese to their
sandwich. Choose dairy-based desserts such
as yogurt or a smoothie.

Make Marketing Manageable

Tips for small business owners, entrepreneurs

FAMILY FEATURES:
t may seem that anyone with the guts to
run their own small business should be
able to master marketing with ease. And yet
marketing strikes many small business owners with dread.
In fact, a common refrain from business
owners is: "I know my business is good, but
I have no idea how to market it." Recently,
The UPS Store conducted a survey of small
business owners to identify their concerns.
One-third of respondents said marketing or
branding their business was the biggest challenge they face.
To put it into perspective, marketing
their businesses topped other common concerns of business owners including lack of
time and lack of financial resources. Meanwhile, more than half of those surveyed said
marketing ranked "very high" or "extremely
high" on their list of key priorities.
This contradiction becomes more concerning when you factor in the role small
businesses play in the nation's overall business landscape. According to the Small Business Administration, small businesses
(companies with less than 500 employees)
provide 55 percent of all jobs and have provided 66 percent of all net new jobs since the
1970s.
The small business sector could be

marketing, said Marcus Lemonis, entrepreneur and host of CNBC's "The Profit." Yet
nearly 40 percent of respondents in The UPS
Store's survey agreed or strongly agreed that
they feel "overwhelmed" by the challenge.
"Any business owner who can make a
strong, persuasive pitch for the funding of
their business can probably do the same for
the products or services of that business,"
Lemonis said.
To help small businesses transfer the
skill of selling to funders to selling to cus-

tomers, Lemonis offers the following tips:

* Know your target customer. Just as
you played to the interests and likings of your
funders, you can do the same with potential
customers through strategic marketing.
* Recognize that the keys to success for
any small business are people, process and
product. Those funding your business will
want to know you have those three in order.
If you do, your customers will be more confident in your business, too.

* Understand that people are the cornerstone of your business. Find the right people
to make sure they're marketing and selling
your brand the way you would.
* Be vulnerable, be honest and communicate. This stands true for every aspect of
your business, including developing the next
steps of your marketing strategy. If you share
your business or your brand's story with a
genuine approach, your success will increase.
These are things most small business
owners can do. Yet there are also marketing
processes and skills that many small business
owners aren't familiar with and need help
from others to acquire.
Among those who can provide help are
The UPS Store's 4,500 locations across the
nation. These stores are independently
owned and operated, so store owners understand the challenge firsthand. Part of their
mission is to help local startups, entrepreneurs and small businesses solve their problems, including marketing, printing, shipping
and mailboxes.
"I encourage small business owners to
find new ways to break down the marketing
barrier and learn marketing processes that
will attract new customers and grow their
business," Lemonis said.
