Facts & Figures

The Technical Possibilities

wedi Building Panels are odorless and chemically

inert. Some harsh chemicals or organic solvents may
cause damage to the cementitious coating or the
foam core. Because the panels have no food value,
they never attract plant or animal life or facilitate the
growth of microorganisms.
Thanks to the properties of the extrusion process
that produce closed cell foam coupled with the
hydrophobic nature of polystyrene, the foam core of
the wedi Building Panel has exceptional resistance
to water and water vapor. As proof, these panels
meet the stringent standards of ASTM and ANSI
testing for waterproofing and are suitable as part of
a waterproof installation when seams and fastener
heads are properly treated.

In addition many prefabricated product systems

are made from the wedi Building Panel such as
our U-Curbs, Shower Seats or Soap Niches.

Flexible Building Panels

The flexible Building Panels are supplied factorycut, enabling individual shapes and endless design
possibilities, e.g. curves, serpentine lines, etc. to be
achieved.

Building Panels for Balconies, Patios

and Terraces
These Building Panels, designed either sloped or flat,
are primarily used outdoors, in particular on extruded
platforms on buildings exteriors. In addition to use on
balconies and terraces, they can be used in a variety
of applications, whether on transverse or longitudinal
slopes, or as stepboards.

Technical Services

The Ideal Base for Tiles

The wedi Building Panel includes a CFC-free, blue core made from extruded polystyrene rigid
foam. The rigid foam is reinforced with fiberglass on both sides and coated with synthetic polymer
resin mortar, making the wedi Building Panel the ideal base for laying tiles using the thin-bed
process. It can be applied to virtually any substructure and is impermeable to water, heat-insulating,
versatile, lightweight and stable.

wedi Building Panel

Applications

wedi Building Panels offer nearly limitless installation capabilities, thanks to the wide range of
thicknesses and compatibility with virtually any substructure. Likewise, because theyre innately
lightweight, waterproof and dimensionally stable, wedi Building Panels are fast and simple to
work with, allowing for versatility in terms of applications. Whether fixed directly to existing
tile coverings (be they on load-bearing or non-load-bearing substructures) or used in providing
smooth transitions to traditional materials, finishes or details, wedi Building Panels install in just
one step, compared to the multi-step installation required with conventional cement board and
separate waterproofing product. When it comes to waterproofing, wedi Building Panels are
highly competitive compared to conventional waterproofing methods.

Wall Application in Showers

and Wet Areas

wedi Building Panels on Tub Walls

Developed for absolute workability, the wedi system is easily applied directly to stud walls with wedi
fasteners (screws and washers with tabs). After the panels are secured and the seams are sealed, tiling may
commence immediately. This means that a bare wall can be prepared, waterproofed and ready to tile in a
fraction of the time required by traditional methods.
When applied to the wall, wedi Building Panels may be fixed perpendicular or parallel to the framing,
saving time and reducing the frequency of joints. The panel can be fastened simply into place with wedi
screws or nails and all panel joints butted tightly. The wedi fastener is set right into the joint where
the washer head presses both panel edges together and allows for the flush transition. If a waterproof
installation is required, all joints and fastener points should be treated with wedi polyurethane sealant or
wedi waterproof sealing tape.

Using only a utility knife, wedi

Building Panel is effortlessly cut
and shaped.

A continuous 1/2 bead of wedi

joint sealant is applied on the foam
edges of a wedi Building Panel
before another panel is joined by
butting tightly.

Apply 1 wedi fastener per every

12, with an extra fastener applied
directly in the seam to provide a
flush transition. On a ceiling, apply
1 wedi fastener per every 6. The
washer heads are dimpled below
the surface of the wedi Building
Panel.

All excess wedi sealant is spread

flat over all joints using a putty
knife. Where needed, an extra
bead of sealant is applied on top
of the joints and spread flat. The
joints should be covered a full 3/4
on both sides of the seam.

Because of its waterproof nature, the wedi Building Panel is the natural choice for use in wet
areas. wedi Building Panels can be applied directly to studs or over gypsum products to create a
waterproof substrate for tile and also can be used on tub decks and backsplashes to quickly place
tub surrounds. The material can easily be scored and shaped to provide radius surfaces on tub
skirts and does not scratch tubs or fixtures during installation.
The dimensions of the wedi Building Panels make for quick installations in standard five foot tubs.
Laid horizontally, the sheet will span the full five foot length of the tub. At the head and foot of
the tub, the panel is secured to the wall verticallywhere the three foot width provides the perfect
dimension for a tile-ready tub surround. The wedi Building Panel may be notched for the flange
of a tub to provide a plumb and even surface for tiled walls.

Flush Transitions
to Drywall

wedi Building Panel Over

Wood Subfloor

wedi Building Panels are impermeable to water

and do not require an additional waterproof
coating for applications in heavy-duty wet
areas. At 1/2 or 5/8 thick, these panels can
achieve flush transitions with adjacent drywall
surfaces and can be safely, simply connected
to the drywall using wedi joint sealant or
sealing tape. Additionally, wedi Building Panels
provide thermal insulation, preventing the
unpleasant feeling of cold walls in the shower
area and reducing the build-up of steam and
condensation. Of course, water vapor rises
in steamy showers and might attack drywall
ceilings; thus, be sure to consider using wedi
Building Panels throughout your whole wet
areaincluding wall and ceiling.

wedi Building Panels provide excellent substrates for interior floors. Theyre suitable for extreme
commercial as well as residential use, as proven in the widely recognized Robinson Floor Test
(ASTM C627), in which the wedi Building Panels earned the heavy-duty commercial use rating.
When applied over a wooden substrate, wedi Building Panels act as a waterproof membrane and
create a superior bonding surface for ceramic tile. In addition, the thermally insulating qualities
make these boards superb candidates for installations incorporating floor-heating systems. The
1/4 and 1/2 materials can be used in flooring applications.

To apply wedi Building Panels over a wood subfloor, the floor must be clean and free of debris.
A modified mortar is applied to the floor with a 1/4 x 1/4 V- or U-notch trowel to provide a
ribbed bed. The wedi Building Panels are then laid into the mortar. All joints should be staggered
so that no seam continues throughout the length of the floor. After the mortar has set, fasteners
are applied at the rate of eight per square yard (sixteen per sheet). All seams should be taped with
alkali resistant fiberglass mesh tape, wedi sealing tape or wedi polyurethane sealant before tiling
begins.

Align the wedi Building Panel with your connecting drywall area using
the appropriate panel thickness.

Simply spread polymer modified

wedi Building Panels | Flooring Applications

wedi Building Panel Over

Concrete Subfloor

When installed over concrete, wedi Building Panels function as a crack-isolation membrane, as
cracks are not likely to transfer through the polystyrene core of the boards. The polystyrene foam
also acts as a moisture barrier; thus, when the seams are properly treated, the system is 100%
waterproof. The wedi Building Panels are also used as thermal insulation, especially when installed
underneath electric heating and floor warming systems. Heating cables and mats are typically
embedded and encapsulated in a layer of tile adhesive mortar or self-leveling mortar. Once cured,
the installer sets tile in another combed bed of tile adhesive mortar on top. (Note: Please contact
heating system manufacturer for proper installation methods over backerboard and never install
heating and floor warming systems underneath wedi systems to avoid heat being trapped.)
Produced with less than a +/-1/32 variance of thickness, wedi Building Panels will provide a
true surface on which to adhere floor tiles. wedi underlayments have passed the Robinson Floor
Test (ASTM 627) with a heavy-duty commercial use rating. To apply wedi Building Panels over
concrete, the floor must be clean and free of debris. Modified mortar, combed through with a
5/16 notch trowel, will then provide a ribbed bed on which the wedi Building Panels will be
laid. All joints should be staggered so that no seam continues throughout the length of the floor.
After the mortar has set, alkali resistant fiberglass mesh tape, or wedi sealing tape or wedi
polyurethane sealant should be applied to all seams, then tiling can begin.

Underfloor Heating Systems

wedi Building Panels as Underlayment

wedi Building Panels are suited for use beneath underfloor heating systems. The wedi Building
Panel insulation properties keep the heat away from the ground and guide it straight into the
room, whether you have a warm-water heating or electric system.

wedi Building Panels | Balco

Setting Up Balcony and Patio

Constructions
The wedi Balco Building Panel is a great solution for tile balconies and terraces. Many people shy
away from using tiles on balconies and terraces because of potential complications, yet the wedi
Balco Building Panel is proven to be an effective solution for these unique installations. The Balco
can be used on almost all firm and critical balcony subsurfaces, making it an ideal substructure
element for perfect tiling. Thanks to its specially designed coating, even this layer of the panel
does not absorb water (eliminating freezing issues), reduces stresses and does not require any extra
drying time.

Installing Over Old Tile or Concrete Surfaces

Remove damaged tiles from old

tiled coveringsand make good the
damaged areasusing a medium

Additional Exterior Applications

For more than a quarter century, wedi Building Panels have been used in exterior applications.
The regular Building Panel, when used in combination with low absorbing adhesives, grout and
tile, adds untold benefits. Now wedi introduces an advanced product line, the Balco, specially
engineered for installation with common exterior grade adhesives and grout.

When tile adhesives, grout and tiles fail under extreme climate conditions,
wedi BALCO always adds value to your facade:

1
Lay the first Balco (Balco with
slope from 3/4 to 1-1/2) onto
the concrete substrate bonding it
with exterior grade tile adhesive.
On wooden surfaces, an additional
layer of wedi 1/4 Building
Panels, fastened with wedi
fasteners (at a rate of 1 per every
sq. ft.) and exterior grade thinset.
The Balco Panels are set in exterior
grade thinset on top of this layer.

Over sloped surfaces, wedi Balco

Flat Building Panel can be used.
The installation is identical with the
Balco sloped Building Panels as
shown above. In mild, dry climate
regions, a prior layer of 1/4

Niches for shampoo bottles and other utensils

are convenient and decorative in any shower.
In the past, the methods for installing these
tileable features have been difficult, as the use
of conventional backer board with supplemental
waterproofing often proved less than effective.
However, prefabricated wedi Niches, innately
waterproof in construction, can be installed in a
clean fashion within minutes. Its also possible to
cut to size and install custom niches using wedi
1/2 Building Panels because they cut cleanly
and are easily sealable over the edges.

Prefabricated wedi Niches, made of 1/2 Building Panels, install safely and quickly while also
integrating into the wall panel assembly with wedi fasteners for completely flush transitions.
This is in contrast to so many plastic or metal niches that install with flanges against or over
wall panels, making it necessary to skim coat and even this area before tiling.

Fundo: The Total Solution

There are many ways to prepare and waterproof a shower
for ceramic tile. Traditional methods are time consuming
and difficult to do properly. Newer, experimental methods
commonly contain material flaws and suffer from a
poor track record of successful installations. Failures in
showers amount to millions of dollars lost to contractors,
homeowners and builders. Water damage leads to mold
and mildew issues, which in turn increase warranty costs
and heighten the number of unsatisfied homeowners.
The wedi Fundo Shower Base is the ideal solution to
this long-standing problem. The Fundo is a one step
waterproofing system that offers a no risk, easy to install
alternative to traditional and experimental methods. The
wedi Fundo base, composed of a closed cell extruded
polystyrene foam, is 100% waterproof. With its coating
of modified cement slurry and fiberglass mesh, the base is
also exceptionally strong and rigid.
Used in conjunction with wedi Building Panels on
walls, the wedi Fundo Shower Base ends multiple
installation steps and eliminates the need for materials
used in conventional installationsno more pre-sloping
base liners, mud beds, waterproofing membranes and
the weephole drain. It also eliminates risks related to
conventional installations such as base liner cracks,

clogged weepholes and mold growth in mud beds. These

prefabricated wedi shower pans help installers reduce
installation time of shower bases from 2-3 days to 30
minutes. All wedi shower substrate installations are tileready the same day.
Importantly, the wedi systems save 80% of the weight
that conventional systems add to building structures
and offer thermal insulation value behind the tile. The
Fundo Shower Base can be easily cut to size or extended
using pre-sloped extension panels to make it fit the exact
shower size.
For over 25 years, wedi has produced waterproof
materials for ceramic tile installations and today were
the worldwide market leader for waterproof foam core
underlayments. With a commitment to offer system
solutions, wedi uses cutting edge technology and the
finest materials available to provide unparalleled quality.
wedi has developed shower accessories, curbs, niches,
benches and seats to be used in conjunction with the
wedi Building Panel and Fundo Shower Base to offer the
only complete tile-ready, waterproof shower system on
the market.

wedi Steam Rooms | Residential and Commercical

wedi Steam Rooms

Residential and Commercial Use

When wedi systems and Building Panels are used in steam shower applications, youre assured
superior performance for saturated water vapor exposure in warm temperature conditions. Properly
installed, wedi systems aid in eliminating the threat of water vapor transmission through walls that
can cause deterioration and mold. wedi systems will further add insulation to steam showers so
that temperature difference exposure between the warm, humid inside of showers and the cold,
low humidity outside will be kept at a minimum. Temperature differentiation causes vapor to move
towards the colder side, but wedi Building Panels, a vapor retarder, stops this shift from occurring.
Vapor pressure and exposure can take place at different levels of severity, and wedi recommendations address this issue accordingly. Beyond a few specific recommendations, the wedi steam room
system is installed in adherence to wedis methodology of waterproofing joints and fastener points.

wedi Steam Rooms | Residential and Commercical

Residential Steam Room (square size max 4 x 4 ft.)

wedi Steam Rooms install similar to a regular shower application using 1/2 panels with
sealant in between joints. Sealant should also be used to cover all fasteners. Where there is
a cold exterior wall, install wedi 2 Building Panels to ensure proper thermal insulation
to minimize the climate differential. It is recommended to select dense tile or stone with low
absorption for tiling purposes in steam room settings. Regarding setting materials, epoxy-based
tile adhesives are recommended by manufacturers for steam room applications. Fill the grout
joints using solid epoxy grout, recommended for steam room applications by the manufacturer.
Epoxy thinsets and grouts offer notable benefits in that they do not allow vapor to condensate
between tile and wedi system products as do standard thinsets and cement grouts;
ease of cleaning and color sustainability are further advantages. Commercial application
recommendations should be followed for steam rooms greater than 4 x 4 ft.

Commercial Steam Room (square size > 4 x 4 ft.)

wedi Steam Rooms install similar to a regular shower application using 2 Building Panels
with sealant inbetween notch connection (shiplap) joints. Sealant should also be used to
cover all fasteners. When tiling commences, choose a dense tile or stone with low absorption.
Setting materials used should be solid epoxy-based tile adhesive and solid epoxy grout, as
recommended for steam room application by the manufacturer. In applications > 6 x 6 ft.,
epoxy resin* should be applied over the entire interior surface of wedi steam room systems
in two coats before tile or stone is set using epoxy adhesive or modified tile adhesive as
recommended for steam room applications by the manufacturer. Epoxy grout should always be
used in steam room installations.

General Tips and Recommendations for installing wedi Steam Rooms:

Build a slope into the ceiling so that condensed water can run down toward walls without
dripping (hot).
Lead the steam supply copper pipe into the cabin in the lower third of the cabin wall height
so that the steam can rise (steam rises upwards). Make sure the pressurized incoming steam
does not filter into the cabin at a point where people are likely to sit.
Properly insulate the copper steam pipe so that the high temperature does not touch the
wedi Building Panel foam (wedi resists up to 175F).
Make sure that fresh air supply and exchange is given, either by automated fans or through
an open space (1) between glass door and floor tile.
Use tile or stone that is appropriate for steam room conditions (dense, low absorbancy).
*Contact a wedi representative regarding chosing the proper epoxy resin product.

ADA Compliant Showers

ADA compliance is required in many installation scenarios, as it ensures ease of accessibility for
all people. wedi offers an array of compliant shower systems to meet these requirements and
needs. Many wedi shower systems may be installed floor level, fully flush with height and weight
considerations to ease burdened subfloors and reduce labor requirements involved in installation.
Additionally, wedi has developed a ramp that accommodates the barrier-free installation of the
Fundo base on top of a subfloor.
If no ramp or recessing of the base in the subfloor is possible, wedi offers another solution
involving the installation of wedi Building Panels. These panels, 1-1/2 or 2 thickness, may be
integrated around the Fundo or Riolito bases to create a tile-ready assembly. This option requires
ample subfloor height be available.

6. The side connections between corner

extension and straight extension panel also
offer a shiplap notch in which wedi joint
sealant is applied as described in step 2.

7. The straight extension is now properly

embedded in modified thinset mortar and
tightly sealed and connected to the Fundo
base and the corner extension panel.

8. Finally, a continuous bead of wedi joint sealant is applied over all surface connection joints
and spread over the joints using a putty knife. Weights are applied equally over the shower floor
to promote a firmer bond with the thinset mortar on the floor and to enable you to continue
working on the shower walls immediately.
5. The straight extension elements can be used
to further continue creating your tile ready,
sloped shower floor in both directions of the
corner. The installation procedure is identical
with steps 2-4.

wedi Objekt Expansion Joint Adhesive Profiles

wedi Objekt expansion-joint adhesive profiles, with a wear-resistant
surface finish, are ideally suited to installations using the thin-bed
method. They maintain their shape and are highly functional. Installed
flush with the tiled surface, these profiles offer the utmost protection
to tiling which is subject to stress, particularly in public and commercial

wedi Triolos Expansion Joint Profiles

wedi Triolos expansion joint profiles are the practical solution to the
problem of expansion joints indoors and outdoors. The special design of
the attachment limbs, created to be snapped at specific points, gives you
absolute flexibility during tiling. Fluting along either side of the profile
edges help to achieve improved adhesion between the expansion joint
profile and the tile adhesive. The wear-resistant surface has a dull matt
finish and is adapted to match the joint between tiles in terms of shape
and finish. Both side limbs can be snapped off, allowing it to be guided
along rounded joints. These profiles can be easily affixed to existing
