Nepals tourist capital is where most
people quickly head to after arriving in
Kathmandu, and most would agree that
Pokhara does live up to the hype. Its a serene
and picturesque hang-out town for those on
either side of many of Nepals best and most
famous treks, including the Annapurna circuit.
Fortunately, in addition to being pleasant
and attractive, Pokhara is also quite cheap.
Hotels can get a bit pricey during April, May,
October, and November, but even during those
times cheap rooms will be available if you plan
ahead a bit. Theres a boom in new hotels
going up, so prices should come down, if anything. Food and drinks are also great bargains in Pokhara,
especially considering the quality and choice available. Dozens of restaurants have nearly identical menus,
featuring foods from around the world in addition to the cheaper local fare. Beers are quite cheap too, as
are cocktails using the local rums.
Trekking can add significantly to the cost, although on a per-day basis most trips are still quite
cheap if you research and shop around. You can also get any kind of brand-name trekking gear you need
here, all at very competitive prices, so no worries if you dont have your full kit before arrival.

The capital of Vietnam is still far more
traditional than the larger Saigon in the south.
There arent a lot of must-see sites, but the
pleasant (though chaotic) city center makes up
for that, with excellent food and drink at very
low prices.
Most of the cheaper hotels are right in
the Old City, and more up-market hotels tend to
be in the nicer suburbs to the south and west.
Standards are higher than you might expect,
and many places have free Wi-Fi in the lobby or
even in all the rooms. Attractions cost almost
nothing by Western standards, so your
sightseeing budget goes a long way. As long as you avoid an organized bus tour then you can get by on a
tiny budget. The popular overnight trips to Halong Bay and multi-day trips to Sapa can range in price
greatly, and often the cheap versions are great, though its always a bit of a crapshoot.
Local food is extremely cheap by most standards, with full meals in tourist restaurants usually
costing between US$2 and 3, with cold beer adding around $1 each. Other alcohol is more expensive, but
still cheap compared to most places.

Ho Chi Minh City
is an incredible travel
bargain compared to
most of the rest of the
world, though its also
among
the
more
expensive
cities
in
Vietnam. Prices in Hanoi
are
similar,
and
everywhere else in the
country is at least a bit
cheaper, so regardless of
which big city you start in,
things will get better as
you go until you reach the
other one. Hoi An prices
are strangely low for food
and drinks and even
hotels, and its a major highlight for most visitors to Vietnam. Hotel prices in the crowded Pham Ngu Lao
area in District 1 are quite high for the country, and rooms tend to be small as well. Still, money goes a long
way, and everything else is quite cheap as well.
Food and drinks are similar in that better quality and bargains can be found in pretty much every
other major tourist city in Vietnam, and yet compared to anywhere outside of India or Southeast Asia
everything is a bargain.
Another key area where this city shines is that the main attractions are either free (markets,
neighborhoods), or very cheap. Even half-day and full-day tours outside of the city to the Mekong Delta or
the Cu Chi Tunnels can be had for the price of a beer or two in almost any other city.

Chiang Mai is Thailands second largest
and second most popular cultural city, after the
capital of Bangkok. The atmosphere is
noticeably different, even when not considering
the lovely mountain setting.
The city is also one of the worlds great
travel bargains, with all range of hotels being
quite cheap by international standards, and
Chiang Mai hostels are, of course, even
cheaper. You can get rooms at high-standard 3star Chiang Mai hotels for around the price of a
hostel bed in northern Europe.
Most of the attractions are also free or
quite cheap, so visitors can use much of the rest of their budget on the inexpensive souvenirs at the various
markets. Food and drinks are available in all price ranges, with plenty of great street food and local
restaurants having fantastic bargains.

Goa isnt a city
its a state of mind. Its
also a state in India,
which contains several
dozen small towns,
many of which are
along the beach and
attract big numbers of
tourists from November
through
March.
Compared to most of
the rest of India prices
in Goa are relatively
expensive,
but
compared to nearly
anywhere else this
place is a bargain.
During the peak travel weeks from Christmas to New Years the prices do go up and hotels are
packed so if your schedule is flexible that is the time to avoid, or be prepared to pay more. Still, hotels in
Goa are cheap and fairly good standard for a beach resort area. Hotels at the bottom end of the range will
be quite minimalistic though, so be prepared. Also, choose the city you stay in carefully. Some are more
known for parties and others are more known for family holidays.
The main attractions are sitting around on the beach all day, and going to bars and clubs or even
beach raves at night. All of it is either free or quite cheap, so once you get here you can get by on very little.
Even the food and drinks at the many beach restaurants are in line with places in town, so having drinks
and a meal on the beach is definitely a bargain compared to Europe.

Nepal is most famous as the home of
half of Mount Everest, and those actually
climbing the mountain, or to the main elevated
base camp, will have to deal with those notinsignificant expenses. But those just coming to
admire the city and its Buddhist culture will find
it to be very cheap by international standards.
Prices for hotels and hostels are nearly
as cheap as those in smaller cities in India,
which are generally the lowest on the planet.
Its worth noting that hotels and guesthouses at
the absolute bottom end of the price spectrum
will be quite minimalistic, to put it kindly, but
paying a bit more gets you something not bad at all. Of course there are now a number of expensive hotel
resorts meant for those on much larger budgets, so nearly all price ranges are catered for.
Transportation and attractions in the city are also very cheap by nearly anyones standards, so your
main expenses will be guided trekking excursions or adventure sports, if you choose to do them. Food and
drinks are also very cheap by most standards so this continues to be a great stop for budget-minded
travelers as well as those who can afford the best.

Vientiane deserves its reputation as one
of the most mellow capital cities on earth, but
its also more modern than many people expect
based on older travel guides. There are now
some chain restaurants and newer shopping
centers, plus a large waterslide park opened in
2008.
The city is yet another great bargain for
travelers to Southeast Asia, with nearly
everything cheaper than Bangkok, and more
along the lines of Hanoi. Being a smaller city,
there arent loads of hotels in Vientiane, but
fortunately most of them are quite cheap and
friendly. The main attractions in the city cost
little or nothing, so it should be quite easy to
keep your budget intact once youve found a place to sleep.
Eating on a tight budget in Vientiane is quite easy, as youd have to go out of your way to find a
restaurant that even approaches North American or European prices. Local dishes based on rice and
noodles are cheapest, but sandwiches, pasta dishes, and even pizza can be found at good prices. The
local lager called Beerlao is served everywhere at very low prices, while the Lao-lao rice whisky is even
cheaper.

Luang Prabang deserves its reputation
as one of Southeast Asias most charming
cities. The mixed colonial architecture plus the
many picturesque temples add to an ambiance
that is unusually romantic and pleasantly laid
back. Theres a good reason why its now Laos
most popular tourist city.
By Southeast Asia standards some
aspects of Luang Prabang are quite expensive,
but by any other standards its still cheap and a
great bargain. There are even a handful of very
cheap hotels suited for a backpacker budget,
but dont expect much quality at the bottom
end. Plenty of lovely guesthouses are all over
town, at a range of prices, plus a few luxurious larger hotels.
This city has far more fancy and expensive restaurants than Vientiane or anywhere else in the
country, but there are plenty of cheaper places as well. Drinks are also quite cheap in most places,
especially for those who like fresh fruit juice or Beerlao. Tours and attractions can add up a bit if you arent
careful, at least by area standards, particularly with tuk-tuks and boat drivers insisting on much higher
prices than elsewhere in the region.

Colombo is Sri Lankas capital and
home to its largest international airport, but that
doesnt mean you should plan on spending any
real time here. There are no checklist
attractions and the city is short on charm as
well so its better to spend most of your Sri
Lanka time elsewhere. With that in mind, the
prices listed here for food and drinks and
transportation are valid for the whole country.
Sri Lanka is quite cheap overall and its
good value even compared to neighboring
countries, but it does lack a real budget traveler
infrastructure. In other words, there are very
few hostels and 1-star hotels anywhere in the country. The good news is that standards for 2-star places
are good so those sharing a room can still get great deals.
Food can be incredibly inexpensive if you eat rice and curry like most locals, or even cheaper if you
stick with the short eats (finger foods) that can be filling and delicious as well as safe. Beer and local
spirits are well priced, though they are hard to find unless you put in some effort.

Delhi is a rather mysterious city, partly
because it completely surrounds the small (and
more famous) district of New Delhi. This is a
huge metropolis that most people find shocking
upon arrival, with conspicuous displays of
poverty and decay through most of the city.
Compared to the rest of India, except for
Mumbai, Delhi is relatively expensive as well.
Its really best to stay for a few days at the most
and spend more time in smaller and more
interesting cities. Hotels and hostels in Delhi
are not particularly cheap, except for perhaps in
the backpacker ghetto of Paharganj.
Good news is that most of the citys attractions are free or cheap, and that you can (and probably
should) hire a private car with a driver for a very affordable sum.
Food can be quite cheap if you are happy to try the stuff sold at street stalls all over town, but aircon tourist restaurants will definitely eat into your budget. Alcohol is tough to get in most of the city, though
people at your hotel can always arrange to deliver it for a small fee.

Phnom Penh is yet another great travel
bargain in Southeast Asia. Cambodia has its
own currency the Riel but all ATMs
dispense US dollars and nearly everything is
priced in USDs, so you are only likely to deal
with riels as small change in place of coins.
Generally this city is more expensive than
Vietnam, and similar to Thailand, but for most
Westerners everything will seem cheap
anyway.
Hotels in Phnom Penh can be incredibly
cheap, though spending just a bit more money
will get you a nicer place that is likely to be
worthwhile. High end hotels arent much
cheaper than they are elsewhere, but mid range places can have great quality and be good bargains.
At most restaurants youll see an emphasis on Western food, which is often quite good compared to
elsewhere in SE Asia, but local dishes are also on most menus and are usually even better bargains. Draft
beer, specifically Angkok Beer, is cheap and cold all over, and often on a happy hour pricing scheme.
Bottled beer and hard alcohol arent quite as cheap. Unless you want to hit the firing range near the Killing
Fields, all the attractions in Phnom Penh are quite cheap as well, and many are free.

Yangon (formerly known as Rangoon) is
the former capital and by far the largest city in
Burma/Myanmar. Since the semi-official tourism
boycott was lifted in 2012 after the country
started with democratic reforms, things have
been changing rapidly. As of now the tourism
infrastructure is weak compared to its
Southeast Asian neighbors, but thats part of
the charm to some of the travelers whove
already made a visit. Our friends at Travelfish

with their other expert SE Asia content. Things
for tourists are generally cheap, even with
prices rising almost on a monthly basis. Food
and drinks are some of the cheapest available in the region as long as you eat street food like nearly all the
locals. Inevitably, more tourist-oriented restaurants will appear and prices in those are always much more
than the outdoor cuisine.
The tricky part at this point is the hotel scene, as it barely existed only a few years ago. There are
very few cheap hotels in Yangon, and those in the lower price ranges tend to be poor quality. Youll likely
have to pay much more than youd expect for a Western standard room here. As of now there are no
proper hostels in Yangon, although some cheap hotels do have a few dorm beds. You should also be
prepared for foreigner prices at attractions and elsewhere that are much higher than locals pay. This is
fairly common in this region and the bottom-line price is still low by international standards, but it really
bothers some people anyway. Change money at the airport for the best rates, and stock up on pristine US
banknotes before you go if you can.

As delightful and worthwhile as it is, Hoi
An is still quite cheap, even by Vietnamese
standards. Hotel standards are quite high for
the star levels youll see, with even 1-star hotels
usually having air-con, cable TV, fridge, and
sometimes even in-room Wi-Fi included. If you
are up for a bit of a splurge then you can find a
place with manicured grounds and/or a
swimming pool.
Food and drinks are highlights of a visit
to Hoi An, and quality tends to be high in the
many restaurants with English-language menus
that cater to tourists. You could save a bit of
money eating along with locals in the places with plastic furniture, but at these prices most tourists are
happy to go to places where they are more relaxed and comfortable.
Beer in particular is very cheap, with the local La Rue lager usually the cheapest option, but the
other major lagers as well as the Asian-brewed Heineken are here too. Wine isnt quite as much of a
bargain by comparison, but mixed drinks start at reasonable prices for those who dont like beer. The
Vietnamese vodka is also easy to find by the bottle at shockingly low prices.
Tours of My Son and other nearby sites are available everywhere, including your hotel front desk
and many travel agencies throughout the city center. Prices tend to be standard at each place, but
bargaining cant hurt.

Mumbai feels completely insane when you
first arrive, and that feeling may never go away.
From a traveler standpoint its definitely a city of
contrasts. With over 20 million people in the area
its surprising that the tourist infrastructure still
isnt well built out yet. This is a major business
travel hub, and with space at such a premium in
the city center it means that budget hotels are
hard to find, and also far more expensive than
youd
expect.
The
pleasant
southern
neighborhood of Colaba is where youll find most
non-business hotels, and most of the cheaper
hotels even in that neighborhood feel like they are
falling apart.
If you are coming to India then you should definitely spend a day or two or three in Mumbai, but
probably not any more than that. With the exception of Delhi, which suffers from a similar situation, you can
find hotels starting well under US$10 that are nice, and rooms in houses as low as US$1. Plus the real
magic of India can not be found in its crowded mega-cities.
Good news about Mumbai is, except for hotels, most things here are quite cheap. Meals on the
street can be found for practically pennies, and good local restaurants start just a bit more than that. Many
of the most interesting things to see in the city are free as well so really once you find a hotel you can afford
then everything else is very affordable.

busy airport usually has

flights, and once you are

that the absolute bottom
end gets you a low
standard that isnt found
many other places. Spending a bit more can get you something fairly nice, and things get better and better
the more you are able to spend. The transportation and attractions cost very little as well, so once you are
situated you can keep yourself entertained for days on a very low budget. And of course food is not only
excellent in Bangkok, but its famously cheap as well. Freshly prepared dishes from street stalls can be
found all day and well into the night, with meals costing around US$1 and up, and restaurants in the city
dont charge much more for a comfortable seat and good service. Compared to elsewhere in Southeast
Asia, getting drunk here can be expensive, with wine and spirits being particularly steep. Budget-minded
party people can save money by buying the first couple of rounds from one of the thousands of mini
markets and starting in the hotel or hostel. Those staying more than a couple days should seriously think
about some of these great and cheap day trips from Bangkok.

Jakarta has an unusual reputation
compared to most big cities in Southeast Asia.
Many people recommend skipping it altogether,
but its the main hub for reaching almost
anywhere else in Indonesia (except Bali) so
many people stop here anyway. Jakarta is
enormous, crowded, sprawling, and always hot
and humid. On a positive note, it has excellent
shopping and nightlife, and things tend to be
pretty cheap.
There arent many hostels so its fortunate that hotel prices tend to be quite low for what you get. In
fact, Jakarta isnt a bad place for a little splurge, since backpackers in pairs can often score a great deal at
a 3-star hotel for only a bit more than a hostel dorm.
As long as you like Indonesian food (as so many do) then you can eat very affordably in Jakarta.
There are also plenty of fast food chains and international options, but the best deals are always on the
local stuff. Beer is quite cheap as well, as long you enjoy the ubiquitous Bintang lager.

places on Pub Street and the small alley nearby. Draft beer in particular is a great bargain, with happy hour
deals at most places, but you can get wine, spirits, and exotic cocktails at decent prices as well.

Phuket is an island in the south of

resort areas. Its now almost as popular as

Taken as a whole, Phuket is also the
most expensive part of Thailand for visitors.
There are definitely some affordable options,
especially for those who are willing to stay a bit
inland, but the deluxe resorts in Phuket are
definitely expensive compared to anywhere
else in Southeast Asia. The high season is from
December through March, and there are so
many resorts that competition keeps prices reasonable, but the rest of the year Phuket has the cheapest 5star resorts in the world.
Once you have a room its possible to enjoy yourself and not spend much more, as budget food and
drink options are available not far from most hotels, but if you want to snorkel or scuba dive or sail, its
going to cost you. If you are on a backpacker budget then youll find the cheapest options in Phuket Town
rather than along the beaches, but it also means riding buses back and forth each day, which takes some
of the fun out of visiting a resort island.

even get proper lessons for less that youd pay in most other surf spots. Food and drinks are also very
cheap by most standards, though not as cheap as in mainland Southeast Asia. Simple and delicious meals
start around US$1 each, and for not much more than that you can get something really filling and
sometimes even fancy. Beer is the cheapest drinking option, and its the most popular, but mixed drinks are

Taipei is an enormous city with things in
nearly every price range, but for most tourists it
might appear to be on the expensive side, at
least compared to mainland China, though
certainly cheaper than Japan. Its also quite a
bit more expensive than the rest of Taiwan, so
those touring the island can find reasonable
bargains at their other stops.
Hotels and hostels in Taipei are of
reasonable value, and standards tend to be
fairly high, even at most of the places near the
lower end of the spectrum. Food and drinks
also come in a wide spectrum on the price
scale, with famous street food and casual eats
at amazingly low prices considering the quality.
However, finding restaurants with English language menus in the lower price ranges is extremely
challenging.
The main attractions are reasonably priced compared to similar offerings elsewhere, so its possible
to get by on very little once you arrive if your budget is tight. Using public transportation also cuts way down
on costs, so even backpackers can manage Taipei if they can find a good hostel or cheap hotel.

the backpacker set. Boat Station 3 is cheapest while Boat Station 1 is mostly 4-star resorts.
There are fast-food restaurants and many Filipino places where all the locals eat that are quite
cheap, but once you sit down at a restaurant on or near the beach the price goes up. However, competition
is high so you can even get an all-you-can-eat buffet on the beach for a modest cost if you look around. For
drinking there are fruit juice stands everywhere and many cheap bars where San Miguel bottles can be
very cheap on all-day happy hour deals.

Hotels in Kuala Lumpur can be great

1-star hotel in London. Lower-end hotels and even hostels offer quite good value in Kuala Lumpur as well.
Standards are generally high in all but the absolute cheapest hotels.
Partly since this isnt a hugely popular tourist destination for Westerners, most of the attractions are
priced more for an Asian budget, so things should seem cheap to most people. Food can be another great
bargain in this city, with a wide variety of cuisines available in all price ranges. If you head to the outdoor

with similar services. Strangely enough, the hostels in Hong Kong almost all tend to get horrible reviews, so
dont expect much.
Hong Kong is loaded with Michelin-star restaurants and some very pricey options, but its also home
to thousands of neighborhood noodle joints that are good and cheap. Alcohol in proper bars here is very
expensive so its poor value for budget travelers. Instead you can do like the locals and buy cheap drinks at
7-Eleven and consume them (legally) on the streets in the nightlife districts. As long as you dont plan on
going to Disneyland or the other super-commercial options then the attractions in Hong Kong are
reasonably priced. More good news is that food can be quite cheap if you stick more to street stalls and
other places where locals eat, but if you go to places that cater mostly to Western tourists you can spend a
bundle. The Hong Kong Free Walking Tour is a great way to see a lot of the city in a few social hours.

Singapore is definitely
one of Asias jewels, and those
who are expecting a police state
are always surprised when they
actually arrive and find it all to
seem very normal. In recent
years, Singapore has gone from
one of Asias most expensive
cities to one of the worlds most
expensive cities, although its
still possible to visit on a
backpacker budget if you know
what you are doing.
Hotels and even hostels
in Singapore are now even more
expensive than those in Tokyo,
so this will be your biggest
expense. Youll find some
cheaper places mixed in the listings, but they will all be in inconvenient neighborhoods and often there will
be no window in the room. For a proper 3-star hotel (with a window), youll spend a small fortune. Food in
Singapore is one of the main highlights, with its famous hawker stalls all over the city preparing excellent
and generous meals for a very low cost, in very sanitary conditions. Drinks can be a bit expensive by Asian
standards, but happy hour bargains can be found. Restaurants meant for tourists can be expensive,
especially in the main hotel districts.
Transportation is cheap and most of the attractions are cheap or free, so really once you arrive and
find a hotel you can afford then its possible to have a great time without spending much more, unless, of
course, youve come mainly to shop.

many hawker centers around the clock.
Your lunch and breakfast choices will be the
same, so this assumes a larger midday meal.
Assuming you want a sit-down dinner in a real
restaurant, things here get more expensive.
Big bottles of Tiger and Anchor are this cheap
at hawker centers and some Chinese
restaurants. Bars charge double or triple this.
Mixed drinks tend to be pricey, even at casual
bars.
McDonald's is one of many fast-food options
in the city.
These collections of vendors are the best deal
in Singapore. With a light appetite you can eat
cheaply, or stuff yourself with multiple dishes

Macau was a Portuguese territory for a
long time until its recent turnover to China, and
it still acts independently in many ways,
similarly to nearby Hong Kong. Its now known
mostly as the gambling capital of the world, and
a major destination for Hong Kong and China
locals.
Before the recent casino boom Macau
was known for its unique Portuguese colonial
influences, and most of that remains even
though its overshadowed by huge hotels. Its
still easy enough to stay in one of those older
sections and keep your budget under control.
Casino hotels in Macau can be pricey, especially on weekends, but budget accommodation does
exist as well. Food from traditional stand-alone restaurants and street stalls can be quite cheap, while
restaurants inthe fancy hotels is anything but.
Macau has its own currency, but weve used Hong Kong dollars here since they are essentially the
same value.

Food and drink
have a reputation for
being outrageously expensive in Tokyo, but thats a bit misleading. If you want to eat in upscale restaurants
or hotels then youll pay dearly, but if you are interested in eating bowls of noodles or rice, like most of the
locals do each day, then it can be done on a more modest budget. They key to surviving cheaply in Tokyo
is being flexible and behaving like a local while you are there.
Transportation is reasonably priced, especially if you opt for the all-day metro ticket. The city is
basically a collection of villages so its hard to see much on foot because each central area is spaced out
from the others.
