Five definition of Sociology:

1. Sociology is the science of society and the social interactions taking place within it. It is
concerned with social interaction involving social acts, social relationships, social organizations,
social structures and social processes.
2. Sociology is the systematic study of social behavior and human groups. It focuses primarily on
the influence of social relationships upon peoples attitudes and behavior and on how societies are
established and change.
3. It deals with the study of patterns and processes of human relations.
4. It is concerned with what goes on between and among people and the patterned relationships
within social groups.

Importance of Sociology:

As an individual:
Sociology is important because it provides factual information about our society and different
aspect of our social life. Through sociology, we are now able to understand our society more objectively,
learn the application of scientific methodology and it has been instrumental in changing our attitude
towards human beings, since it has drawn our attention to the inherent value and dignity of man. Lastly, it
is also through the study of sociology that our whole outlook on various aspects has change.

As a member of the family:


Sociology provides information that enables us to understand and analyze the social factors
causing problems and further give some solution through scientific study of the society. It is through
sociology that scientific study of the great social institutions such as home and family, and the relation of
the individual to each other. Sociology helps us to understand the significance of a family and its
constituents: how to serve, conciliate and strengthen our relationship to one another.

As a Filipino:
Sociology is important to us, Filipino because it has made great contribution to enrich human
culture. Through sociology, we can now understand social phenomenon in the books to preserve the
cultural heritage. They preserve and give growth to the culture by writing information about it and teach it
to the students in the subject of sociology. It also helps us in assessing our resources by planning how to
have a proper assessment of human resources and ideas about the extent of social problems and
magnitude of labor involved in solving them.
