Racquet Sports Unit Lesson Overview

Abingdon High School - 9th Grade
Day 1: Start with our fitness activity called, Toe to Toe. After I will bring students around one
court to explain in depth, and demonstrate how the game of Pickleball is officially played with
sportsmanship and effort. I will answer any questions that are asked within the group. Once
questions are done, then students will proceed to practice the game of Pickleball, using
techniques and skills that were previously demonstrated through my instruction. I will make my
way around the perimeter of the gymnasium to help students effectively master their Pickleball
skills. Set up hula hoops in the corners of the courts and have them aim with partners to
practice their serving. For the last part of class, students will partner up and give me their team
name for the tournament so I can create a fair bracket.
Day 2: We will start the day by playing, Sharks and Minnows Tag. After we will divide into our
teams, and we will start our double elimination Pickleball Tournament.
Day 3: Students will start class by participating in the fitness activity called, Fit Pickleball,
which will help them craft their Pickleball skills. Then we will pick up where we left off and finish
our Pickleball Tournament. Teams who are eliminated will continue to play on other courts for
fun, until we conclude our Pickleball Tournament.
Day 4: As a class we will partake in our fitness activity, Follow the Leader. After I will bring
students around one court to explain in depth, and demonstrate how the game of Badminton is
officially played with sportsmanship and effort. I will answer any questions that are asked within
the group. Once questions are done, then students will proceed to practice the game of
Badminton, using techniques and skills that were previously demonstrated through my
instruction. I will make my way around the perimeter of the gymnasium to help students
effectively master their Badminton skills. Set up hula hoops in the corners of the courts and
have them aim with partners to practice their serving. For the last part of class, students will
partner up and give me their team name for the tournament so I can create a fair bracket.
Day 5: Begin the lesson with our Mirror, Mirror on the Wall fitness activity. After we will get with
our team and start our double elimination Badminton Tournament.
Day 6: Students will start class by participating in the fitness activity called, Fit Pickleball,
which will help them craft their Badminton skills. Then we will pick up where we left off and finish
our Badminton Tournament. Teams who are eliminated will continue to play on other courts for
fun, until we conclude our Badminton Tournament.
Day 7: This will be the last day that will conclude our Racquet Sports Unit. For the last day we
will have multiple Indoor Recreational Games set-up around the gym such as, Pickleball,
Badminton, Table Tennis, and 4-Square. By doing this, students are able to choose what they

like best, or play what they are good at to complete our unit. Depending on how students react
and cooperate to Indoor Recreation, I will make adjustments on how long we play. Assess
students on their individual improvement, and effort, along with the accuracy of their serves into
hula hoops. To practice table tennis serves, use a piece of construction paper or poster board,
and fold the paper or board in half after every serve completed.

Tournament Rules: Double elimination tournament with games being played to 11, and they
must win by two points. Teams with three players must substitute in every other service. When
they have finished a game they will find me to fill out their bracket. The winning team of the
loser bracket must beat the winners bracket champion twice to win the overall tournament.
Players must shake hands after each tournament game. If students fail to show sportsmanship,
it is an immediate disqualification from the tournament.
Pickleball Rules: Played on a badminton size court (20 x 44). Players on each side must let the
ball bounce once before volleys are allowed, and there is a seven-foot non-volley zone on each
side of the net, to prevent spiking. The server continues to serve, alternating service courts,
until he or she faults. The first side scoring eleven points and leading by at least two points
wins. Pickleball can be played with singles or doubles. Rock, Paper, Scissors to determine who
volleys for the serve.
Serving:
-

Serves are to be made diagonally, starting with the right-hand service-square and
alternating each serve. The serve must clear the seven-foot non-volley-zone in front of
the net and land in the diagonal service court.
Serves should always be done underhand with the paddle below the waist, and the
server must keep both feet behind the back line when serving. The ball should be hit
into the air without being bounced. The serving side will continue to serve until the
there is a fault on the service, at which point the service will be given to the opposing
side.

Double-Bounce Rule:
-

Each team must play their first shot off of the bounce. That is, the receiving team must
let the serve bounce and the serving team must let the return of the serve bounce
before playing it. Once these two bounces have occurred, the ball can either be volleyed
or played off the bounce.

Volleys:
-

To volley means to hit a ball in the air without first letting it bounce.

Can only be done when the players feet are behind the non-volley zone line (seven feet
behind the net).

A fault is committed when the ball:

-

Touches any part of the non-volley zone on the serve (including the line).
Is hit out of bounds
Does not clear the net
Is volleyed from the non-volley zone
Is volleyed before a bounce has occurred on each side

Badminton Rules: Played on a badminton court (20 x 44). The first side scoring eleven points
and leading by at least two points wins. Badminton can be played with singles or doubles.
Scoring System:
-

Every time there is a serve there is a point scored.

The side winning a rally adds a point to its score.
At 10 all, the side which gains a 2 point lead first, wins that game.
The side winning a game serves first in the next game.

Singles:
-

At the beginning of the game (0-0) and when the servers score is even, the server
serves from the right service court. When the servers score is odd, the server serves
from the left service court.
If the server wins a rally, the server scores a point and then serves again from the
alternate service court.
If the receiver wins a rally, the receiver scores a point and becomes the new server.
They serve from the appropriate service court left if their score is odd, and right if it is
even.

Doubles:
-

A side has only one service.

The service passes consecutively to the players as shown in the diagram.
At the beginning of the game and when the score is even, the server serves from the
right service court. When it is odd, the server serves from the left court.
If the serving side wins a rally, the serving side scores a point and the same server serves
again from the alternate service court.

If the receiving side wins a rally, the receiving side scores a point. The receiving side
becomes the new serving side.
The players do not change their respective service courts until they win a point when
their side is serving.

A fault is committed when the shuttlecock:

-

Is hit out of bounds

Does not clear the net

Is caught on the net and remains suspended on its top; after passing over the net, is
caught in the net
Touches the ceiling or side bleachers

If players commit an error in the service court, the error is corrected when the mistake is
discovered.
